TUGUEGARAO CITY — The body of a missing 21-year-old woman was found early Tuesday, May 23, behind bushes in Barangay Annafunan East in this city, police said.

Investigators identified the victim as Jasmin Grace Casale, a resident of Atulayan Norte village and a college student.

24/05/2023

The puzzling death earlier in May of a Taiwanese high school student, who inherited a property portfolio worth NT$500 million ($16.29 million), remains shrouded in questions, even as details of the case play out on the island.

The death was brought to light by Taiwanese media on May 19 when the 18-year-old student’s mother surnamed Chen, accompanied by her lawyer, held a press conference in Taichung City in central Taiwan.

Her son, surnamed Lai, was discovered dead at the foot of a residential building on May 4, just one day after the cremation and funeral of his father, who had died in late April.

Lai and his mother were meant to deposit the elder Lai’s ashes at a columbarium that day, but he had been asked out under the guise of managing his portfolio by an escrow agent surnamed Hsia, alleged Ms Chen. The agent was persistent in his invitation, arriving at their doorstep at around 7am, she added.

Ms Chen, a Chinese national, said she tried looking for her son later in the day, only to be informed by the police that he had died after falling off the 10th floor of a building in the Beitun district, later revealed to be the floor where Mr Hsia lived.

Compounding her shock was news that Mr Lai had legally registered his marriage to Mr Hsia, 26, just two hours before his death. Taiwan in 2019 became the first territory in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.

Ms Chen’s lawyer told reporters that her family believed Mr Lai, who has been dubbed the “$500 million high schooler” by Taiwanese media, had been murdered for his wealth, comprising around 30 properties worth NT$500 million.

Ms Chen told reporters she “would never accept” that her son had committed su***de, adding he had no reason to, describing him as an obedient boy set to read philosophy at a local university. He had just obtained a motorcycle license and a new scooter, which he had intended to use to take his mother out, she said.

She also denied that he was gay, claiming that he had proclaimed his love to a female classmate in school – but was rejected – and that he had met Mr Hsia just twice.

One of those meetings was soon after the death of Mr Lai’s father, when Mr Hsia turned up to pay respects at the wake, Ms Chen’s lawyer said.

Mr Hsia had a longstanding relationship with the elder Mr Lai, and as the escrow agent holding on to the title deeds of the elder Mr Lai’s real estate, he would have been familiar with the value of the properties, which the lawyer said was mostly land.

Speaking to Taiwanese media on Saturday, Mr Hsia said Ms Chen’s views were “one-sided” and not the full picture. But he stopped short of revealing more, on his lawyer’s advice.

Taichung district prosecutors said last week that they had questioned Mr Hsia on May 5 under suspicion of homicide, but allowed him to be released on NT$300,000 bail.

On Monday, Mr Hsia and his father were questioned by investigators at the city prosecutors’ office for a marathon five hours, Taiwanese media reported.

Both men were silent when asked by the media questions such as, “Did you love him?”, and whether they would apologize to Mr Lai’s family.

No details on the interrogation were revealed, but Taichung’s chief prosecutor clarified that the elder Mr Hsia was assisting as a witness. He added that an autopsy was performed on the dead teen’s body on May 9, and that investigations into his death were still ongoing. An official autopsy report was being prepared.

At the invitation of Ms Chen’s legal team, distinguished Taiwanese forensic expert Kao Ta-cheng examined Mr Lai’s body on Sunday and the site where he was found dead.

He told reporters that the injuries Mr Lai suffered showed he was unlikely to have fallen from the 10th floor, noting that there were no hemorrhages in his head or abdominal cavities, with just his right elbow fractured.

“Normally, injuries caused by falling (from a building’s 10th floor) could not be so slight,” Taiwan’s CNA News cited him saying. Dr Kao said he suspected Mr Lai had been poisoned before his fall, pointing at a bald patch of grass where he may have vomited.

Complicated family ties

While investigations continue, some details have emerged, uncovering the complicated ties within Mr Lai’s family.

Taiwan’s United Daily News reported that Mr Lai’s mother had arrived in Taiwan in 2002 for an arranged marriage with a physically disabled man. After the man’s death in 2008, she bore a child with her father-in-law, a boy who would grow up to be the 18-year-old Lai.

