Tonight I was experimenting with the Tecsun AN-100 / AN-200 AM Tuned Loop Antenna while trying to participate in DX Central’s MW Frequency Challenge (an unequivocal logging fail today - but that’s another story). On 1600AM, I tuned into the “Multi-Format-Network Show,” (which includes samples of the programming they feature). I started out with a strong enough signal on 1600AM at 1000UTC / 0400CST, and heard the call letters W240EH 95.9 Evanston / Chicago at that time - but it wasn’t until after hearing the station ID mentioned with the frequency at 1011UTC, that I realized I was actually listening to a broadcast on 1590AM (WCGO / W240EH 1590AM / 95.9FM out of Evanston, IL). Heard a couple of shows being showcased: “Food & Wine with Chef Jamie Gwen,” and “The Rabbi and the Reverend with Rabbi Daniel Cohen and Reverend Greg Doll.”

0855UTC Still working on goal-oriented AM listening for DX Central’s MW Frequency Challenge (Week 6: 690-720kHz) ~ (DX Challenges .com). I hear two stations fading in & out on 710AM depending on how I position the “internal” rotatable AM antenna. With ends oriented NW to SE - I intermittently pick up C2C AM on WOR out of NYC, NY w/ a strong sig ~ Dist: 755mi. If it’s oriented SW to NE , I get a talk-show on an unknown station -

05/02/2024

I did some goal-oriented AM listening overnight as part of DX Challenges .com MW Frequency Challenge (Week 6: 690-720kHz). Here are the stations I heard:

1029UTC: WGN Chicago, IL - 226mi.

1058UTC: WQNO New Orleans, LA - 690mi.

Sea Otters on Science Friday.

Heard on 83.3 FM - WNIN - Evansville, Indiana at 1300CDT.

“Last month, a rowdy sea otter was stealing surfboards off the coast of Santa Cruz California, biting chunks out of surfboards, and even catching a few waves.

It’s rare for a sea otter to get so close to humans in the wild. Authorities are trying to capture the otter, named 841, for her safety and that of the surfers. But, a month later, she remains at large.

Guest host Flora Lichtman talks with Jessica Fujii, sea otter program manager at the Monterey Bay Aquarium to get the 411 about Otter 841, and talk all things sea otter—including their sophisticated use of tools, carrying food in their armpits, and busting myths about hand holding.”

An expert from the Monterey Bay Aquarium talks all things sea otter.

Cruisin' the Decades Has a Multigenerational Audience!

"Cruisin' the Decades," a music program hosted by Brad Savage who plays music from each decade of the past century, is popular with listeners of all ages. Dave Baillargeon of Windsor, Ontario sent the following message:

"Hello Brad. Great show Friday night and thank you for the shout out. The signal was once again very strong. WRMI always has a quality signal to my area in Windsor, Ontario. I listened to the show with my wife, son and mother. My son 17, my mother 78 and me 53. We were all waiting to see what you were going to play from "our" generation. We teased Grandma when she knew the songs from the 1920's. She kept saying she was not that old and that she was from the 1950's, but we played up her age anyway. My boy surprisingly knew quite a few of the post 1960's songs.
Listening to the broadcast with 3 different generations was fun. Keep up the great work, and we'll continue to look for your show on Friday nights. You have a great time slot!"

Crusin' the Decades can be heard Friday nights at 10:00 pm Eastern Time on 9395 kHz, as well as Saturday nights at 11:00 pm Eastern Time on 5950 kHz.

Not AM, but worth a listen. I found a great blues history show last night on 88.1 KDHX FM St. Louis called “Nothin’ but the Blues,” hosted by Ron Edwards. Here’s a link to a fantastic archive of the songs that have been featured in past shows - many with specific themes. If you like the blues, you might find something in here you’ve never heard before.

~

Ron Edwards presents "Nothin' but the Blues" every Sunday evening. Ron's vast knowledge and unique insights make for an entertaining history lesson on all forms of blues.
