Girdwood/Whittier

We found the perfect spot between Girdwood and Whittier to boondock for a couple of nights. We were only planning on staying for one night but after seeing the views we decided to stay longer. Finding a level spot was the hardest part but we managed to do just fine. The lake was absolutely beautiful. We stayed in a campground just down the road 4 years ago and had that as a back up if this didn't work.

We stopped into Girdwood Brewing and had some of the best IPAs we have had in a while. I wish we were closer so we could stop in a few more times. If you are in the area check them out!

We made our way through Whittier for an afternoon of exploring. We drove the jeep through the tunnel and found ourselves at a little mom and pop shop for a sandwich and a beer overlooking the ocean. We met some great people and enjoyed just hanging out and relaxing. I took the same picture of Lily 4 years ago and it is just crazy to see how much she has grown up.

{Moose Pass}

We found a great open lot next to the river to camp for the summer solstice party in Moose Pass. We met up with some friends to walk around town and listen to the local bands. Lily also lost a tooth while hanging out in the beer garden. She just handed it to us and had blood running down her face and shirt!

{Reindeer Farm}
📍Palmer, Alaska

This stop was a hit for both the kids and us! If you are going to spend money on a tour around this area this is the place! It is a little more expensive than the Musk Ox Tour BUT you get to feed reindeer and pet them!! We could have spent all day petting the reindeer and they even had babies!! We walked around the farm and saw alpacas, feed a moose named Lily and it was Moose Lily's birthday. We walked through their reptile house and saw the elk, pigs and goats. We ended the day feeding the slobbery cows and a tractor ride. The kids still talk about feeding the reindeer and can't wait to get to the North Pole to see Santa!! This was so much fun for us all.

{Musk Ox Farm}
📍Palmer, Alaska

It was baby time at the Musk Ox Farm and we decided we need to go see a baby Musk Ox or any Musk Ox, because we haven't seen one before. We purchased our tickets and went on the tour. Apparently, if you are the size of Hunter the Musk Ox thinks you are a predator and will charge at you. We had to keep both of the kids super close with the group. A lot of the fence had been previously repaired. It was fun to see some of the ox up close but a lot of them were far off and that was fine with us. Our guide was super informative and gave us all the facts and stories about all of the ox on the property. Their hair/fur is SO EXPENSIVE!! There is just chunks sitting on the ground. We offered to pick it up but our guide said not to pick it up because the ox will charge at you!!! Note to self: Don't go around musk ox alone!! The kids loved seeing the ox but they were kind of bored standing and listening for so long. If you have older kids I would recommend this but it was only an hour and on the more affordable side for tours in the area.

{Palmer, AK}

We were told to check out Palmer, AK. We didn't look into the town or do any research. I found a place for us to park the RV and we booked 5 days. We pulled into a little campground called Springer RV Park. It is on the outside of town, next to a golf course and the local airport. The planes would just go over our RV all day (as long as the wind allowed them to fly). Hunter loved the airplanes and would just stare outside. We found out from our neighbors that it was Colony Days. Their local town celebration. We decided to go into town and check it out. On their list of events was called "bed races" we knew we had to go and watch. Little did we know they didn't have enough entries to actually run the race. Here is where Colin thrives lol. He managed to talk 1 of the high school kids to enter with him. After some monetary negotiations from his mom he agreed. They found out you need 5 people to enter. The gentlemen quickly got on his phone and called all his friends. One of the participants was wearing sandals so she quickly traded shoes with me and off they were running a bed down the street! We also watched their parade, ate at a couple of restaurants and breweries and the kids rode little ponies. It was such a fun week and we were sad to leave such a fun area. We also went to the Musk Ox Farm and a Reindeer Farm but they deserve their own posts! Stay tuned.

