Yes-- Oh please excuse me for a second, a patron has just arrived.
Hello dear patron, it is wonderful to see you again. Unfortunately, we are facing a bit of an unprecedented issue in the opening of our newest exhibit today. About Us
The story starts-- like supposedly all LGBTQIA+ stories-- with the process of coming out. In 2017, Mik (they/them) and Orion (he/him and they/them) worked together on the University of Houston's annual Coming Out Monologues, a show where the audience experienced a myriad of LGBTQIA+ coming out stories performed on stage. After working together as officers of GLOBAL, the organization that put that show on, they decided to co-direct the 2018 Coming Out Monologues, where they clicked into place as a creative duo after the success of the show. However, that's not where our story ends.
We are both passionate artists, and finding out we had similar interests in media, we had the same complaint; where were the stories starring us? Where were the fantasies about genderqueer princexes, the le***an pirate captains, the dystopian YA stories about a gay neurodivergent poor genderquestioning young person who’s finding out the world has no stories about le***an pirate captains?
We realized that we were both passionate about moving past the cookie cutter "coming out" narrative, a narrative that has been pushed on us as one of the only ways to take in LGBTQIA+ stories. A narrative that as of late, has been primarily marketed to straight audiences. We wanted to create media for the LGBTQIA+ community that takes into account that there is more than one way to tell a story. That we have more than one story to tell.
Life forgot to give us lemons, so we decided to grow them ourselves and watch them blossom.
The most recent project we are working on is called Transmission Folklore, a podcast about the misadventures of Carter and Sorrel, two folks who are on a road trip for their lives- literally. After someone attempts to drown Sorrel in the bayou, Carter sees no choice but to help them out. However, he's captivated by things he can't explain; namely, why that person in the water had a tail. Caught between the world of college and the world of magic, the two must find their way in Carter's 2006 PT Cruiser. Tune in as they make sense of real world problems; friendships, relationships and car troubles.
Keep an eye on our social media for updates and more about Transmission Folklore and our other upcoming projects!
