How to record a radio show?

There’s a ton of different ways but here’s how I do mine. Without mention of the hardware, yet, I record my microphone. Guest microphone(s). Music. Jingles. Sound effects.

These latter three come from a host of different sources: Turntable; CD player; Digital streaming source (Tidal) - iPhone or iPad (via DAC); Computer.

All recorded on separate tracks.

If it seems complicated that’s because it is, but I began with a much simpler set-up.

Follow the page for a beginner’s guide on how to start your own podcast/internet radio show.

So you’ve decided on your audio interface, now you’re going to need an xlr microphone. There are tons of them available, ranging from tens to thousands of pounds.

There are lots of YouTube videos from Podcastage, Julian Krause, Tom Buck, or Geeky Techy Nerdy et al out there to help you choose, but from a budget standpoint we here at DBP would recommend either the Røde Podmic or the Sontronic Podcast Pro (both Dynamic microphones) for simple podcasting, both of which we have in the studio.

Condenser microphones are somewhat different and we’ll discuss those at another time.

But you’re going to need some software, called a Digital Audio Workstation, or DAW, to record onto your computer.

Perhaps the best free one available is called Audacity:

In this video, I'll teach you how to record and edit a podcast in Audacity so that you can create a professional sounding podcast episode. Audacity works for...

Not available here yet, but this new interface from Presonus looks really interesting. You'll need an audio interface if you want to record using an XLR microphone, and we'll be looking at various ones and picking Dead Bob's favourite, but for now check this one out. Put it this way, if we didn't have a ton of gear already this one would be high up the list of possible purchases.

How many times, genuinely, have you tried to put a USB cable into a computer or other device without sight of the hole? If there is any justice in the world, you put it in one way, it doesn't fit. You turn it around, it should fit yes? Five times I have just been demeaned by an aluminium box. F**k you, Tim Apple!!

Back in the day, when Mike used to visit the studio for AmericanPrög Shows, we would shout into a Blue Snowball USB microphone positioned somewhere between us.

When we had finished we would occasionally record Not The AmericanPrög Shows.

This is one such show. Remastered to make it sound as best it could. It’s not the greatest sounding progressive rock podcast you’ll ever hear, but it sure as heck is better than it was.

This episode sees us playing some Epics, from such luminaries as It Bites, Yes, The Flower Kings and Marillion. So at least the MAMTABs is kept to a minimum.

If it's any consolation to you, struggling with sound quality on your podcasts, live streams or radio broadcasts, it's taken me years to fathom out the vagaries of EQ, compression, noise gates, expanders, limiters, and whatnot. I'm getting to a point, however, where I'm crafting a set of simple presets that will make your content sound better.

I've spent a few quid on other presets, and jolly good they have been, in allowing me to fine-tune settings. But as with anything, the more you know, the less you pay.

And just because you do YouTube don't think that your sound quality doesn't matter. It does. And it's probably more important than all your spangly colours.

Each NTAPS show gives me an opportunity to play around with microphones, interfaces, outboard gear and DAWs, and I'm nowhere there yet, but I'm honing in on a basic set of presets for one particular set up.

There's a long way to go, though, before I can offer products that I'm confident will be attractive to a wide range of content creators. But I hope you'll join me on the journey. There may well be funny memes but I'm making no guarantees.

After the DBP Award for Best USB microphone has been given to the Rode USB Mini (with free Rode Connect software), we'll be focusing on audio interfaces, so stay tuned for more information on how to make your voice and content sound great.

OK, so you might be thinking about doing a podcast or a live stream, and xlr microphones, audio interfaces, mixers and whatnot may well be in your future, but the DBP recommendation for best ‘out of the box solution’ goes to the Rode NT USB Mini, using the free Rode Connect software.

In this episode, we have a look at and listen to the new RODE Connect app. This free app allows you to record and stream with up to 4 RODE NT-USB Mini microp...

The alternative to a USB microphone that you plug straight into your computer is what is termed an XLR microphone, that you plug into an audio interface (or mixer). The audio interface then plugs into the computer. You’ll need some software (called a Digital Audio Workstation, or DAW) but for now let’s have a preliminary look at interfaces.

Here's Bobcast 20 from 2016 to show what we can do with your old, tired, dare we say s**t, recordings. And to give you a glimpse of what your radio shows / podcasts / voiceovers can sound like.

Your vocal sound will only be as good as your room, your microphone, or your audio interface/computer, and we can't make you intelligent or erudite, but we promise to make your rubbish old recordings sound better than they were.

If you want to hear the original NTAPS 20, which was dreadful, just a USB microphone into a MAC recorded into DJ Pro software, in a big booming room, just DM Brian.

Thinking of starting a podcast, or doing voiceover work, then we can record and produce your content. Audio is, we think, the most important aspect of your video content if you are a Youtuber and we can help you maximise your vocal quality

We work on a per show rate, or, if you're feeling frisky, why not upgrade to a monthly plan, which will give you 4 weeks of full 1 hour audio production for the cost of 3.

An old, and we mean really old, Bobcast, from 2016. Remastered by Dead Bob Productions Sound Design. Not the best quality, but you should have heard the original. http://podcasts.progzilla.com/not/NTAPS_20_Remastered.mp3Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: RSS
