Thrilled to share the vibrant life of Washington state, a diverse ecosystem with a treasure trove of natural wonders. I want to highlight some of our amazing wildlife. First, a flash of bright color caught my eye - a stunning Western Tanager perched on a treetop. With its vivid plumage, this bird is a true jewel of the forest. Next, a majestic bald eagle guards its nest. Finally, by the shore, a seagull calls out, their voices carried on the ocean breeze. Observing these incredible animals deepens our commitment to preserving our natural world for future generations. 💙💚

Photo taken in Ketchikan, AK where eagles roam.

With 30 nesting sites and plenty of fish, Ketchikan is a bald eagle haven. In May, mature eagles start preparing their nests and getting ready for their eggs to hatch in June and July. Eagles are thought to breed for life and in Alaska, they have been observed to live into their early 30s.

“We believe that eagles fly highest in the ether, closest to creator.” - Cheryl Haven, Ketchikan Inter-Tribal Dancer.

Here are some more of San Diego’s Finest Fishermen! 🌊🐟🌊

These dedicated individuals are more than just fishermen. They ensure we have access to the finest, locally sourced seafood possible and you can catch them every Saturday at market.

From left to right:

Peter Halmay, F/V Moto, Main species: urchin and top snail

John Strait, works with and

If you’ve ever been to , you’ve probably run into the man, the myth, the legend himself - Peter Halmay! Pete has been diving in California since 1971. He started out diving for abalone, then changed over to sea urchins in 1976. He’s played a big role in the fishing community here , fostering relationships with fishery managers, organizing collaborative projects with fishermen and local nonprofits, and more. He also gives the best golden one-liners during film interviews! ⬇️

“These commercial fishermen have devoted their entire lives learning about the ocean. It’s not even a way of life. It’s an ethic. It’s a reason for being.”

Meet another incredible husband/wife team, John and Nicole Glawson of 🌊🐟🦀🦞

Main species: Sheephead, rockfish, crab, lobster

John has been commercially fishing for about 25 years. He first started fishing off piers then migrated to fishing boats, got his captain’s license at just 18 years old, worked on sport fishing boats, and then commercial fishing.

John catches the fish while Nicole takes care of all things related to the fish market. Her favorite part is working with her husband and educating the public on species they catch to make sure the customer learns about all the variety they have to offer.

“Feeding the community is the best thing that any fisherman can do. If we can keep everything that is caught here and keep feeding the local community, it’s great for the environment and people’s health. They know where their fish is coming from, it’s fresh, and it helps create jobs, keeping the money local.” - Nicole

Meet Carri and Wayne Higginbotham, owners of 🐟🐟🐟

Main species: rockfish

Wayne started commercially fishing when he was 14 years old. Both him and Carri enjoy being out on the water, taking their grandchildren out, and learning about the ocean.

“For me, fishing sustainably is huge, especially now. We fish for our future, not just for the next year. I have grandkids and I want them to be able to out go and fish.” - Carri

🐟🌊 Local fishermen are the backbone of coastal communities, braving the seas day in and day out to bring in the freshest catch.

As you stroll along in downtown San Diego, you will find these individuals proudly displaying their bounty, offering everything from succulent fish to savory crustaceans.

Their dedication goes beyond just fishing; it’s about sustaining our community. By selling their catch locally, they not only provide us with delicious seafood, but also support our economy and ensure that San Diego stays well-fed.

This month we will be sharing some photos and stories from our work with these incredible people over the last year 🐟🌊🎣🦞🦐🦀

While we typically don’t recommend walking on muddy trails, the dog park at Oxbow Regional Park was hard to resist. Located along the Sandy River Delta, at the confluence of the Sandy and Columbia rivers in Oregon, it boasts over eight miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trail, a closed Wildlife Habitat Zone that supports migratory birds and wildlife, and forest and meadow habitats. In 2013, an old d**e was removed from the Sandy River, restoring its natural channel and improving habitat for salmon and steelhead.

Willamette Falls is the largest waterfall by volume in the Northwest, dropping 42 feet over a horseshoe-shaped ledge with a crest length of approximately 1,500 feet. Prior to the development of the Oregon City area, it is thought that the falls may have spanned as much as 2,500 feet across. Due to the industrialization of Oregon City, the falls have lost most of its natural appeal but there is a lovely walking trail that allows you to get a more aerial view. The land on both sides of the river immediately adjacent to the falls harbors a hydroelectric station, a paper mill anda set of non-operational locks. An effort is currently under way by the municipality of Oregon City and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde to restore much of the now defunct industrial areas around Willamette Falls.

Where the Pacific Ocean meets the Gulf of California stands Cabo San Lucas’ iconic Arch, “El Arco” 🌅🌄

Over countless millennia, layers of sand, minerals, and sediments were slowly compacted and hardened on the ocean floor, giving birth to the solid rock structure we know today. 🗻⠀

But it was the tireless dance of the waves and the caress of the wind that truly transformed this formation. 🌬️🌊 The ocean’s waves chipped away at the softer layers of rock, sculpting the Arch into its unique shape. Every curve of the Arch whispers tales of our planet’s ancient history, inviting us to stand in awe of the beauty of creation 💙

In 2019, we participated in the Festival de Aves in San Quintin, Baja California. The festival does an incredible job blending local culture, nature, and birds. With the goal of reaching more people, each year the festival has grown and expanded its offer. To date, more than 1,000 people from Baja California and the United States have attended the festivals and learned about the importance of protecting the birds of San Quintin. We’re hoping this the year we finally return!

Happy harbor seal, just the way we like them. Sadly, an offshore algal bloom has been poisoning marine life off the central and northern portions of the Southern California coastline. The San Diego coast is at the trailing end of the bloom's impacts, but SeaWorld's marine life rescue team has rescued seven sea lions and a dolphin believed to be suffering from the poisoning this month. As always, maintain your distance (photo taken with zoom lens). Our hearts are with our animal friends.🦭

Behind the scenes of Zoo Peepers 🦉 I, along with two amazing Latinx Media Lab Fellows, followed the charismatic recovery ecology team at the San Diego Zoo as they worked to understand ways to halt and hopefully reverse the burrowing owls’ decline in San Diego County. That look when it’s almost the weekend but there are still 2.5 more days of work 😔

Some fun facts about blue penguins 🐦

- They are the smallest penguins in the world at 36-43 cm or 13-15 in tall.

- They are only found in New Zealand and Southern Australia.

- New Zealanders refer to them as the “Little Blue Penguin” and Australians call them “Fairy Penguin.”
