Hi all,
I have been missing a while since I been have graduated from my university and shift my focus on my job and learning python.
Now I am a fulltime digital nomad working wherever I want to be, I think it’s time for me to practice Grasshopper from time to time. So I will try to solve a question weekly based on people asked in a group and build the definition myself.
Just a way to keep me from rusting my skills in digital designing.

Here this the practice from the question been asked form Grasshopper tutorials by Mikkel Poulsen:
He wants to make a definition where these "tree" structures connect to a square frame.

Divide Surface

In this practice we can take a look at how to work with data tree and create a pattern on a surface using UV count.

By using Path Mapper, we can build the tree structure list in the way we want it to be, in this case {A;B} (i) to{A} .
Then using list item , calling out in the order of desired pattern(in this case = 1,2,7,11,14,13,8,4) to create polyline wire on the surface. Do remember to invert the closed.

You may use Coccon and Weaverbird to build mesh out of it.

In the pass few months, we have launched our page on Facebook and Instagram. We are surprised by the number of people who follow us and have been able connect people from all over the world.

Today, we decided to launch our own website and determine to work on more projects to share the knowledge with more people. We do believe the future of Architecture industry need more people who have skill in parametric design and ability to code.

So follow us here! let's learn and share!

How to learn grasshopper?

This is the question I get asked often. I think with my experience in learning Grasshopper, the most important part is to get to know how data structure gets build and matched. Getting familiar with “List” and “Tree” is critical if you want to advance your skill in Grasshopper.
Here is a book that I want to share - the first edition of the "Essential Algorithms and Data Structures for Computational Design" by Rajaa Issa.

This new publication by McNeel introduces effective methodologies to develop complex 3D modelling algorithms using Grasshopper. It also covers extensively the data structure adopted by Grasshopper and its core organization and management tools. The material is directed towards designers who are interested in parametric design and have little or no background in programming.

In this practice, we can take a look at how “Cohesion” affects the behavior of the flocking.

It’s important to only change one parameter at a time, so you may see how each parameter works on the results.

Sphere Collide

In this practice, we can take a look at how to control the deformation in Kangaroo Engine.
How sphere collide work is by maintaining the distance of each point which results into the mesh deformation.

You then may use Weaverbird to smooth the mesh into a rather smooth appearance.

Field Slope with Random Points

In this practice, we can take at look at how field works to create steam lines and the relationship of charge bounding.

With the script of random, you may achieve multiple results with one script.

Do pay attention of how the data being reconstructed with Path Mapper.

Curve Voxel

A voxel represents a value on a regular grid in three-dimensional space. As with pixels in a 2D bitmap, voxels themselves do not typically have their position (coordinates) explicitly encoded with their values.

Truchet Tower

Truchet studied the proportions of typefaces using the French line (1⁄12 French inch), a measurement derived from silversmithing. The commission then invented the first typographic point, using minute fractions of the line to create a bitmap that could be used to mathematically describe and italicize metal type.

The thesis design to me is nothing more than finding an answer to what designer does and how things being design.

In my learning process, I’ve seen people presenting their design by starting a design concept, and somehow through a process, it turns into a building or an object. Yet, the true process from design concept to final design has failed to be articulated within the presentation, which has been skillfully covered up to be fancy drawings and so-called diagrams. The judges seem to grade things on the result instead of asking how these designs being translated into final products, in our cases, architecture.

For a long time, we have been fooled by people who claim they can teach us how to design things, yet they fail to illustrate the thinking process and intentionally using big words to exaggerate what they truly capable of.

If one really takes time scrutinizing through their design process, there will be a lot of black boxes, the unspeakable methods, within it. Then, as a student, who sees architecture as engineering and art Pantheon, gets really lost in this game called architecture design education.