The father-in-law also legally “adopted” his biological son to facilitate his property inheritance.

Ms Chen’s lawyer said his legal team has been working on preventing Mr Hsia from inheriting Mr Lai’s considerable real estate portfolio as his partner, building a case on dissolving their marriage while also strengthening Ms Chen’s Taiwan residency status.

The two individuals who acted as witnesses required for Mr Lai and Mr Hsia to register their marriage were two men the latter found in a convenience store and outside the Household Registration Office, The Liberty Times reported.

According to the witnesses, they did not know either men but agreed to Mr Hsia’s plea for assistance, after he claimed their same-sex union “did not receive the blessings” of their loved ones.

MANILA, Philippines — Saying children are “overworked” with 10 hours spent at school on weekdays, Tutok to Win Rep. Sam Versoza has filed House Bill No. 8243 — the proposed “No Homework Law” — to stop teachers from giving homework to elementary and high school students during weekends so as to allow students to “rest and recharge.”

A 2010 Department of Education memorandum circular advised teachers to limit the giving of homework to public elementary school students to a reasonable quantity on weekdays, while no homework is to be given on weekends. HB 8243 sought to institutionalize this for all elementary and high schools across the country.

Since the 17th Congress (2016-2019), lawmakers have tried to institute a no homework policy on weekends, but such measures remained pending before the House basic education and culture committee.

Versoza, in a privilege speech on Monday, said students work extra hours to accomplish their homework. In some instances, parents themselves would finish their children’s tasks.

“The Filipino youth are overworked and yet the Philippines is trailing behind other countries,” Versoza said in his privilege speech.

He cited recent reports that the average intelligence quotient (IQ) of Filipinos was 81.64, while the global average IQ was 100. The Philippines ranked 111th out of 200 countries in terms of average IQ.

Alarming

“This is alarming and proves that the Philippines is in the middle of an educational crisis. If the system is not working, let us improve the system,” Versoza said.

He noted that Finland, China, South Korea, Japan, and other progressive nations already cut back on giving homework to students and that the Philippines should consider this as well.

Versoza said an hour of homework a day was “sufficient to achieve satisfactory results” and that increasing the number of hours for homework “may cause stress to students and their families.”

The lawmaker also pointed to the disparity between the rich and poor in completing school tasks.

“Kids from wealthier homes are more likely to have resources such as computers, internet connection, dedicated areas to do schoolwork, and parents who tend to be more educated and more available to help them with their homework,” Versoza said.

On the other hand, children from disadvantaged homes are more likely to take on after-school jobs, be at home without parents’ supervision, or take care of siblings instead of doing homework.

He also cited data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, which showed that the Philippines had the highest dropout rate among Southeast Asian countries, with a lack of interest in school as one of the reasons cited.

“This only shows that school is not fun anymore,” Versoza said.

Gabe Vincent of the Miami Heat guards Derrick White #9 of the Boston Celtics during the second quarter in game four of the Eastern Conference Finals at Kaseya Center on May 23, 2023 in Miami, Florida.

Jayson Tatum collected 33 points and 11 rebounds as the visiting Boston Celtics staved off elimination with a 116-99 victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Tatum made 14 of 22 shots from the floor — including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. He also had seven assists for the second-seeded Celtics, who trail 3-1 in the best-of-seven series heading into Thursday’s Game 5 in Boston.

Jaylen Brown scored 17 points and Derrick White added 16 to help the Celtics prevent Miami from becoming the second eighth-seeded team to advance to the NBA Finals. The 1998-99 New York Knicks accomplished the feat during a lockout-shortened season.

Grant Williams scored 14 points off the bench and Al Horford added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Celtics, who turned the tide by outscoring the Heat 38-23 in the third quarter.

Boston shot 51.2 percent from the floor (43 of 84) for the game and 40.9 percent from 3-point range (18 of 44).

Miami’s Jimmy Butler overcame a slow start to record 29 points and nine rebounds. Gabe Vincent scored 17 points and Caleb Martin added 16 off the bench for the Heat, who fell to 6-1 at home in the playoffs.

Down by 11 points late in the third quarter, Miami trimmed the deficit to five before Boston countered by scoring 12 straight points to secure a 100-83 lead with 7:25 to play in the fourth. Tatum and Marcus Smart each had five points during that surge.

