Fish fun while frolicking in the shallows 🤿🐟
While we were heading back into shore from a dive at La Jolla’s underwater canyon, we came across this school of bait fish that ended up circling us for a couple of minutes. Watch how they change directions in unison every time I exhale my bubbles. A friend of mine recently became rebreather certified meaning she dives on a closed circuit where she recycles her own air - no bubbles. Needless to say, she makes more fish friends than I do now 😆🐟🤣

Fish to Families, a program funded by @sandiegofoundation, collaborated with the San Diego commercial fishing industry and local chefs to help bring delicious seafood meals to those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Over the course of 13 months, almost 40,000 meals were distributed across San Diego. Both the fishermen and chefs are eager to continue the Fish to Families program as well as expand direct marketing for our locally caught fish.

Our favorite part of filming is the people we get to meet and stories we get to hear.
To get your week started, here’s some advice from our favorite fisherman. What could be better indeed.
Today we get to celebrate our favorite place 🌊

An alarming new scientific study in @sciencemagazine warns that rising ocean temperatures and habitat loss will cause another mass extinction. But, reducing fossil fuel emissions can help reduce species loss. Now is the time to #actonclimate.
Oldie but a goodie from Love Your Wetlands Day! Wetlands are one of the most biodiverse habitats and act as vital service stations for millions of migratory birds as they rest and refuel. 🌱🦆 Wetlands also hold cultural-spiritual value for Indigenous communities around the world.
Celebrating our seas for California Ocean Day 2022! 💙
With the third longest coastline in the U.S. (behind Alaska and Florida), it’s no wonder that California has such an amazing underwater ecosystem!

It’s been 10 years since the Marine Life Protection Act redesigned California’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). These areas, created to ensure the preservation of our state’s sea life and habitats, have helped rebuild ocean species while also contributing to scientific knowledge around marine conservation.

Snow! It may be cute and small when it falls, but it’s mighty when it comes to our water supply. ❄️🌨💧
Snowpack is measured by the thickness of snow and is found in regions with high elevation. Once melted, it feeds into streams and rivers.
However, this valuable resource is under threat with climate change. Warmer weather brings less snow and more precipitation affecting the ability of these regions to produce hearty snowpacks. Per the USDA’s data on Natural Resources Conservation Science from 2020, the April snowpack in the western United States mountain regions has declined by 86%.
The time is now to enact policies to protect not only our planet, but to adapt to climate change. 🌎💙

Filming in nature has its benefits - beautiful nature and wildlife.
BUT it also has flies…….🪰😆
Enjoy this montage of Lowell during our filming about a first-generation hunter and his love of nature and conservation.

Rays, rays, rays!
Rays are closely related to sharks and are the largest group of cartilaginous fish meaning they have skeletons made of cartilage instead of bone.
Similar to sharks, they don’t use their eyes to find prey. They instead use electro-sensors to locate food by detecting electric fields in the water.
Fossil records date rays and sharks back to the Jurassic era so you can think of them as your gentle, modern day dinosaurs.
You can find many species of rays right here in San Diego! Guess we can say that we swim with dinosaurs…how cool is that! 🦕🌊

Back in November 2020, we had the amazing opportunity to work with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and help film Sarah-Jeanne Royer’s interview regarding her work on marine plastics for an episode on healthy oceans 🌊🌊🌊
The episode aired this past weekend so we wanted to share a clip with you!
Sarah is a marine plastics expert and has worked all around the world. She is completed her post-doctorate research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, CA and is now working on microplastics at the Center for Marine Debris Research at Hawaii Pacific University!
Valle de Guadalupe, famous for being Mexico's premiere wine destination, is as popular for its wine 🍷🍇 as it is for its farm-to-table cuisine. However, lack of regulations mean that over the years developers are trying to build bigger establishments that put the local ecosystem and water availability at risk.
When visiting, follow three important rules: be kind and generous to locals, this is their home - treat them with respect; look for wineries that are eco-friendly and sustainable; and dine at restaurants that use quality, local ingredients and promote local wines. Local farmers, Valle winemakers and your taste buds will thank you. 🥬🥕🌶
