By using nature as a source of medicine and isolation, the Yanomami make the most of their environment without exploiting it. As outsiders, we must do our part to prevent land exploitation and unwanted intervention to allow for the indigenous to prosper.

“They are a very unique migratory songbird,” Nicole Netherton, the executive director of a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting local wildlife, said, “mostly because they only nest in 29 counties here in Central Texas.”

“When all of us students spend so much time in front of our computers every day, it’s crucial we get out into the sun and into nature; it reconnects us to the real world and takes our minds off those Monday morning Zoom calls.”

One of the most important aspects of sustainable living is purchasing sustainable food. Here at Boggy Creek Farms, they’re doing just that. Hardly any farther than the big brand grocery stores, once you make the move to this quaint but amazing market, there’s little chance you’ll turn back. Be sure to read all about it in the newest story from Drift Magazine ATX. https://www.driftmagazineatx.com/content/sustainable-living-out-the-door-and-down-the-street

“Many of history’s greatest movements were started by people who came together. Rather than sitting back to watch the world crumble, we can make an effort to piece the world back together.”

As the supposed “Autumn weather” (which is 90° in Texas) sets in, we are overwhelmed with the fears and questions about how much longer our planet can be sustained.

08/11/2020

It seems like every year we see the headline, “California Wildfires Devastate the West Coast.” At this point, some of us may see this as a seasonal change, similar to leaves changing color in the fall or flowers blooming in the spring. While wildfires occur naturally, these "super fires" are anything but. Humans are the reason behind all this destruction. Increased severity and frequency of wildfires are just some of the few results of climate change. And if we don’t take action soon, California won’t be the only place in the headlines.

As this colder weather kicks in and camping gear comes out, here are some things you can do to prioritize a safe fire and also be mindful of wildfires happening outside of Texas.
1. Make sure you are at a site that allows campfires.
2. Make sure there are no burn bans and it's not too windy.
3. Dig a pit away from overhanging branches.
4. Circle the pit with rocks.
5. After lighting, throw the match into the fire.
6. Never leave a campfire unattended; an adult should supervise the campfire at all times.
7. Never put anything but wood into the fire.
8. When it's time to put the fire out, dump lots of water on it, stir it with a shovel, then dump more water on it. Make sure it is COLD before leaving the campsite. If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave! 🔥Stay safe!

Need a break from the election coverage? Keep reading!

“(With the) way things have been handled this year, camping at our state parks has been an absolute godsend,” Sarah Muñoz said. “It's so nice to get away from our home where all my kids have been cooped up, get fresh air, and feel safe.”

With the world beginning to open up again, state parks look to find a happy medium between letting guests roam free and trying to protect employees and other guests from Covid-19. "We have a little more than seven years — roughly one and a half presidential terms — left before the consequences of the 1.5 degrees of warming become a reality." – That is a statement that definitely hits home for Drift Magazine.
As Election Day approaches, we're taking time to educate ourselves and others about important issues like climate change because “the facts and science are clear. Climate change is real, and we are causing it."

28/10/2020

For over 50 years, Sir David Attenborough has been a champion for wildlife conservation. A wildlife biologist by trade, Attenborough has spent his life traversing the globe, studying and documenting different species that call our planet home. Often called “the voice of nature,” you may know Attenborough for his narration of "Planet Earth." Here are some of some of our favorite films voiced by the man himself.
Attenborough’s newest work, “David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet” is unlike any film he’s been in before. While it does focus on wildlife, it also provides insight into the amazing life David has lived, as well as his advice on saving the planet. At 93, Attenborough’s last call to action is about what we need to do as a society before we lose our home for good.
Second is a film series called “Our Planet.” This series showcases the different biomes on our planet and the animals that live there. A truly inspiring show, it humbles anyone who takes the time to watch it. These are both available for streaming on Netflix.
The third is a BBC docuseries that was widely acclaimed for its revolutionary and beautiful underwater camera work. Unlike any film before, “Blue Planet 2” takes the viewer on an underwater adventure that gives a glimpse into what life is like beneath the waves. Episodes are available with any cable BBC subscription and can be purchased on Amazon or by episode on YouTube.
