Stories are one of the oldest forms of learning – it’s how people used to pass down knowledge from one generation to the next. And they’re still incredibly important today for a few reasons. They help people remember information, they help people connect to the information, and they help people make decisions based on that information.

That’s why we’ve asked Jenny Midgley to come talk to us about how to use stories in your business the RIGHT way – to connect, engage, convert and build a real relationship with your audience.

So whatever you're talking about whether it's a picture, a video, a graphic, a meme, a GIF, copy, right, like the words of a book, etc, it's all about making something relatable in a way that creates an emotional connection with your audience!

Not getting enough sales? This might be the reason...

My clients are either new to online entrepreneurship, or they've been at it for a while, but the sales piece is usually very inconsistent.

For most people I think the uncomfortable thing is actually just the willingness to talk to somebody else and actually make an offer.

Often I'll hear someone say, “I'm just so frustrated, because I put this course together, and it's just not selling”. And I'm like, “when's the last time you made an offer? Because we might need to look at the way that your offer is structured, or the way you're talking about your offer”. And they respond by saying, “Oh, well, I actually, I haven't actually made an offer for this yet”.

I know it sounds silly, but that is something that I hear all the time.

When people feel like they're not good at selling or their thing isn't selling, they're not even giving it a chance most of the time.

They're not giving themselves a chance to find out if their offer is good or bad if the pricing is right or wrong.

Give yourself permission to play and find your own thing that works best for you...

Just because someone else is doing something that’s working for them, doesn’t mean that it will work for you.

Experiment with what’s not working and keep what is working and soon enough you will develop your own process.

It’s not 2015 anymore, it’s not trendy to over-edit your pictures anymore, people want more of a natural look.

So how can you edit your photos to make them look good and not overly edited?

There's so many different editing tools out there that can help you kind of spruce things up.

So you don't want to overdo it and make it look like it's completely different from the original, but it comes down to what your brand values.

Presets are really helpful as well. So for those who use Photoshop and Lightroom, savvy presets are a great tool to use.

And for me, I know if I like a certain photographer and the way that they do their style, I can download their presets and apply it on but also adjust it to make sure it's not exactly the same as someone else.

Canva is also really great for templates. So you can take a photo and put it in a template and add your own text or logo onto it. So you’re not just downloading a photo and just slapping it onto your feed.

When considering a pivot in your business, what I don't want you to do is just decide things on a whim because you see someone else's success.

Something that I say a lot is do not measure your bloopers against someone else's highlight reel.

It's very easy to watch these bigger names who are saying, “Oh, I made $500,000 on this launch, blah, blah, blah”...

And what you don't know is that they haven't seen their family in three months. And they're $100,000 in debt because they had to pay a 16 person team, and there's all the years of work that led up to that successful launch.

Seeing those people on Instagram and Facebook saying that they made X amount of money in such an amount of time, and how easy it is. And now if you just joined their $10,000 coaching package, they'll show you exactly what they did. That could be very, very real, but it could also be the fact that you're seeing exactly what they want you to see, and that you're not seeing the background.

So don't measure your bloopers against their highlight reel.

To be able to make your street team effective, you should use people that are within your niche.

For example, Jenny and I are excellent street team members for one another because we're friends. But the other reason, which I think is really important, is that we're within the same niche and we can support each other because your ideal client and my ideal client actually share a lot of the same characteristics, it makes it a heck of a lot easier.

Now, if you were in the weight loss niche, that would make it almost impossible for us to be on the same street team because I'm in the marketing niche and those are two completely different things.

Say someone in the weight loss nich promoted my stuff, their people are going to be like, Why is she talking about marketing? It will just seem very, very strange. And secondly, I might get one or two people from you, BUT they're not going to be the right people.

So that's the caveat to your street team. It has to be people that you trust and it has to be in complementary niches.

Want to learn more about how you can build a collaboration with others who will promote you like crazy? If so, check out Episode 46 where we break it all down for you: https://systemtothrive.com/46 or search System to THRIVE on your favorite podcast platform.

Do you often stretch yourself out too far and over-work yourself?

