With a price of 300 million dollars ! Wondering why it looks terrible? and not worth its price? Take time to to read the story of an English art collector.

An English art collector went to Japan to buy a work from a master artist. They agreed that the artist would create a rooster. The artist told the buyer he would need time for the painting. The buyer went away for a week and came back and when he arrived the artist said he needed more time. This went on for three months and the collector prepared to return to England, more than a little frustrated. The artist said that they should not rush this and that when he returned it would be ready. The collector considered whether the artist was making a fool of him and whether or not he would ever get the painting.

When he returned to Japan after a year, he asked the artist if the painting was ready, and he said yes, come to the workshop. The collector entered the workshop and it was absolutely silent, all of the assistants excused themselves and left the room. The artist takes out a piece of paper and without missing a beat, executes a perfect, vibrant, epic painting of a rooster. As he finally stops, he asks the collector if he likes it. “Yes!” he says, “but why did you make me wait a year and a half for what took you less than an hour to create? You are making me look like an idiot!”

The artist simply takes him into the back room of the workshop where there are hundreds of paintings of roosters. An assistant is feeding failed paintings of roosters into the fire. “I could not have created that rooster in hour a year ago.”

The point is that the work that goes into creating an artwork is not simply encapsulated in the finished work. Every step of the way costs the artist something and sometimes a buyer will compensate them for that.
