Have you heard of second harmonic generation microscopy? Take a minute to learn about this cutting-edge tissue imaging technique and its powerful application for studying fibrosis within organs.

Second harmonic generation is a process whereby two photons of the same wavelength interact with a material to generate a photon with exactly half their wavelength.

Only certain materials, such as collagen for example, exhibit the correct properties for this process. By transforming the light that hits them, these materials create contrast in an image. Perfect for picking them out amongst other components.

Second harmonic generation microscopy’s potential for medical applications lies in its capability to image and characterize fibrosis in different organs such as the kidneys, liver and lungs, where increased fibrillar collagen density, associated with chronic diseases like diabetes, hepatitis, etc., correlates with poor prognoses.

Combined with AI techniques, the imaging method offers unparalleled quantification of fibrosis in tissues. It provides invaluable insights for monitoring disease progression and responses to treatment.