It;s important to understand your daily cycles. For example, I'm most productive in the morning, I need a nap around 1:00pm, then I can come and hit it again at 6:00pm.

That's self-care, and business-care and time management all rolled into one.

If you try to fight against your own self, your own body, it's going to be uphill the whole way. And that's why the time study is so important.

The time study tells you all this stuff, and it helps you build out this plan.

The time study tells you when you need to take breaks, and when your body is saying it's time for rest.

here are two categories of list built.

Category #1 is a list build event: This is a one time limited event based opportunity for people to connect with you. For example, summits, challenges, webinars, classes, and workshops are all considered to be a list build event.

Category #2 is an evergreen or always on list build: For example, this could be your video series, lead magnets, webinar replays, PDFs, or even a free chapter of your book. It’s whatever you're giving away that you can always give away.

You didn’t forget about the taxes did you?!

The one thing that a lot of small business owners tend to forget is taxes.

It’s SO important to make sure that you save aside money for those yearly expenses.

Figure out what that total number is that you need to save aside monthly so that when those yearly bills come, you have the cash to pay for it.

Especially if you're in a state that collects sales tax, that money has already been accounted for and you need to be able to pay your state back for those taxes.

If you stay behind the scenes in your business and don't allow people to hear you and/or see you, then yes, things are going to continue that slow roll, and you might not be seeing the growth you want.

You need to get out in front of the business.

This is something that everybody at some point has to learn and accept, it's just part of the job, there has to be a front man.

By the way... you're the front man, congratulations!

So get out in front of that business by showing up consistently and being out there, and that's going to make a huge difference.

Did you know there's a holiday every. single. day? And while they're off the wall, kinda funky, and completely full of personality… they're also a HUGE way to drive attention and traffic into your business. For your social, your sales, your offers, your launches… you can tie anything into a holiday.

We didn't tell you to do the big holidays, we're telling you to do the stuff that people aren't doing... don't be afraid to be a little different!

In order to connect in a real way, tell a real story.

With my cat Jamison, my *National Black Cat Day* cat, I can tell the story of how when we found him in my mom's yard, we thought he was a girl, his name was originally Zoey.

And then when we took it to the vet, we found out it was actually a boy and we renamed him.

But that's part of the story. And it's just fun. And I know that you might think you're too buttoned up, and I'm not saying you have to go completely out of control with it, but let yourself have a minute of fun. Just a minute.

This is often something that people don’t realize that they can do in their business and still seem relevant. But now you know!

We're never done making connections with our ideal client.

I like to correlate it to dating, and when you think about the dating process and building a relationship, even when you're married… you are never done building that relationship.

That's how a lot of relationships fail in the real world, when people are done.

Creating that connection and establishing and really building a relationship is so important, and the same goes with your business.

There comes a point after the sale where you still need to make that connection with them on a regular basis so that they continue to buy from you, because those are the people that come back every time, right?

Webinars have been around since the 1990s, but the idea and strategy behind them has changed in the last 30 years.

Not only is the technology different… but the market is more sophisticated and crowded. Which means there are more webinars to distract your audience from actually showing up and taking the action you want them to take.

Listed below are 3 creative ways to get more people to show up on your webinars, which one will you implement next time you host a webinar?

In this important and judgement-free episode, we’re tackling a HUGE social issue: diversity in your business.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a growing concern for many large corporations – but entrepreneurs aren’t off the hook, either. It’s vital that we not only understand what diversity, equity and inclusion really IS… but how we can focus on ensuring that our businesses are set up the right way to maximize our efforts.

This is not simply hopping on a fad; it’s making a conscious decision to do the right thing and highlight real talent that until now, has gone unnoticed because of a difference in race, gender, physical or mental ability, orientation or identity.

Natajia Miller breaks down exactly what Diversity, Equity and Inclusion MEAN and how you can focus your efforts the right way withOUT being inauthentic, jumping on the bandwagon, or experiencing cancel culture.

Utilize social media, find out where your people are hanging out, and start connecting with them.

If they're on Facebook, interacting groups, if they're on LinkedIn, start interacting in comments and DMS, optimize your profiles, start showing up.

And be consistent about it! That's the big key there is consistency.

