I was delighted to be invited to be part of the Living a Nordic Life podcast, talking about some I love - telling stories, especially folktales, and spreading the word that everyone should be a storyteller. Stories from a particular origin or culture are rich and wonderful. They bring people together because of our common humanity. If ever there was a time when we need to remember our commonality, rather than how (supposedly) different we are from "those other people" -- it's now. Now is when we need folktales, more than ever. Have a listen to this episode on "Living a Nordic LIfe" with host Fiona McKinna!
What makes a folk tale?In this episode I talk to Eric Stavney of Nordic on Tap about the importance of folk tales in our lives and what Nordic folk tales mean to him.Eric is a passionate podcaster and storyteller and his podcast is inspiring and e...

How does Nordic society view wealth and greed, especially the expectations for those who come by their money ethically and honestly? We listen to two Norwegian and Danish folktales that discuss the responsibilities of wealthy people. That includes you and me, who have plenty of "personal wealth" like talents, skills, and abilities. How should we spend this wealth, according to folktales? Join me for two tales and analysis at https://nordicontap.com/wealth-greed-and-responsibility-in-nordic-folktales/

This looks like a great event. Jorunn has been doing Naalbinding for years and is a great teacher. I've always wanted to make shoes for myself.

The Laws of Jante were a set of 10 rules by which people in the fictional Danish town of Jante were supposed to adhere to, according to the novel by Aksel Sandemose. They laws were fairly severe, like "You are not to think you are more special than anyone else". Although fictional, many believe that these "rules" are alive and well today in the Nordic psyche. Join me and Fiona McKinna of the Living a Nordic Life podcast in delving into Nordic sociology. https://nordicontap.com/norwegian-society-and-the-laws-of-jante/

Got another donation to my podcast from a good friend who does the At the Jazz Band Ball podcast. Extra special. If you’re looking for a light musical education about the American jazz scene in the early 1900s, his show is a worth your time. From the show I’ve learned stories and music of musicians I’ve only heard of..Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong…the people who created jazz.
One place to hear it is:

Thank you Paula! Well, I’m in seventh heaven for sure. I just got my first donation for my Nordic on Tap podcast through “Buy Me a Coffee”! And a lovely note too!
Nordic on Tap has discovered the podcast "At the Jazz Band Ball" --- a delightful way to learn about and appreciate the jazz of the early to mid 1900s, when it was in its infancy and spawned so many talented musicians and subgenres (e.g. stride and ragtime, blues, and such). Kevin is a master host and extensive researcher - he has the chops and the artfulness to weave amazing stories about and between jaz numbers, which are all about being human and making it in the often challenging and racially segregated world of music in the USA. I've heard the names but never knew much about Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Mary Lou Williams... and the list only gets longer for me. On top of it all, Kevin is an old friend and a skilled radio host of many years (not to mention a trumpet virtuoso, and master of the Dewey Decimal System). I don't listen to many podcasts, but his is in my top three. It's worth a listen....and I dare you to not get hooked.

A treat to hear two excellent Danish folks musicians, Kristian Bugge and Sonnich Lydom! They stopped for a concert at the NW Danish Association in Seattle. Wow!
Looking forward to marching in Seattle's 17 May parade with my son Carl, the Bothell Sons of Norway troll. As his tender, I mostly try to keep back the screaming girls. Or those crazy tail-pullers.
A podcast I made about him/it is at
Every year before the pandemic, the Bothell Sons of Norway lodge members marched in Seattle’s 17th of May Parade, as well as Bothell’s Fourth of July Parade. In addition to a Viking ship float and a convertible sports car with the princess waving from the back, is a 7 foot tall, imposing, ugly...
Went to Madison's benefit day at Skål Beer Hall to raise money to partly cover the recent break-in at Leiren Designs. All the wedding dresses she's been making were stolen. A sad day for a bright light in our community, but the Beer Hall event was uplifting. 🙁
Recently interviewed the CEO of the National Aquarium in Bergen about their plans to build a big new facility with emphasis on science. We also tag along with Joachim Ekeli, one of the zookeepers, to hear how he talks to visitors about the displays. You can't hear this kind of programming anywhere else! https://nordicontap.com/the-national-aquarium-of-norway/

