“I don’t think black people have ever not noticed birds, really. Birds are allegories for freedom. Birds do things black people can’t.”
Christian Cooper’s racist experience in Central Park wasn’t an anomaly, but black birdwatchers are—and that's not a coincidence.

"What we're seeing is just a politicians owning up to the fact they've been lying to us right? They were lying to us about the amount of money that we can spend, about what's important, about what hard limits really do exist on policy. And everyone should be screaming about it. Because we've just been lied to. We've been lied to about what's possible and what's not."
Boom. That's the New Republic's Kate Aronoff speaking on the Heated podcast special miniseries about the connections between climate crisis and COVID-19. All 6 episodes are out now! You couldn't ask for a better thing to listen to during Earth Week.

Give it a listen!
Fifty years on from the first, how have the politics of Earth Day changed?

As if you needed ANOTHER reason to listen to the amazing conversations in the Heated podcast: it's Earth Week! We launched this series because we were straight-up confused about how to think about climate change during the COVID-19 crisis -- so we asked some of the smartest people in climate and media and science and community organizing to help us make sense of it all. Check out this moving article from our friend Mary Heglar about the many ways climate change effects the future that our children will know. Mary recently spoke on the Heated podcast about life in the time of global pandemics -- find it in the Drilled feed wherever you get your podcasts.
There’s a very specific role I want to play in my young nephew's life, and it has everything to do with the world he's entered: one shaped by a climate in decline and pandemics on the rise.

ICYMI: the final episode of the Heated podcast miniseries is out and it features the one and only Ali Velshi. As you probably know from seeing him on television, Ali is expert at connecting the dots and giving order to information chaos. It's the perfect cap to the series. You can find it in the Drilled feed wherever you get your podcasts.
18/04/2020
"If I never get a fancy interview with the CEO of an oil company, that's fine. Because they've got lots of airtime. You can always hear from them." came on the podcast to talk about the complexities of covering COVID-19 and climate change at the same time. Give it a listen here:
MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi shares his thoughts on covering climate change, COVID-19, and both of them together.
17/04/2020
"The takeaway for a human consumer of media today is no one will save you. There is no one coming to save you. This is work for adults, you actually have to figure out what the right things are. We are in a world in which there's no time now for us to look for the leaders who are going to save us."
^^Ali Velshi once again slicing through the BS about how we deal with climate change in the time of coronavirus. Hear the full convo with this exceptional human in the Drilled feed now.

The conversations around climate change can be UNRELENTING. We need to keep our brains fresh AND be willing to tap the rage...
Enter Mary Heglar. We had Mary on the HEATED podcast not just because she’s a great person but because she’s also a badass giving a smart yet empathetic voice to climate rage. She’s a writer and a reader, so we asked her for the best ways to make ourselves smarter AND stay hot during the COVID lock-down. Mary’s kickass reading list includes pieces by Arundhati Roy and James Baldwin in addition to straight up climate journalism.
A 30-rack of Bud Light Lime costs more than a barrel of oil right now. Also, climate justice essayist Mary Heglar on the connections between COVID-19 and climate.
16/04/2020
Climate activist, essayist and Columbia University writer-in-residence Mary Heglar is the guest on today's episode of the Heated podcast. Mary speaks wisely about the difference between facts and truth, the fossil fuel industry's knack for bullying, and leaves us with some assurance that it's ok to not be ok. You don't want to miss this conversation. Find it in the Drilled feed wherever you get your podcasts.

In this week's episode of the Heated podcast, I'm talking with climate justice essayist and Columbia University writer-in-residence Mary Heglar. She doesn’t just convey the facts about climate change. She conveys the truth. What is it like to be a person who cares about climate, in a world where everyone else turns a blind eye? How do you live in that world? Mary conveys the answers better than anyone I know.

This testimonial is why we do what we do!!! Thank you to each of you that has supported so far.
The public need for information right now is at its peak. But the ad marketplace is not engineered to keep you informed. It’s engineered to sell you stuff. None of us are buying a lot of stuff these days, which means the ad marketplace is collapsing - and that’s cratering the organizations that bring you the news.
The HEATED podcast is different. We don't rely on ads -- only listeners. We are a 100 percent independent project, with no corporate or foundation backing.
There has never been a more important time to support news that matters to you. So please, if you’re enjoying the podcast, consider supporting the team through our GoFundme page. It’s the only way we get paid for this work.
100% of what you give goes to production costs and supporting the four person team who is producing the series. Anything you can give would be appreciated.
Your individual action, right now, to help cover the costs will make a difference. Please go to GoFundMe and search HEATED PODCAST.
And thanks!

Our friends at Living on Earth make a podcast that you should check out.
It’s your go-to source for the latest coverage of climate change, ecology, and human health. They’ve been at this for 30 years.
This week, the show features a conversation with award-winning activist and author Terry Tempest Williams on finding courage in the face of ecological grief. Also, hear more from public health expert Aaron Bernstein on air pollution and the global pandemic.
Listen on the radio or wherever you get your podcasts!

Besides being a great human being, Dr. Bernstein is on HEATED because he’s one of the true experts on how the climate crisis is harming our health -- particularly children’s health.
“The echo chamber on climate change is pretty darn big these days and most folks in the United States recognize that climate change is caused by people...and that we need to do something about it. The health arguments accelerate the reality that we need to do something pretty fast. What we need to do is take the vast majority of people in the country who are worried about this and give them reason to find hope.”
We hope you’ll listen and be inspired. Find it in the Drilled feed wherever you get your podcasts.

