The K10 meals Made In Chisokone!
20 Restaurants Closed at Chisokone Market for Poor Hygiene Practices
The Kitwe City Council, through the Public Health Inspectorate Unit, has closed 20 restaurants at Chisokone Market for failure to comply with hygiene standards.
The closures follow an inspection conducted earlier today, in accordance with the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019 and the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia.
During the inspection, it was noted that several restaurants were operating under unsanitary conditions, with staff not wearing the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), posing a significant public health risk, particularly amid recent cholera cases in the district.
In addition to enforcement actions, the inspectors took the opportunity to educate restaurant owners and employees on proper hygiene practices and safety standards for restaurant operations.
The exercise is also been done in markets in Wusakile, Chimwemwe, and Kwacha Constituencies. Restaurants that fail to meet the required health standards will remain closed until corrective measures are implemented.
The Local Authority is urging all restaurant owners to prioritize hygiene and strictly adhere to safety regulations, including providing appropriate PPE for their staff.
The public is also advised to take necessary precautions, including washing hands with soap before meals and after using the toilet, consuming properly cooked and warm food, and practicing proper waste disposal to maintain a clean environment and minimize the risk of disease transmission.
Kitwe City Council remains committed to protecting public health and will continue to monitor restaurant operations to ensure compliance with health regulations.
