Anytime you show, it’s crucial to think about what you’ll do and how you’ll do it ahead of your class, no matter the event. Here are my six tips for your preparation process anytime you compete in ranch riding, thanks to Ride TV coach Bud Lyon.

𝙏𝙞𝙥 1: 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙊𝙪𝙩𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙧𝙖𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜
"The patterns themselves are just guidelines. Ranch riding patterns have more room for ex*****on than something stricter like a reining pattern. You don’t have to perform it exactly as it says on the page. I advise paying more attention to the words describing the pattern than the drawing itself."

𝙏𝙞𝙥 2: 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙖 𝙒𝙖𝙡𝙠
"While your horse settles in, head to the arena where you’ll show. With your pattern in mind, walk the arena to get a feel for where the elements will play out and how they best flow together."

𝙏𝙞𝙥 3: 𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙨
"Identify sponsor banners, panel connections, marks on the arena wall, and more that can indicate where to transition from one maneuver to the next. If you’re outside, find trees, shrubs, an outbuilding that can help remind you when to speed up, slow down, circle, and more."

𝙏𝙞𝙥 4: 𝙒𝙖𝙡𝙠 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙩 𝙄𝙩
"Saddle up your horse, and head to the pen where you’ll show. Walk and trot pieces of the pattern to get a feel for where elements will fall, where you can take your time when you might need to be quicker in your transitions, and how you’ll approach each piece."

𝙏𝙞𝙥 5: 𝙋𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙨
"Instead, focus on doing small parts of the pattern. Separate the maneuvers or break the pattern into sections. If you do practice the entire pattern, only do it once or twice. Anything more than that can be problematic because your horse learns what’s coming and then starts to think ahead of you."

𝙏𝙞𝙥 6: 𝙆𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙃𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚
"Our standard of excellence in ranch riding is to complete transitions in two strides—one stride is even better. Showing this skill to the judges can earn you credit when used correctly. The time you spend riding at home and showing gives you the ability to identify these strengths and capitalize on them."

Cactus Reining Classic To Host First World Reining Championship Qualifier on American Soil During 20-Year Anniversary

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – January 24, 2025 – For the first time since the World Reining Championships’ (WRC) inaugural event in 2023, an opportunity for Americans to qualify for the prestigious event on their home turf is coming to the United States in 2025.

The qualifier will take place at the Cactus Reining Classic, which will celebrate its 20-year anniversary March 14-22 at WestWorld of Scottsdale in Arizona. Managed by Brumley Management Group, which hosts three premier reining competitions on the West Coast, this milestone event will be the perfect site to host the qualifier due to the Cactus Reining Classic’s significant standing on the global stage, said Francesca Sternberg, founding member of the World Reining board.

“Brumley Management has cemented its reputation as an industry leader and is celebrated for its innovative and visionary initiatives, such as the iconic The Run For A Million,” Sternberg said. “Being included in this renowned event is a dream come true for the World Reining management team. This qualifier provides American riders from across the United States, as well as many international riders who have relocated to America to pursue their reining careers, with a unique opportunity to secure a place on their National Team.”

The WRC was created to reintroduce team competition to reining and encourage new nations to participate, thus growing the sport on an international scale, Sternberg said. The format is similar to the World Equestrian Games (WEG) with team and individual competitions, but instead of limiting each country’s team to four riders and two alternates, the WRC introduced other divisions, allowing for greater participation. The categories include Junior Riders, Young Professional, Senior Professional and Non Professional Riders, Prime Time (50 years and older) Non Professional Riders and Para-Reining. The event has grown substantially since its inception, with 20 nations having expressed their intent to send teams to this year’s event.

“There is nothing more inspiring — or patriotic — than competing under your country’s flag,” Sternberg said. “Team events bring a unique and thrilling dynamic to a sport traditionally centered around individual achievements. Riders who have previously represented their nations at the WEG often describe the experience as the pinnacle of their sporting careers. Expanding these opportunities to more riders and encouraging new countries to participate in the sport is something we are incredibly proud to offer. It’s a step toward growing the global reining community, while giving more athletes the chance to experience the unparalleled honor of representing their nations on the international stage.”

Riders can participate in as many World Reining classes as they wish and can also participate in events abroad. Other qualifying events will take place around Europe and in China and South Africa. Each nation will make its final selection of teams and individual riders. Wildcards will be given to 2024’s Top 5 Open and Non Pro National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) riders and to NRHA Million Dollars Riders. All other riders must qualify by achieving the minimum score in their division during their qualifying ride.

The WRC will take place July 7-12 at CS Ranch in Givrins, Switzerland. More information, including qualifying scores in each division, can be found on the WRC website. To enter the Cactus Reining Classic qualifier, visit the website, and follow the Cactus’ page to get the latest updates.