{Valdez, AK}

After spending our 2 nights in a rest area we made our way to Valdez. We stayed at the Bear Paw RV Resort. This is big rig friendly and also provided us with full hook ups in the middle of town. We were able to walk almost everywhere. We used this spot as a reset and stock up on groceries. We did a grocery pick up at Safeway and learned that you have to roll with what the grocery store has. Good thing Mexico prepared us for this! We went in the store twice, the first time there was only a few loaves of bread and the 2nd time they were completely out of milk. We walked to both of the breweries and enjoyed some beer. This was the first Sunday the famous Lu-Lu Belle offered their Sunday Church Service. It was so aweTop Of The World Adventures a boat. The captain fully donates his boat for the whole hour and takes everyone out of the bay. We even saw a whale spout! If you get a chance to go to Valdez take a trip out on the Lu-Lu Belle whether you are on a tour or if you just go for the Sunday Service. We were told that tours are amazing and it is unpredictable how long you will be out.

{Alaska}

Our first night in Alaska was spent in a rest area parking lot....well actually we spent 2 nights here. We needed to sit so Colin could get some work in. We found a nice spot with a view of the river just off the side of the road. Just after we crossed into Alaska Lily says, "Mom I just pushed out my tooth with my tongue!" So the tooth fairy made her way to Alaska our first night here! Our first night here we were 1 of 3 RVs for the night and the 2nd night we were by ourselves. After we set up we noticed a bear right next to our camper. He was long gone.....probably sat there all winter. The kids loved going up to see the fur up close but we strongly advised to not touch! We kept our eyes out for more bears but didn't see any! It was a cold 2 nights but it was good to not be driving anymore. We then left to make our way to Valdez.

{Dawson City}

After a few days of sitting and not traveling we made to the long journey to Dawson City Yukon. We were super excited for this part of our trip. We are big Gold Rush fans and were excited to go see a few of the local mines. We left the RV at our campground Bonanza Gold Motel and RV Park and set out to visit town. We stopped in at the visitor center in town and found some of the local places to visit and what stops will help keep the kids attention. The ladies at the visitor center were amazing. They gave the kids some coloring pages to occupy them while we read all about the area. We found a couple playgrounds and we explored a mine! You can also borrow a gold pan to try your hand at striking rich! We opted to try and keep the kids dry since it was a colder day. After a couple days of exploring we put our RV and jeep on the ferry to cross the river and started our adventure on the Top Of The World Highway.... I mean we had to go on the highway right?? We were told to take this highway when it was a clear day, but we didn't get that option and it was raining and foggy almost the whole drive. It made it very uneventful but not as beautiful as we hoped. We soon crossed into ALASKA!! It felt good to finally reach the border.

{Canada Day 3}

Traveling 8+ hour days definitely takes a toll on your body. We are all tired of driving....Canada is so big!! We knew it was going to be a long drive to Alaska but man it is LONG! We had some beautiful views, icy covered lakes, gravel roads, a small time caravanning with other RVs, a stop at Jade City and finally a stop at Watson Lake for a much needed break!

We finally saw more people RVing on the road. Most of the people up to this point just had regular vehicles and would pass us like it was nothing. We finally caught up to others but only because they were on the side of the road checking on their rigs or stopping in the middle of the road to take pictures. (FYI DO NOT BE THAT PERSON).

We stopped at Jade City and saw some beautiful stones. The kids absolutely loved that they had a digging site with toys out front. Very smart so the adults could look at all the stones while the kids played. They even offered free coffee for the travelers. I have a small reel coming about Jade City and some of the beautiful stones they had for sale.

We finally made it to our stop at Watson Lake. A place we have been wanting to stop at since we starting watching other RV families make the trip to Alaska. We stopped into Sign Forest and found some other YouTube signs and left a sticker of our own! Find it and tag us when you are up there.

We are wanting to make a sign and hang it up on our way back south. Does anyone have a good company to make a sign, preferable metal so it lasts?

{Canada Travel Day 2}

This was the day of bears! We had our count close to 20 bears in 2 days. It was absolutely amazing. We continued our trek to Dawson City, knowing we still had several days to get there we decided to take it nice a slow, well the roads had a lot to do with that. They had a ton of pot holes and frost heaves. Nothing that Baja did prepare us for. We made a fuel stop in Kitwanga along with everyone else who was traveling on the road. Just down the road are some great Totem Poles that we stopped to look at, again with a ton of other RVs. The RVing to Alaska FB Group has helped with stops and reading mile by mile in the Mile Post also helps with cool spots to stop and see. We stopped for the night at a pull off with a view of a lake. We kept looking for bears outside but we didn't see any while we were parked.

