Our next guest for "an hour or so" will be an artist who gave a 2020 masterclass in how to continue to grab people's attention during a global pandemic, as we are joined by Katherine Priddy for a chat and a handful of songs.
The last two years have been a whirlwind for Birmingham-based folk artist Katherine, who, having emerged onto the scene with her long-awaited debut EP Wolf in 2018, has been steadily turning heads since. Wolf has been championed by the BBC 2 Folk Show, BBC 6 Music’s Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson and BBC Wales, as well as receiving exceptional reviews. The great Richard Thompson named it as his Best Thing I've Heard All Year in MOJO Magazine whilst Folk Radio UK pronounced the release to be "something extraordinary indeed...one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard. Her tone, phrasing pitch and sentiment...it’s flawless". After quickly selling out of the original pressing of Wolf, Katherine bowed to popular demand and released it digitally, as well as selling out two further re-presses of the EP.
Katherine's haunting vocals and distinctive finger picking guitar style have been captivating growing audiences around the UK. With the buzz around Katherine building, her shows have been packed out with people travelling afar to catch her perform the tracks live, including sell-out headline shows as far afield as Brighton and Durham. Indeed, Katherine’s stock continues to rise within the folk world and beyond.
Katherine's original works are delivered with an emotional maturity, depth and a tenderness that still carries a darker edge, citing Nick Drake, John Martyn, Tunng and Imagined Village amongst her influences. Her lyrics are particularly noteworthy - a tribute to her life-long love affair with literature and poetry and the stories she weaves are transporting. It is clear that, despite the delicate nuances of her sound, Katherine is not a fragile wallflower, but a woman who means business. 2021 promises to be an exciting year for Katherine Priddy!
