So...

Last year I entered FilmSupply's EditFest competition...or at least I tried to. Having not read the brief correctly I was disqualified (rightfully so) for a number of technical oversights.

Some of you might remember the wonderfully deranged trailer I made for a film that doesn't actually exist.

Monoliths, ancient cults, the bending of space and time etc...

Well this year, rather than start from scratch I reconfigured last years entry (to fit within the guidelines) and now it's up for judgement from the panel at FilmSupply AND it's up for the peoples choice award. All this to say...

If you've got a minute or two spare, I'd greatly appreciate if you could cast a vote for the 'Apophis' trailer.

Whilst you're there check out the trailer, spend a minute lamenting that it isn't actually a full length feature and then have yourself a wonderful weekend.

From the Archives: 4 Years ago my mum was a guest on DIMED OUT. We talked parental memories, childhood toys, alien encounters, and courtesy of Karina Silverman's 'Big Talk' cards - I asked her some existential questions.

Good Times.

You can hear the episode in full here.

To celebrate breaking into double digits, I invited the true creator of 'Dimed Out' onto the podcast, my mum. We're talking parental memories, childhood toys, alien encounters and courtesy of Kalina Silverman's 'Big Talk' project, I have her answer some pretty deep, human questions.

With it being stupid hot season, I figured now was a good time to re-share last years Soundsystem Fiesta Mix

A caliente mix of afro house, latin house, bassline, drum and bass, garage, and jungle music.

Perfect for the gym, 10k training, the cook out, dossing about by the pool or dancing by yourself at home.

The sun has hot his hat on for the Soundsystem Fiesta 2023. A sizzling mix of afro house, latin house, bassline, drum and bass, garage, and jungle.

Whilst at Puebla, during some of my downtime (Chemo and Neutropinia) I started tinkering around with some music ideas again.

Sampling, layering, chopping up loops, playing with space and texture etc and I ended up creating a 5 track EP that has become a pretty fitting representation of my time there.

An odd mix of low-res jungle, downtempo, ambient, IDM and experimental music that samples everything from Alan Watts and Japansese Commercials for Playstation 1, to field recordings of rain on the rooftop garden at Clinica Ruiz (Track 4 - '7200')

Like most stuff I've tinkered about with in the past, it's not certainly not gonna be everyone's cup of coffee, but nonetheless, after putting it together I thought I'd share for those curious.

Something that some of you know, but most don’t, is that last year I had a surprising stay in the hospital.

I was there for just under a week and I left with a diagnosis of M.S. (Multiple Sclerosis)

And in 4 weeks (to the day) I’ll be embarking on a journey that I wholeheartedly believe will give me a better quality of life.

In 4 weeks I’m heading to Puebla, Mexico to undergo HSCT (Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation).

It’s a fairly intense 4 week procedure that includes harvesting healthy cells, chemotherapy, a hard reset of my immune system, and then the reinsertion of healthy cells. And then, obviously, a prolonged period of recovery.

I’m talking about this now…for a few reasons really.

Firstly, this is a huge thing for me. Like…massive. It’s going to be difficult and unpleasant and although, in recent times, I’ve become quiet and insular online I realise there can be power and support and comfort in sharing.

Throughout the procedure and the recovery period I’ll be sharing updates. In these updates my appearance (and no doubt my demeanour) will change but I think it will be helpful (for me and hopefully others) to let people in to this season of my life.

Secondly, for those who know/see me in the physical, but don’t know about my situation…this is it. And this is why you’ll see less of me for a considerable amount of time come the end of May.

I understand for a lot of you this is a bolt of the blue, but I didn’t really want to get into it until I was closer to my departure.

I’ve essentially tried to carry on as normal but now I’m on the fringe of a new normal I figured it’s time to open the door.

If you want to know more, feel free to reach out and get in touch and we discuss it but yeah..that’s pretty much it.

I’ve no idea how to end this 😂 it was hard enough to articulate everything above, so I’ll just say I hope you have a great week and I’ll keep you posted. ❤️

ALBUMS OF 2024

No.6 - Three by Four Tet

‘Three’ is an album that sees Kieran Hebden play to the many strengths he’s developed over 25 years of making thoughtful, soulful, electronic music under the moniker Four Tet.

Its use of space, layering, tone, and pace is fantastic. As is the textural element.
The album is often rooted with crisp, crunchy beats or percussion that adds a sense of heft without ever becoming sluggish.

In concurrence with, and independent of this, are pockets of glacial ambience, and ethereal sounding patterns formed from synths, keys, picked strings or guitar (as is the case with the lush ‘Skater’)

Whether working together as partners of contrast (best exemplified on ‘Daydream Repeater’) or separate ideologies, it all fits wonderfully into the kaleidoscopic collage of ‘Three’.

This isn’t new for Four Tet, by any means, but he’s really found himself in a creative pocket here and is firing on all cylinders.

From stripped down, low key bangers to moments of zen, the tonal shifts are fluid and the individual parts of this record click into place to make an always engaging, often gorgeous sounding body of work.

Plus there’s a duality of sorts to ‘Three’ you can easily sink into the album and lose yourself or you can listen with headphones and pick out the numerous examples of attention to detail.

Fantastic stuff. An early AOTY contender for sure.

ALBUMS OF 2024

No.5 - Tangk by Idles

Love is the fing isn’t just a fheme here, it’s also the nucleus to the Idles fifth full length release.

Love for the self and fellow human radiates through the familiar angles and new ideas on display and although it doesn’t reach the heights of their breakout LP, ‘Tangk’ is the bands most consistent and solid effort since ‘Joy as an Act of Resistance.’

Frontman Joe Talbot continues to stretch and develop his vocal ability and the record as a whole is further proof that the band are not content with being confined to the labels of punk or post-punk.

Digital textures and tinkering, the piano powered opener ‘IDEA 01’, and the sputtering drum machines of ‘POP POP POP’, are all great examples of their experimentation landing and moulding a more coherent product along with layers to their sonic identity.

Plus there’s some top tunes, there’s also a couple of rough edges and misses, but top tunes live on this fing nonetheless.

A good outing and definite step in the right direction.

7/7.5

IF YOU’VE GIVEN ‘TANGK’ A SPIN, DID YOU LIKE IT?
