“I think it’s a really important question for the church to think about how we do deal with the William Blakes in our congregation because they are important… I think it is important for us to be able to walk alongside that artist, to make sure that they are not disaffected in their very good questioning…

But also it is the goad for us as the church because we also have to work out these questions for our own faith.”

“Your stereotype of the biblical commentator, the person who helps us understand the bible, would be a very rationalistic, professor type… but shouldn’t we have poets commentating on books like Revelation? We treasure the Bible, we don’t want to get it wrong but that doesn’t mean that we get as literalistic as we possibly can all the time. That’s the safe way to go but, the way the Bible’s given to us, that doesn’t seem like the correct way to go.”

“If the work prior to conversion is more about questions and ambiguity and mystery and then suddenly it all becomes about ‘I’ve found all the answers and life is brilliant and life is peaceful’, that comes across as didactic which just doesn’t work as well in a painting.”

'I don’t know many artists who have managed to rise to the fore and enter into art history who haven’t had a similar situation: the artist, the person who champions them and the person who is paying for it. We maybe don’t like to talk about it because it’s a bit awkward but in the mechanics of how artists work, that kind of relationship is really important.'

“Is a Christian artist required to end or conclude or wrap up their art redemptively, every time? Or can we just show a moment in time? Like Jonny was saying, if you stop a story at a certain point it does look like the devil won; is it ok for us to just present a moment in time without always having to resolve?”

“I think that art is more communication than self expression. I self express every time I go to the shower but the difference is I’m not singing to anyone. It’s just God, me and the bathroom. But if we’re working professionally we’re working within ecologies, we’re working within markets, we’re working within a particular arts arena and we’re making work for other people and I think that means we consider not just the content that we make, not just the subject, but also the etiquette, the way that we dress…I suppose it’s part of being a good guest as well as being a good host.”

“In this generation, you’re not going to win these people with Jesus unless you show a Jesus that cares about the life they’re living. You can’t check out. Do you have to get into culture wars? No. But you cannot be culture blind. You cannot act like this stuff that they’re dealing with everyday… doesn’t matter to God… or else God will not matter to them.”

“How much are we allowed to air our dirty laundry? If we don’t, we look like robots and we’re lying essentially. If we do, people say you could be misleading the young or a Christian might follow your example… I think that’s a very live challenge for many artists of faith.”

“Since the pandemic, you’ve got this real split between people- people who want to go back to how it was and people who are wanting to push into something new and… artists have often been in the second camp of looking to the future and imagining different possibilities and that split gives more potential for isolation.”

“Holiness, I was always taught, was backing away from sin and culture and the world, whereas, if you look at examples of holiness in the Old Testament… Daniel being the prime example, holiness for Daniel was being able to maintain a living faith and trust in God in the midst of culture, while contributing to it.”

“For many years we put great stock in apologetic of worldview… but Scripture has so much to say about imagination that’s kind of got lost… What does it mean to picture what cannot be seen? That muscle that allows us to empathise, to see beyond sight, to find solutions to problems, to picture the new creation and demonstrate it in the here and now?”

Faith in the Arts podcast Season 1 was a joy to make and is now reaching more people thanks to you spreading the word! Messages keep coming in, joining the conversation and wanting more.

So Ally, Marlita and Jonny are warming the vocal cords, sharpening their thoughts and metaphorically prepping the canvas of a second season! To make this possible, we need your help.

We need £400 to get the season off the ground but £800 to make it look and sound the best it can. If we get more than that, we can consider getting some guests on, which would be a lot of fun. And there’s always some exclusive goodies to offer to our supporters, including an extra episode just for you and the all-new HOLD BACK THE NO! t-shirt.

So, if you enjoyed season 1, why not help us make season 2 a reality? https://www.gofundme.com/f/faith-in-the-arts-podcast-season-2

The Faith in the Arts podcast is looking to do a second season... and we need your help!

We loved making Season 1 - and loads of you got in touch to tell us you had a great time listening to it too. Our plan is to release another 10 episodes from the beginning of 2023, but to make this happen, we need to raise funds for the promotion, design and editing of the podcast.

We've got some nice rewards in the mix too, but every donation helps. Check it out here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/faith-in-the-arts-podcast-season-2

Deconstructing faith is a contentious topic. Some see it as highly destructive, others deeply enlightening and, for others, it is an inevitability that every person of faith will have to face at one time or another. As we continue our episodes asking 'why we’re still Christians?' Jonny opens on why he is still the type of Christian that he is and how his faith has changed in the last few years.

There can be a real tension between being an artist and being a Christian. An easy way to relieve this tension might be to stop being a Christian! So, today we ask Marlita why she is still a Christian. Prepare to have your heart warmed as she talks us through her faith journey, how she hears from God and why she wouldn’t be able to know art without God.

If you’d like to join the conversation, please email us at [email protected].

There can be a real tension between being an artist and being a Christian. An easy way to relieve this tension would be to stop being a Christian! However, none of our hosts have taken that option. In the next few episodes, we ask them why, starting today with Ally.

If you’d like to join the conversation, please email us at [email protected].

Could it be that imagination is not only something that is important to artists, but is actually something that we all need: to be human, to live out our Christian faith and even to have any sort of understanding about God at all?

In today’s episode, Marlita, Jonny and Ally continue their exploration of the imagination, asking the questions: what is a Christian imagination and why is the imagination important?