{Crossing into Canada}

Our adventure to Alaska starts today! We left from Leavenworth and crossed over at the Sumas crossing into British Columbia. We fueled up before we crossed the border and we were ready to go! Our border agent was not the friendliest of people and asked us all the normal questions: Where are you from? Where are you going? Do you have any guns with you? Drugs? We answered all the questions but that wasn't enough for him. We went into further questioning asking where are guns are located and when was the last time we have been finger printed. We were truthful where they were at and they were locked up far from Canada. Colin had been finger printed for work and for his old conceal carry permit. That then triggered us for a search. We went in to the office and had a really friend guy. Gave him our keys to the rig and explained how to get into everything that was locked. He was great but still needed help getting into the RV, he couldn't quite figure out the lock. Colin helped him and explained we were getting searched because we were once finger printed. Colin explained why he was finger printed. They guy said just give me a minute and you will be on your way. He was super nice and let us go without any incident. We stocked up on groceries and we were on our way to Alaska. We pulled over for the night in a rest area off the side of the road and boondocked our first night next to a stream. We ended up driving 4 straight days and boondocking every night on the side of the road in a pull off! Stay tuned for our next adventure!

{Leavenworth, Washington}

I don't know how many more times I can post about how much we just love Leavenworth. It's a small but beautiful town. We stay at the KOA in town and if you have bikes you can just ride into town from the RV park. All the parking spots you have to pay for but it is pretty reasonable. We drove into town everyday and walked around. The weather was perfect! We loved showing family around exploring some new parts we didn't make it to last year. We even had a date night!!

{Crater Lake National Park}

Crater Lake was so beautiful, however, we could only explore a very little portion of the lake. May is not the month to experience this National Park. The amount of snow they still had in the middle of May was a lot. We knew we were going to be in the area and had some extra time so we decided to make the long drive. When I scheduled to stay in Bend and drive to Crater Lake, I did not factor that almost all the roads to the National Park were closed and that we had to drive to the south end to enter. This made it a 2.5 hour drive each way. We had one road in and one road out to explore. We were able to make it to the lake but it was very icy getting up to see it. According to their website they are still clearing roads in the National Park in June! So the best time to see the lake is in July and August. They do have a we**am on their website so you can make sure you can see the lake. Sometimes, the air quality is bad and you have zero visibility.

{Bend, Oregon}

If you haven't visited Bend, Oregon, you need to put it on your list ASAP!! If you love waterfalls, hiking, Crater Lake National Park, craft beers and everything you need store wise. We experienced snow storms as well as nice and sunny days. It was nice to just sit and relax for the 3 weeks we were there. Staying at the Sun Outdoors was just what we needed. The sites are large and they provide you with your own trash can and recycle bin that you can put out when you are ready for a trash pick up. The campground also has a full size kitchen, foosball, pool table, hot tub, fire pits and all day coffee and tea for you to enjoy. All the staff here was absolutely amazing when we had so many packages sent to the campground to prepare for our trip to Alaska.

Exploring town reminded us of a town close to where we launch: Fort Collins, CO. Lots of breweries, parks and restaurants. If you are in the area check out the Old Mill area. The Old Mill is located right next to the river with lots of restaurants and an amphitheater which we were told a lot of big names come and play there. The locals hopped in the river on paddleboards and just relaxed during the day. It was a perfect place for us to explore and relax. We will be back.

Did you know that there is still 1 Blockbuster left?? We stopped in while staying in Bend, Oregon. It is more of a destination stop versus a place to rent videos, however you can still rent DVDs here!! Talk about a blast from the past. Every Friday we would rent a couple of videos to watch over the weekend. It was definitely a blast from the past. They also had VHS for sale and players for those who don't have players anymore 🤣🤣

VHS, DVDS and Blu Rays seem to be something that you don't see anymore....do you still watch DVDs?

