We’d heard Dubai was one of those places you either love or hate. It’s known for the glitz and the glamour, luxurious and biggest everything, with lambos on every street corner. And, well, if there’s one thing you know about us, it’s that we are the precise opposite of fancy 😂 But, we had to know if our $100 per day budget would make it here.

We spent 3 days in Dubai during the holy month of Ramadan and for us, it was the unexpected that made the trip endlessly fascinating... like all the traditions and culture that remain intact even in the hypermodern city; the people here - the kind, hardworking migrant workers from all over the world that run every aspect of this megalopolis. And oh yeah, turns out, Dubai can actually be done on a budget.

Traveling the Philippines is one big adventure from start to finish. From the moment we landed we knew we were in for something special. We were on a tricycle or a boat almost every single day, there’s incredible food, bus rides with 2-high stacks of chickens in cardboard boxes, flights on airlines we’d never even heard of, night markets, these jeepney things to get from city to city, boats through underground rivers, 7000+ islands, beaches so beautiful that they look fake, and the most friendly people we’ve ever met. There’s no real set tourist path, and we had no real plans, except our usual $100 per day budget.

The first of our “3 More Days In…” kicked off in one of our most favorite cities—Tokyo. Spaceship boats, Fuji-san views, samurai festivals, J-pop concerts, plum blossoms, a vending machine bar, a day trip to Yokohama, and Tokyo Tower certificates of stairway ascent, (which make Josh feel accomplished and like he really did something) are just a few of the things we got up to.

We went to Vietnam with the intention of making a “3 Days In” Hanoi and Saigon, the two biggest cities. But as soon as we landed, we knew we had to change all our plans and do a big ole trip across the country—it was one of the best trips we’ve ever taken.

Vietnam feels like one of those places that changes you and changes the way you travel. The adventure, the food, the tiny plastic stools, the history, the food again, the beautiful scenery, and the people. The people are so incredibly special, strong, fun and funny, resourceful, and just badass. This caption and these photos just don’t do the country justice. And if you’ve got the time, we just finished an *almost* 2 hour long video on our 13 day journey posted on YouTube.

Bangkok was one of the first places we traveled to together. Some people either love or hate it, but the city’s colorful, hectic, vibrant, and gritty energy and neighborhoods full of friendly people and secret bars makes it one of our favorite places to go back to. We spent our 3 days exploring the canals, visiting all the markets and wats (Buddhist temples), zipping around in their new electric tuktuks! and eating all the good food. (Last photo from our first trip almost 5 years ago!)

$100/day goes a long way in Bangkok, but our favorite ways to stay on budget were:
-Taking the boats to get around the Chao Phraya River. There are all kinds of tourist hop on and hop off boats, but the orange flag commuter boat was our favorite—it’s always an adventure and costs 15 baht ($0.44 USD) one way.
-Street food is our favorite kind of food and there is no shortage of it in Bangkok, all of it so affordable and tasty. Papaya salad, meat on sticks, yes please.
-even though many bars, malls and more modern restaurants accepted credit card, we found cash to be the main form of payment there. We usually withdraw cash from the ATM upon arrival to avoid high exchange rates (and with our Schwab debit card, we don’t have any withdrawal or ATM fees.)

You know the drill—3 days in Singapore :) Despite being one of the most expensive places in Asia, we managed to stay under budget and loved exploring and eating our way through all the iconic spots, off the beaten path gems, and ofc the hawker centres.

Our fave budget friendly tips:
-Public transportation is the best way to get around. Grab an easy link card to take all the trains and buses everywhere
-Second best (though maybe our favorite green) way to get around—bikes! The bike paths are awesome even go all the way to the airport (they even have showers along the way!)
-Hawker centres are hands down our favorite places to eat, with so much of the best, affordable food. (Plus, you have over 100 hawker centres to choose from)

3 weeks did not feel like nearly enough time to see and experience this beautiful country, but that seems to be a trend in our series (and life 🙃) It’s hard to fully encapsulate the journey, but we tried to in our longest video yet (it’s just shy of 2 hours 🫨)

Aotearoa New Zealand, you have our hearts. ❤️ 🇳🇿

Our biggest budget tips:
-Visiting in the off or shoulder season meant that even though it was a bit chilly, we were able to rent our van at half the cost of the high season. Plus all the campsites and popular tourist destinations were always plentiful and less busy.
-the Rankers app was our go to for finding awesome affordable/free campsites everywhere we went -Having a self contained campervan opened the door to so many awesome sites we could stay at, many for free
-Signing up for all the grocery rewards helped us save money on groceries and gas. (Also, josh wants me to tell you we had $5 Pak n Save steaks almost every other night, although our video might suggest we sustained solely on Pic’s PB&J sandwiches)

Someone asked us recently about our thoughts on going back to places we’ve been before. We are definitely in the firm camp of “do it!!” Especially if we are lucky enough to. We loved our 3 days in Sydney and found more and more of the city to fall in love with! Our 3 days highlights included—pies, lots of pies; witnessing the women’s Sydney Swans win their first AFL game; commuter ferries for the win; exploring the outskirts of Sydney; and the most chill kangaroo to ever exist.

