Six people have died due to the havoc that has occurred after the torrential rains in the Dominican Republic. Few areas of the capital, Santo Domingo, received twice the levels of monthly average rainfall in one day. Out of the six deceased people, two got drowned, two were electrocuted and two got crushed by collapsing walls. Many people are missing still now.
Meteorologists said, though they were aware of heavy rains, they were astonished by the strength of the intense downpour. Gloria Ceballos, Weather Bureau Director said that, some parts of Santo Domingo, received 232mm (9.1in) of rain in few hours.
Agricultural lands and hundreds of homes were damaged in the rains. Luis Abinader (@luisabinader), President of Dominican Republic said, an estimate of the damages would be released on Tuesday.
Abinader added that, poor drainage has increased the flooding in capital: "It's a problem that continued to grow, the city and greater Santo Domingo area grew without a real drainage system".
