The submission window for StepAway Magazine‘s ‘Fantasy’ issue is now open.

Customarily, our award-winning magazine is hungry for literature that evokes the sensory experience of walking in urban environments. Our forthcoming issue has a fantastic twist. We are eager to receive prose and poetry that evokes the sensory experience of walking through imaginary worlds. In celebration of science fiction, fantasy and all other genres of speculative fiction, we ask writers to lead us through the landscapes of unknown planets or parallel dimensions; dystopian cityspaces or elven villages. As the flâneur, flâneuse, or urban wanderer, moves through the labyrinthine streets of a city, observing and recording its dangers and delights, our writers will do the same – but in the realms of the unreal. Encounters with mythical creatures, strange architecture, and dangerous magic are probable, but the possibilities are endless. Build us a weird world and guide us through it.

Stating “Fantasy Issue” in the subject line of your email, submit one story, novel extract, or poem to: [email protected]

Submissions should not exceed 5000 words.

The deadline for submissions is: Thursday 30th June 2022.

We are excited to announce that the guest editor for this special issue will be novelist and poet Caroline Hardaker, author of Composite Creatures which was named as one of The Washington Post’s top science fiction novels of 2021.

Flâneuse: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The submissions window for StepAway Magazine’s ‘Flâneuse’ issue is now open.

We are eager to receive poetry and prose that evokes the sensory experience of the female walker in specific neighbourhoods, districts or zones within a city. This special summer issue, in our 10th anniversary year, will celebrate how the flâneuse conceives, interrelates with, and inhabits public space and their relationships with particular cities.

We welcome literature inspired by the female gaze, celebrating the freedom felt, or not as the case may be, by women in an urban environment. We also welcome literature that offers a female perspective on architectural design and urban planning, or that explores the theories, ideas and work of women artists and writers with an urban focus, such as Vivian Maier, Rebecca Solnit and Virginia Woolf.

Stating “Flâneuse Issue” in the subject line of your email, submit one story or poem only to: submissions[at]stepawaymagazine.com

The deadline for submissions is July 7th 2021.

We are looking forward to reading your unique creative responses pertinent to this themed issue, and to paraphrase Woolf, your written spoils from the treasures of the city.

FOR POETRY AND PROSE (Non-fiction and Fiction)

-19

WRITERS – in light of current events, we have decided to publish a special issue of StepAway Magazine focusing on the coronavirus lockdown. Given that the majority of us are restricted from walking in public spaces, the issue will venture beyond the theme of the urban walking narrative with which our magazine is usually associated. We are eager to publish poetry and prose about observing the empty streets of the city from a position of isolation, dreaming of walking, social distancing, separation, loneliness, and every other aspect of life during this strange time. A publication date for this issue is yet to be decided, but it is likely that we will accept and publish work on a rolling basis with the aim of sharing a wide range of voices from across the world. Stay well. Stay home. Write. Submit: [email protected]