Things we loves about the city that helped us stick to our $100/day budget:

-Public transport was awesome and super varied! Ferries, trams, buses were all affordable and you can tap on and off with a cc.
-Grocery store finds were a good way to save money for breakfast, but we loved all the affordable street eats too—banh mi, dumplings, pies, and emperor puffs.
-The walks around Sydney are awesome—we did the 10km Spit Bridge to Manly walk and it was our favorite day.

We went to Fukuoka last year just to watch the Grand Sumo tournament not realizing what a cool city it was. So we went back for another 3 days and were endlessly surprised and loved its laid back, canal city cool vibes.

Our Fukuoka tips:
-try to time your trip for a sumo tournament, which usually happens every November
-we loved staying in the Tenjin area, but the Hakata and Canal City areas are also close by and great places to explore
-check out the Hawks play at PayPay Dome! Watching a baseball game in Japan felt surreal and so different than watching a game at home
-the food in Fukuoka is so good! We loved all the ramen options (everything from 290 yen vending machine ramen to Ichiran HQ), the tiny yatai stalls, and motsunabe (thanks to the friends we made at last years sumo tournament for introducing us to it!)

We love going back to places we’ve been before to experience new, fun adventures and also to find that some things stay just the same. Our 3 days in Busan was just that—we got to visit all of our favorite KBBQ places, Josh ate all the hotteok, and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to grill meat with a thousand other people at the Bulgogi Festival and practice self-care/sweat out said meat at Spa Land the next day.

Some Busan tips:
-you can use your cute South Korea TMoney rechargeable cards on the metro and buses—easiest way to get around!
-we found the Bulgogi Festival by just looking up events in Busan that weekend. We understood none of the flyer, but Google Translate managed to tell us there was grilled meat, a concert and it was an hour away. So we took a chance! Find whatever your local “bulgogi festival” is and check it out!
-we loved staying in the Nampodong area—close to all the food and water, but a metro ride away to the nightlife and major tourist spots. And our hotel was $45/night!

We spent our one day layover in Seoul, one of our favorites cities of all time. We went just a little bit over budget, splurging a bit on some sweet seats for a football match, but we had a blast. 24 hours never feels enough, but we got to see a lot, climb a lot, eat a lot, and root for FC Seoul! (Btw, find someone who looks at you the way Josh looks at hotteok 😍)

Our top tips for a layover in Seoul!
-The metro in Seoul is awesome (not surprisingly.) get an adorable Tmoney card at any convenience store or metro station to get around and pay for things
-There are lots of lockers scattered throughout the city, especially at the train and metro stations. Use them as an affordable way to store your luggage while bopping about the city.
-There are tons of budget ways to experience Seoul. Our favorite way to see Seoul is following the old city wall trail—it takes you through different neighborhoods, markets, and you never even really have to use a map (although we still do 😊)

When I first heard Macau was called the Vegas of Asia, I wasn’t super interested in going. But then we learned we could easily get there from Hong Kong by the longest underwater bridge and were sold 😂Then, we got there and learned about its Portuguese, Chinese and Macanese (and Las Vegas) influences and were super fascinated by it all. Cobblestone streets with Portuguese and Chinese signs, a cathedral to St Paul, pastel de natas galore, and gigantic Vegas like casinos 🤯it was a trip.

Our tips in Macau!
-You can get to Macau from HK pretty affordably with the metro, a bus and another bus. (Or you can take a ferry.) once you get to Macau, the hotel shuttles are the best free ways to get around to some of the big spots (you don’t even have to be staying at the hotels! Or gamble! Although I’m sure they wish you were 😉)
-The currency in Macau is the Macanese pataca (MOP), but you can also use your Hong Kong dollars there.
-We found the most affordable food to be in the cooked food centres (surprise!) but the egg tarts were also cheap eats and plenty filling 😊

Hong Kong is one of those places that can seem rough and tough on the exterior, but the more we just went with it, the more we realized how unique and hospitable it truly is. (Also, the food is too good.)

Our top tips in Hong Kong!
-Take the ding ding (or tram) to get around Hong Kong island. It’s mega affordable at $3 HKD or $0.40 USD no matter the stop and it’s such a fun way to see Hong Kong!
-You can take the iconic star ferry to Kowloon side for only $0.64 USD in under 15 minutes. You can also take a number of ferries to the other surrounding islands. Using the Octopus transit card (on your phone or physical card) is super convenient and can even be cheaper than using cash.
-Look for the cooked food centres for the really good, local and affordable places to eat. It can feel intimidating because they’re usually hidden above a wet market of sorts, but every single one we’ve been to was full up of tasty food and super welcoming people.