The lur is one of the great folk instruments of Scandinavia and was traditionally used by women at mountain farms, or sæters, in the summertime to gather the herds of cows, sheep, or goats. Less well known is the role of the lur in the story of Prillar Guri, who saved Norway from invaders at the Battle of Kringen in August of 1612. Join me as I interview the marvelous storyteller, musician, and player of the lur, Dr. Joan Haaland Paddock of Linfield University, who explains the features of the instrument, the natural scale that it plays, the origins of the Kalmar War, and the legend of the heroine, Prillar Guri.

For the Nordic on Tap podcast, I've been given permission to play Morten Alfred Høirup's delightful Ingela's Waltz, and I've thought the song relatively obscure. Not any more! The Six Feet Back Band at Seattle's National Nordic Museum Julefest event played a great rendition this last weekend. Here they are on 11-20-22 playing the first run-through of the piece (they go to repeat it, which I've cut). I'm excited that the waltz is being heard in the USA. Band members included Nick Ericson on torader accordion, Jared McFarland on fiddle, Lyn Jackson on guitar, Lydia Louie on flute, and Donna Luce on fiddle.

Reidun Horvei is coming to the Seattle Area, a gifted singer from Voss, Norway. I've heard her perform, and she's great. She's here for 3 appearances (one "class" at Edmonds CC) of Olav Hauges poetry. A Seattle performance is free with tickets. Worth a look!

This podcasts centers on the question of why Heyerdahl's ideas weren't widely accepted by the scientific community. We interview retired archeologist Dr. Matthew Spriggs to learn more. What constitutes scientific discourse? How should we evaluate the ideas of a person claiming to be a scientist?
The celebrated hero who sailed the Kon-Tiki across the Pacific, wrote several best-selling books, who inspired a whole generation of archeologists is one of Norway's most celebrated heroes. But Heyerdahl's ideas about Polynesian migration (among others) were not embraced by the scientific community....

It's the 75th anniversary of Heyerdahl's Kon Tiki expedition this year, and I'm working on a podcast about Thor Heyerdahl and his struggles in being taken seriously by the scientific community. Do his discoveries and ideas count as science?

What’s Nordic on Tap and what do we offer?
Nordic on Tap arose from the many requests to replay shows from the Scandinavian Hour (KKNW 1150AM 9AM Saturdays Pacific), especially one-of-a-kind features like contemporary interviews.
Since broadcast shows have copyright limitations posting programs to play on-demand, we wanted to offer something equivalent that has no such limitations - enabling you to listen anytime, anywhere there’s internet and a speaker. Our limitation is that we can only play live music recordings with the permission of all the artists involved, which also has its plus side too, especially when we can talk with the artist directly .
On Nordic on Tap, we’re looking for the story-behind-the-story, and the events and happenings that inspire artists of all kinds to perform, paint, sing, act, spin yarns, and make music. If the artist is a musician, we’d like to ask them to play a little something for our program. Or in the case of a band, we’ll go to them. We all can use some inspiration, and we hope to bring this to you.
We’re also interested in folks who just have an interesting story to tell. We favor stories and music from people hailing northwards from 50 degrees North latitude - Nordic types. Is that you? Write us at [email protected] so we can capture your stories for a podcast.
Above all, perhaps, is our desire to foster a community of friends, artists, and businesses around the world who appreciate Nordic culture. Not only foster that community, but help to keep it together. In the challenge of modern times, reaching out and helping each other seems to be an imperative. We’d aim to contribute to that.
So tell “Alexa” or “Siri” to play “Nordic on Tap” or head to wherever you get your podcasts! Please visit us at NordicOnTap.podbean.com for the latest episodes, and tell us what you think here on Facebook (please Follow us!), at [email protected], and soon NordicOnTap.com. Vi sees (We’ll be seeing you)!
