Bongbong: I will not withdraw from 2022 race

2022 presidential aspirant Ferdinand Romualdez “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. says he is not afraid of the “Petition to Cancel or Deny Due Course” his certificate of candidacy (COC) filed by a “cross-section of political detainees, human rights and medical organizations that opposed the Marcos dictatorship” before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) on Tuesday.

The petitioners are claiming that Marcos is “perpetually disqualified from holding any public office, to vote and participate in any election” having been “convicted by the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City in a July 27 1995 Decision for his multiple failures to file income tax returns.”

In a radio interview on Wednesday morning, the former senator admits “hindi ko nga naintindihan dahil sinasabi nila may problema daw yung aking kandidatura. May isang kaso daw na hindi naayos. Hindi ko alam. Sasagutin na lang namin eto pagdating.”

He points out the group’s move to disqualify him from running for president in next year’s elections is part of politics hatched by his enemies who are frightened of his impressive survey numbers.

“Kasama na rin yan sa pulitika lalo na yung aming mga kalaban ay imbes na humarap sa eleksyon kasi siguro natatakot sila sa numero, idi-disqualify na lang ako,” he says.

The social media favorite likens his current situation to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte when the latter faced the same issues when he gunned for the presidency in 2016. Duterte won by landslide getting over 16 million votes.

“Kung maalala ninyo, yung takbo din ni Duterte ganun din nangyari. Sinusubukan din siyang i-disqualilfy dahil hindi nila kaya sa eleksyon. Parang ganun din ang pakiramdam ko na ganun din ang ginagawa sa akin,” he says.

But he finds the filing of the petition as “ hindi unexpected yan. Alam naman natin na gagawin ang lahat para pigilan ng kalaban.”

And he won’t back out.

“Hindi ako natatakot, hindi ako aatras, hindi ako magwi-withdraw. Patuloy lahat ng aking gagawin. Hindi ako mag-slide down. Patuloy lang ang aking kandidatura,” he firmly stresses.

In another development, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez debunks reports that he released a statement where he allegedly said that there is no clear case for disqualification versus Marcos.

“That statement was made BEFORE the petition was filed. At that time, there was, in fact, no case for disqualification filed,” Jimenez says in a tweet on Wednesday. JOSE RONALD F. SIONGCO/GDM