Josh wrestled a sumo wrestler (it did not end well 😂), we ate tons of good food, got omurice dinner and a show, biked to beautiful temples and palaces, did sake tasting for $3, and fed hungry hungry deer. Kyoto and Osaka (+ Nara!) are endlessly cool and 5 days did not feel like nearly enough time.

Getting to go back to a place that you’ve been before is a special thing. Getting to go back to a place that you think you know well and have it teach you a thing or two is even more special. This trip back to Taipei felt particularly meaningful. ❤️🇹🇼(Also, still dreaming about the food.)

3 days in Mexico City was definitely not enough, but man, did we have fun trying to eat all the food, see all the sights, walk all the neighborhoods, and watch all the lucha libre. Can’t wait to visit CDMX again soon. 🇲🇽

260 km (161 mi) of walking, 15 days on the trail (+/- a few because of food poisoning,) so many €12 menu del días, countless €2 cervezas, vinos and cafe con leches, a couple of blisters, one palo/walking stick and an endless number of incredibly kind humans along the way. There are no words to fully encapsulate the moment, but here are some photos that try to do it justice.

We’re already talking about which Camino we will embark on next.

The beauty of the Camino :) One of the many lessons we learned from our first Camino is to do it your way. We spent a couple of days on the Central route to only go back to the Coastal route. And we fell in love with Viana do Castelo immediately. The coast just has our heart ❤️

It’s been a while since we’ve posted actual photos. As much as we love (and rely on!) videos, photos will always have my heart.

The last several months have been a bit of a blur. We’ve been trying our best to find that sweet balance of this traveling thing in between spending more time at home. It’s been a whirlwind bouncing around from place to place, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Plus, how lucky that we get to call so many places home! As much as we love full time traveling, we love more that we have the time and flexibility to say “yes” to more things, including our latest quest.

Since doing the Camino Frances almost 2 years ago, we haven’t stopped talking about it. So, here we are, starting our second Camino, this time from Porto to Santiago on the Portugués Route. 280 km or 173ish miles are in our future. 🙃

When we set out on our quest to Longyearbyen, the northernmost city in the world, we had no idea what we’d find. We ended up with midnight sun, the most adorable dogs that happen to protect us from polar bears, stunning views from what felt like a completely different planet, living in a tent that made it to Antarctica and back, and for Josh, a dream come true. Both the journey and destination were pretty awesome.

Only because Seoul’s hotels were all full one day, we got to stay in a traditional Korean hanok, try Makgeolli rice wine from a kettle, and enjoy the view from above the Jeonju Hanok Village. Jeonju turned out to be one of our favorite spots in Korea, (despite what Josh’s face says in the second to last photo 😂)

In 2019 (pre-YouTube Lisa & Josh,) Josh printed out a large map of the nearby area we were vacationing in and gave us each turns at throwing the sharpie at the map. And that’s how we ended up in Death Valley and Las Vegas for NYE.

To recapture some of that spontaneity, we threw a “dart” at a Korean map and ended up in the 2012 world expo city of Yeosu. For as lovely as the coastal city was, the anticipation of where we’d end up, learning there was a famous song about Yeosu, running to catch the train there and the actual journey were our most favorite parts.

This 12 hour overnight ferry from Busan to Jeju teaching us all about slow travel. It’s 11 hours longer and $30 more than the flight, but so much more magical ✨ (Plus had a convenient store, vending machines, coin karaoke, and rooms with a view.)

One year ago today, we started what intended to be our one year around the world honeymoon. We had no idea how the year would unfold.

A friend recently asked us what the overall feeling was, after looking back on the year. I told her this year has made me realize how overwhelmingly good and kind the world is.

In a time where there is much in the world that is heartbreaking and difficult, I think of…
-the kind friends on the Camino we met, who helped us book our accommodations, when we couldn’t find any.
-those who invited us into their celebrations in Florence, when Italy won the World Cup.
-all the kind hosts who welcomed us into their homes, sharing food, wine, and even one who gave us a cake on Valentines Day. ❤️
-all the sweet doggos and kitties we encountered that brought us joy and reminded us of our Octavius. 🐈‍
-the street food vendors in Chiang Mai who took the time to teach Josh how to tie a plastic sauce bag 😂
-the kind man at a restaurant in Gwangju who didn’t give up on us when we couldn’t figure out how to order Korean bbq (and even sent us home with Korean salt when we asked him where we could purchase some).🧂
-our friends at the Giving Tree who spent countless hours teaching us how to get our necks and backs in order (and even gave us massage stones and ointment when we left Thailand.) 💆🏻‍♀️
-the offers for shelter, a shower, hot coffee, and even a sailing adventure when we tried van life part 2 in Australia 🚐
-all of our friends and family who still are so supportive even if our life paths diverge a bit

And then, of course, I think of all of you, (some of whom we’ve gotten to meet and even travel with!)

We feel so incredibly lucky that our last year has been a wonderful adventure and we can’t wait for more to come.
