Live power lines are especially harmful if one approaches them without due diligence. The dangers of combining humans, railways, and electricity are well documented. Live power lines are especially harmful if one approaches them without due diligence. However, those dealing in railway operations will be more than aware of the risks that harmful currents passing through engineering components can have on a train’s bogie system. A shocking impact on bearings? Electrical currents, generated by asymmetries in a motor’s magnetic circuit, can lead to the premature failure of traction bearings like the ones found in axle boxes. As well as potentially harming bearing elements, lubrication can become contaminated, burn away, or behave unusually under the influence of a passing current. If a suitably insulated solution is not deployed, craters can form on the bearing material itself as fragments of the bearing mat

Rail travel have been an essential mode of transportation for centuries, and the development of train wheels and bearings has played a critical role in their evolution.

From the earliest wooden carts to modern high-speed locomotives, wheelset bearings that ensure a smooth spin have undergone numerous changes, adapting to new technologies and demands throughout the years.

The bearing selection process is crucial to ensure the safe and efficient operation of a train, as it directly affects the ride quality, speed, and maintenance requirements. And knowing the operational parameters of the application is the number one consideration – but understanding the complex challenges that wheelset bearings face is in itself a tough task.

Challenges on the tracks

Firstly, the chosen bearings must be able to support high loads, while minimizing wear and tear on the rolling surface. On top of that, many passenger trains operate at high speeds, so bearings must be able to withstand high rotation

With increasing demand for sustainable practices, the rail industry is facing the challenge of lowering its environmental impact while maintaining operational efficiency.
Reveal how bearing refurbishment or remanufacturing could provide a perfect solution by reducing waste and promoting a circular economy in this critical industry.

Bearings in railway systems are the true workhorses of the industry. First and foremost, they are responsible for carrying the weight of the train (and its payload), ensuring smooth movement as it glides along the tracks. But everything in life has its service life. Over time, these bearings can experience wear which can lead to decreased performance and potential safety hazards. Bearing refurbishment or remanufacturing is the process of restoring bearings to their original condition and performance levels.

How does it work?

The reliable performance of railway equipment heavily relies on the durability of its components, particularly the bearings which are responsible for rotational motion, load carrying, shock absorption, etc.
Naturally, failure of such critical elements can result in costly downtimes, decreased productivity, and even catastrophic accidents. As such, designing and maintaining bearings with extended (and predictable!) service life is critical for the railway industry to meets its productivity goals

The way it was

Traditionally, bearing life calculations relied on load- and load-capacity-based models, which estimate the bearing life based on sub-surface fatigue. However, these models have limitations, such as their inability to account for surface initiated and other non-sub-surface failure mechanisms, making them less accurate for bearing life prediction. And given the trend of downsizing, increased power density in rail applications, and the challenge of lubrication, it is increasingly