The Heat moved within 13 with 4:27 to play before Brown converted a three-point play to halt the momentum. The Celtics were not seriously threatened the rest of the way.

Max Strus sank a 3-pointer to stake Miami to a 61-52 lead early in the third quarter before Boston ignited an 18-0 run. Tatum converted twice from beyond the arc and added a jumper during that sequence.

The Heat pulled within 81-77 before Tatum made a jumper and a layup and Williams sank his fourth 3-pointer of the night.

“Kapag siniraan mo ‘yung ibang tao, kailan ‘yon magiging krimen? Krimen ‘yon kung ‘yung sinabi mo, ‘yung lumabas sa bibig mo ay para kang may sinasabing may ginawang krimen, may kondisyon o status ‘yung tao na hindi maganda,” saad niya.

“Number two — you do it in public. Kung pribado, walang problema,” pagpapatuloy pa ni Pia.

“Third is when it is malicious. Kung ang pagkasabi naman [ay] natural lang, para kang nagre-report na something na totoo at walang malisya, then hindi rin,” sabi ng senadora.

“Fourth is nadi-dishonor nga ‘yung tao.

One week shy of his 39th birthday, Carmelo Anthony retired from the NBA on Monday.

A co-headliner in the 2003 draft with LeBron James, Anthony is ninth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list and was a six-time All-NBA selection.

Anthony made the announcement via Twitter, saying, “The time has come for me to say goodbye.”

NBA commissioner Adam Silver responded to the post with a statement pointing to Anthony’s potential next stop.

“Carmelo Anthony is one of the NBA’s all-time great players and ambassadors. We congratulate him on a remarkable 19-year career and look forward to seeing him in the Hall of Fame.”

Anthony played for the Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers.

A 10-time All-Star with 28,289 career points, Anthony was not under contract during the just-completed season.

He last played with the Lakers in 2021-22.

Anthony’s career appeared to be done in 2019, but one year after he last played for the Rockets, he signed to come off the bench for the Trail Blazers and averaged 15.4 points per game.

Anthony was a three-time gold medal winner for Team USA in the Olympics and led Syracuse to the 2003 NCAA national championship in his lone college basketball season. He was drafted third overall by the Nuggets.

A five-year-old girl from Brgy. Tajao, Pinamungajan, Cebu is urgently needing financial help for her upcoming open heart surgery.

Felicity Nillama, 5 years old. (CONTRIBUTED PHOTO)

Felicity Nillama was diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease particularly Tetralogy of Fallot on March 15, 2023. As a growing child, her mother noticed that she is short and thin for her age. Her mother also observed that when she moves a lot, she will then experience shortness of breath. But she did not mind it. Then, a few days before her diagnosis, Felicity had an ear problem that prompted her mother to bring her for checkup. Upon consultation, the doctor managed her ear problem and also found out that she has abnormal heart sounds. So, they were advised to undergo 2D Echocardiogram. When the result came out, they immediately consulted a pediatric cardiologist who confirmed Felicity’s diagnosis. Congenital Heart Disease is a heart abnormality present at birth. The problem can affect the heart walls, valves, and its blood vessels. There are numerous types of congenital heart defects. One of them is Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare condition which is caused by a combination of four heart defects: a hole between the ventricles of the heart, an obstruction from the heart to the lungs, the aorta lies over the hole in the ventricles, the muscular wall of the right ventricle becomes thicker than normal. Because of these defects, the blood that flows out of the heart and to the rest of the body does not carry enough oxygen. Corrective surgery is needed to treat this disease.

The surgery is projected to cost around P1,000,000. In addition to that, her maintenance medications cost up to P1,000 every week.

Following her diagnosis, her attending pediatric cardiologist prescribed oral maintenance medications and advised her parents that she needs to undergo open heart surgery at the soonest possible time. Open heart surgery is a major operation to repair a defect in the heart. The operation requires the surgeon to open the chest to access the heart in order to fix the defective muscles, valves, or blood vessels. Due to the delicate nature of the surgery, her physician recommended to her parents the Philippine Heart Center as the hospital suitable for her open heart surgery. The surgery is projected to cost around P1,000,000. In addition to that, her maintenance medications cost up to P1,000 every week.

