On December 17th, 1929, the USS Lexington (CV 2), an aircraft carrier of the US Navy, began supplying the city of Tacoma, Washington with electricity straight from her generators. Tacoma was in crisis due to a drought that had affected the nearby hydroelectric sources. The city appealed to the federal government for help, and in response, the Navy sent the Lady Lex to Tacoma with heavy electric lines that were rigged into the city's power system.
Lexington would deliver 4,520,960 kilowatt hours to the Tacoma power grid over the course of the next month, until melting snow and rain brought the reservoirs up to the level needed to generate sufficient power to run the city. The request had been vigorously opposed by Seattle City Light, which claimed that the drought did not affect their operations. After the Lexington left Tacoma in January 1930, Seattle requested that the ship help out there. The Navy declined.

On March 19th, 1945, the USS Franklin was hit by 2 bombs from a Japanese dive bomber that has snuck back to the US fleet with a group of returning US strike planes. The bombs landed amongst planes on her deck that were fueled and armed for an upcoming strike on the Japanese home islands. This resulted in massive explosions and fires that almost sank the ship. The men of the USS Franklin somehow managed to get the fires under control and she steamed back to the Brooklyn Naval Yard under her own power, never to see the sea again. Over 800 sailors and airmen of the United States Navy perished that day.

On September 27, 1942, Douglas Albert Munro, a U.S. Coast Guardsman, displayed extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II. He led a group of landing craft to rescue a stranded U.S. Marine battalion under intense enemy fire.
Munro positioned his boat as a shield to protect the Marines, directing them to safety while braving enemy fire. Tragically, as the last Marines evacuated, Munro was fatally wounded, becoming the only Coast Guardsman to receive the Medal of Honor for his actions in World War II. His selfless courage and sacrifice epitomize the highest ideals of military service and heroism.