This is why we created the HEATED podcast! The COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis are THE SAME STORY. Catch up and binge our interviews with Bill McKibben, Kate Aronoff and Anthony Rogers-Wright. Episode 4 with pediatrician Dr. Aaron Bernstein is up NOW. Find it in the Drilled feed wherever you get your podcasts.

Straight talk from Anthony Rogers-Wright on the HEATED podcast.
“Houston, New York, Detroit, New Orleans… where we're seeing COVID-19 really starting to take off. These people are in, what W.E.B. Dubois would say, double jeopardy. Because they live in frontline communities. They are black, brown, and indigenous. And COVID-19. So I would add to the Dubois theory and say they're in triple jeopardy right now.”
Episode 3 of the HEATED podcast is out now. It’s tough stuff. If you’re an activist (particularly a white one), it demands humility and self-reflection. But if we're going to save lives, both from the coronavirus and climate change, self-reflection is non-negotiable. Hope you'll listen (find it in the Drilled feed wherever you get your podcasts) and consider supporting if you can at https://www.gofundme.com/f/heated-podcast-support.

Happy Monday! Folks, listen to this conversation with Kate Aronoff being super smart about how our political leaders are/aren't addressing the next global crisis (climate change) while they address COVID-19 here: https://t.co/BffAJNy2Gn
As thousands of Americans have been suffering and dying from COVID-19, the fossil fuel industry has sought to capitalize.

ICYMI: HEATED has a podcast! It’s a special miniseries about the connections between COVID-19 and the climate crisis. Episode 2 just dropped Friday and it is🔥🔥🔥! In the episode, I rant and rave (in a very productive way, I promise!) with the amazing Kate Aronoff of The New Republic about creative policy solutions that could actually make a difference. Find it in the Drilled feed wherever you get your podcasts, and maybe even consider supporting the pod team by finding Heated Podcast on GoFundMe.

Did you hear?? The HEATED podcast is out! It goes without saying that if you live on Earth, you should be concerned about climate change. It might be less obvious, though, why you should care about climate change now, as the coronavirus pandemic takes over the world.
That’s where the Heated podcast comes in. In the series, I’m exploring the relationship between the two crises--but also learning what it means to be a human who cares about other humans in today’s world. I’m talking with experts about how to connect the dots between politics, the economy, and climate action; how to connect with others when we can’t connect in person; and what we can do with our stay-at-home time that can actually make a difference for those less fortunate than ourselves.
The first episode dropped Wednesday and I’m really excited to share it. In it, I interviewed the legendary environmentalist Bill McKibben, who shed much-needed light on current events while also sharing personal insights on faith and humanity. I came out of our conversation more educated and energized on both the coronavirus and climate change. I hope it does the same for you.
You can hear it wherever you listen to podcasts, by searching for the “Drilled” podcast; they’re letting us drop into their feed for the next few weeks. And if you like it, you can support the HEATED podcast by searching “Heated podcast” on GoFundMe.

Our little newsletter packs a big punch. On Thursday, The World — which reaches more than 2.5 million listeners a week — aired a segment about Monday's essay on COVID-19 and climate change. Give it a read/listen here:
When it comes to the spread of COVID-19, personal choices matter. One infected person staying home instead of going out could save thousands of lives.
26/03/2020
The plastics industry is using the COVID-19 pandemic to achieve environmental policy goals that just weeks ago would have been impossible.
By claiming reusable bags spread coronavirus, they are successfully convincing state governors across the country to ban reusable grocery bags and halt bans on single-use plastic bags.
There's just one problem--these bans are not science-based. There is no evidence to suggest reusable bags carry the coronavirus more than single-use bags, or cash or credit cards, for that matter.
More here:
Conservative interests are teaming up to bring back the single-use plastic bag, using scientifically questionable claims that reusable bags spread coronavirus.

Every week, I come to you with a clear and unwavering message: that solving the climate crisis requires laser-focus on the powerful. That we all have a responsibility to reduce our personal carbon emissions, but that our responsibility pales in comparison to the bosses, the billionaires, the politicians and corporate executives. These are the people who got us into this mess, and they should be the ones getting us out.
I still believe that. But COVID-19 is teaching me that global crises don’t give a s**t about fairness.
This pandemic has shaken my worldview. But I have a plan for what to do next.

Exxon's Disneyworld exhibit touting fossil fuels to children opened in the same year that Exxon’s manager of environmental affairs, M.B. Glaser, sent a memo out to company executives about the greenhouse effect.
The memo read: “Our best estimate is that doubling of the current concentration could increase average global temperature by about 1.3 degrees celsius to 3.1 degrees celsius.”
The oil industry has a long history of creating pro-fossil fuel material for children, even when they knew their products caused climate change.

Accountability journalism for the climate crisis.
It is not your fault that the planet is burning. Your air conditioner, your hamburger, your gas-powered car—these aren’t the main reasons we only have about a decade to prevent irreversible climate catastrophe.
The majority of the blame for the climate emergency lies at the feet of those in power: Polluters, corporations, governments and individuals with true sway over how the economy operates. For years, the power brokers of the world have chosen to deny and delay this problem. And for years, we’ve lacked the kind of journalism necessary to call this out.
Not anymore.
HEATED is a Monday through Thursday newsletter that exists to expose and explain the forces behind past and present inaction on the most existential threat of our time. Through original reporting and analysis, it seeks to arm you with the knowledge you need to effectively fight this crisis.
It also has memes.
I’m Emily, and I write the newsletter. You can read more about who I am and why I do it HERE (Storybench) or HERE (Columbia Journalism Review).