Regardless of her heart condition, Felicity exhibits kindness and sweetness. Her mother also described her as a thoughtful girl. Felicity likes to dance and play with her cooking set too. As the second of the two siblings, she is profoundly loved and valued. When asked about her wish for Felicity, her mother expressed, “Every day, I pray for her healing. I wish that her body will be formidable enough to withstand the rigors of the surgery.” Her mother is a housewife who takes good care of the family. Her stepfather, who usually works as a maintenance staff abroad, does not have any current work. These circumstances had ushered financial uncertainties to their family. In addition to their daily challenges, Felicity’s upcoming surgery worries them the most because of its costly nature. Thus, her family is earnestly appealing to generous individuals for financial assistance that will surely play a key role in saving Felicity’s life.

23/05/2023

Are our big business conglomerates widening the gap between rich and poor Filipinos? While big business empires in rich countries seem to have fostered growing economic concentration and widened inequality, the outcome need not be inevitable. But the big business leaders themselves must have the mindset (and the heart) to consciously avoid this undesirable result. Conversations with some prominent big names in Philippine business for a forthcoming Ateneo book give me hope that we do have a new breed of business tycoons who could make big business instrumental to more inclusive development, rather than the enemy of it.

How do we define “inclusive development”? The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has characterized it as “the equitable distribution of economic growth, with particular concern for the most marginalized and vulnerable sectors of society … (and) can be achieved through job creation, as well as the development of human capital and social infrastructure that will allow these sectors to have more direct participation and benefit from the development process.” Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala (Jaza) of the Ayala business empire adds that “the overall well-being of a person and the different components that make a good life possible” must also be part of it, and “includes, among others, access to quality health and education, dignified shelter, gainful and fulfilling livelihood, and a safe and secure environment.” Josephine Gotianun-Yap of the Filinvest group adds social participation and engagement to the list.

How are they leading their respective conglomerates to make a conscious contribution to inclusive development? Their most obvious and direct contribution, as highlighted in the ADB definition, would be in the thousands of jobs they create for our ever-growing labor force. On the other side is the multitude of customers who patronize their products and services, with which the companies can help improve their welfare and quality of life, especially when provided at low cost and high quality. For Lance Gokongwei’s JG Summit group, “providing better choices for customers” is one of two goals defining their avowed company purpose. The other is “creating shared success for our stakeholders,” noting how this now goes well beyond the traditional focus on customers and shareholders but also includes employees, suppliers, and the surrounding community.

Jaza recounts how their products and services in the early years catered mostly to higher income segments, but have since steadily broadened their core offerings all the way to serve the “base of the pyramid.” Ayala Land now has products spanning the various tiers of the market, and prepaid technology transformed Globe Telecom’s erstwhile higher-end customer base to one dominated by a mass market now empowered by access to digital communication. Manila Water substantially widened its subscriber coverage in Metro Manila even within the same fixed service area, by employing business models that enabled them to pipe water even to most depressed neighborhoods, including of informal settlers. It also deliberately sourced plumbing materials, components, and labor from some 1,600 community-based small enterprises and contractors that they trained on the production of such products and on business management. Altogether, Ayala counts hundreds of thousands of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) within its ecosystem spanning all its business units.

Sabin Aboitiz takes similar pride in how the Aboitiz Group integrates large numbers of MSMEs in its value chains, most prominently through Pilmico, whose feeds business sources locally grown corn from small farmer cooperatives to supply their feed mills. These in turn provide a vital input for the livestock and poultry industry, thereby contributing to both sides of the agriculture supply and demand equation.

Meanwhile, the group’s banking units UnionBank and City Savings are the acknowledged industry leaders in digital banking services nationwide, boasting a clientele spanning generations of microentrepreneurs, employees, public school teachers, companies, and professionals.

Being big need not mean being bad, after all.

An earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude struck off the northern California shore on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), causing no reported damage or injuries.

The USGS said the quake occurred at a depth of 10km (6 miles) and took place 108 km (67 miles) west of Petrolia, a community of about 1,000 people in rural Humboldt County.

A handful of other towns in the sparsely populated region of northern California also reported feeling light shaking, according to the USGS.

Earthquakes are routine in California. The last fatal temblor in the state was a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that hit Northern California only 5 km (3 miles) offshore in December, injuring at least a dozen people and killing two.