You can't show up today, not show up tomorrow and expect that the day after tomorrow, people are going to pay you.

There are 3 models you can use to create income in your business:
Done for you model
Done with you model
Do it yourself model

The first one is the done for you model, Alison and I have been playing with this little model for a while now.

You're already familiar with this one, it's the one where the client contacts you, you do the work and congratulations, you get paid.

Frankly, this is the one that's most popular for clients because they don't want to have to do it all themselves, you come in as a service provider, and you fill that gap, you fix it for them, you do the thing.

On the pro side, it's often a high fee, you get to charge a lot for it, because you're taking things completely off their plate, and there's a lot of value in there. And because of that, you don't need that many clients to make your monthly goals.

There is also a pain of disconnect there as well, because if they can't get the stuff done without you, they come back if your particular business is the kind people come back to. If you build websites, they may not always come back to get new websites built that frequently. But, it is also really great for referrals if you leverage it because they can give direct experience and say, “This is who I used”. And people are always looking for great service providers to accomplish things in their business.

And because of all of those things, you don't need a huge email list, you don't need a huge following to be successful with this strategy. In fact, I have been doing this for 14 years, very successfully. And I didn't start building my own list until relatively recently.

Want to learn more about the 3 business models a service provider can use to scale? If so, check out Episode 62 where we break it all down for you: https://systemtothrive.com/62 or search System to THRIVE on your favorite podcast platform.

Pitch weaving is weaving your offer very nonchalantly very easily, very organically within the webinar content itself by saying simple things like, “hey, if this sounds really good, this is what I teach my clients in my one on one program or in my group program”. And you know, “you'll have an opportunity to check it out shortly or book a call with me”, things like that.

Now, here's your call to action within this plan. Depending on the program product or service that you're offering, it's most likely going to be a call for you. If it's one-on-one coaching, it's a call. If it's group coaching that might have a bigger price tag, it's more likely a call. If it's a $35 product, you might be able to sell it right off the webinar. And that's totally cool, but for the most part, I want you to look at doing calls.

There are a couple caveats here. One of them is that for this to be successful, you do need to have a funnel that actually gets people to opt in.

If you have a funnel that doesn't get people to opt in, and no eyeballs on your thing, it's going to be a challenge. So spend the time and make sure that you actually do that.

One of the things I suggest people do when they write a book is they make sure that it's the right book for their business, that it's going to be well received by their readers.

Also, actually do some research to find out what their readers want to hear from them.

So that is the number one thing I would suggest people do: get an idea to write it and run it by your readers.

It's a great way of validating the information that you want to share before you've spent all of your time and energy on maybe the wrong idea.

When you have something that you want to do, do you usually get focused and stay on it until it’s done?

OR do you mess around, dilly dally, and wait until insecurity takes over?

Well if you often wait around, I challenge you to just get it done and see how it goes so you don’t experience that imposter syndrome

Follow your instincts and make sure that you're putting your all into it!

One of the things that I get my clients to do is to create a welcome video.

The welcome video really reiterates the fact that you're in the right place, that you're going to receive this information that you're getting all the things that we talked about on the opt in page.

That's your first point of contact for the sale.

So what’s the science behind why play works so well for your business?

Usually your brain is in a beta state, and your prefrontal cortex is where your inner critic is. And your inner critic is what a lot of people are striving to keep quiet to protect themselves, right?

It protects you from all the dangers in the world… but when you go from a beta state to a flow state, part of your prefrontal cortex actually shuts down and your inner critic starts to dissipate.

And then what happens is your implicit mind appears, that's where the creativity comes, and then all of a sudden, you start to see all of these opportunities in front of you... you get this shot of dopamine, and you can become highly curious.

One of the biggest challenges that adults have is we get so fixated on results, that we think things have to happen a certain way. But when you're in a flow state, you're open to all the opportunities in front of you.

When you build your webinar, give massive amounts of content, overload them!

Give them the full experience, give them the full plan they can leave with, and give them a ton of value…

If you think this is giving away the farm, or it's too much, drop this mindset!

We want you to actually over give and you're not giving them your signature plan, let's be honest, but you're giving them some great value and something that they can do going forward.