{Redwood National Park}

Coming to the National Park in the off season has its perks!! We were able to go and hike fern canyon without needed a time entry and it was worth it! If you are in the area make sure to get a permit for the Fern Canyon and hike down the river. The Redwoods are some of the most amazing trees ever! Don't have a lot of time? There are several hikes that are less than a mile and you can see several trees. You don't even have to leave the main highway to go through the park! You need to put this park on your must visit list! Try and see if you can spot a banana slug! We were very unlucky in finding one!

{Elk Country RV Resort}

Have you ever pulled into a campground and immediately see 20-30 elk? I mean it is called Elk Country RV Resort and sure enough there were a ton of elk. They bed down in the nearby trees and enjoy all the grass in the area. This campground was a perfect spot for a trip into the Redwoods.

When I checked in all the rules about the Elk were discussed, being from Colorado we know not to go around the elk and give them their space. I was also given all the information for the nearby towns, what spots to check out in the NP. It was everything we needed. Our sight was one of the longest sites we have ever seen. We could have fit 2 maybe 3 more rigs in our site!

Would you stay at this campground with all the elk right outside your door?

{Glass Beach}

📍Fort Bragg, CA

We drove over an hour from our Harvest Host down a super windy road to come and see the famous glass beach. Once we arrived a local told us where the best spot to see all the glass. After hiking down what felt like the side of a cliff we made it to the beach. It was a cloudy day so the colors didn't pop but it was amazing to see how much glass was on the beach.

We asked each other how all the glass made its way to the beach. After doing some googling, I found that down the road used to be the town dump and the trash would just wash into the ocean after being set on fire with Molotov Cocktails to reduce the size of the trash. The beach is now deteriorating because visitors are taking glass home as a souvenir from their visit. While we were there, a local was collecting all the smelted glass to sell. Please just leave the glass alone!

One of the prettiest vineyards I have ever been to for a Harvest Host. After we checked in we made our way to the back of the property. We found ourselves the first ones to arrive so we had our pick of location. We parked in a big open field overlooking the vineyard. We settled in and drove to the tasting room and had ourselves a couple of flights. It was a perfect day to sit outside and enjoy the sun and wine. The kids loved playing on the grass. The views here were absolutely beautiful!

{Petaluma, CA}

This stop brought us to Petaluma, a town that Colin worked in several years ago when the wild fires swept through the area. We stayed at the KOA, which I do not recommend. Why? All the pictures make it look absolutely beautiful, which it is. However, the trees are not trimmed and the road ways are narrow. The entry to the KOA is a narrow road not made for 2 way traffic. We had to unhook to make a 3 point turn to turn onto the road to get to our spot. We also had to back in to a pull through spot to get to our pull through spot. We ended up bending our radio antenna trying to get into our spot. Once we were settled in to the spot we set out to explore the town. Only being here for 1 night we made our way to Lagunitas Brewery and Russian River Brewery. We decided to come back to visit all the wineries when we can leave the kids with the grandparents and get to enjoy ourselves. We will definitely be back but maybe we will stay at the fairgrounds. It was recommended to us and we decided to spend the extra money to stay at the KOA.

A campground right next to a marina and a short walk to the beach where you can watch sea otters and sea lions. We stayed at the Moss Landing KOA which was an express campground. They offered showers, restrooms and corn hole boards. It was perfect spot for us. Just outside of Moss Landing is Castroville, which is the artichoke capital of the world. This is definitely a short stop location but there is plenty to do around. We used this location as a stopping point for day trips to Monterey, San Francisco and Santa Cruz.

{Morro Bay, CA}

Trying to get out of the cold in California has been hard for us. Our original plan was to hit as many of the national parks in California as possible. They were getting a lot of snow and Sequoia and Kings Canyon was still requiring the use of chains. So we altered our plans to head to the beach. That's the beauty of this lifestyle. You don't like where you are just move!

We moved to Morro Strand RV Park, which is a small RV park just minutes from the beach. We walked right to the beach one day and found SO MANY SAND DOLLARS! You couldn't take one step without stepping on one. The kids thought it was the best thing ever. We had lunch on the water and watch the sea otters swim under the pier. We checked out the local brewery and talked with a family who was renting an RV for spring break and thought this lifestyle might just be for them!
