Media Storm: We speak to a drug dealer
Demand for many of the most illegal drugs, like cocaine, is largely driven by white, wealthy buyers. But when you look at the demographic breakdown of those imprisoned for meeting that demand, the discrepancy is uncomfortable.
In Media Storm's latest episode, a county lines dealer tells us about life in the illicit drugs trade. How did he get into it? Who are his clients? Does he feel any guilt? Is he afraid?
All this and more, wherever you get your podcasts.

Media Storm: Paul Atherton on how to report on homelessness
What does the mainstream media get wrong when reporting on homelessness?
🗣 Filmmaker Paul Atherton, who has lived experience of homelessness, shares some tips:
👉 Never ever use the otherising term “the homeless”
👉 Let people experiencing homelessness speak for themselves: less CEO’s of anti-homeless charities and more lived experience!
👉 Be more creative with imagery so as not to prop up stereotypes: homelessness is not just rough-sleeping!
👉 Point to systemic failings rather than exaggerating individual ones

Media Storm: The Big Issue's Liam Geraghty on why preventing homelessness is key
£2.6 billion per year.
That’s how much it could cost the government if 225,000 renters - currently in arrears due to Covid-19 - lose their homes. The Big Issue crunched these numbers to show PREVENTING homelessness saves money in the long term.
It’s also just humane, says reporter Liam Geraghty.

Media Storm: Chase Archer Evans, campaigner to legalise homelessness
It sure is creative, the myriad of ways countries have sought to criminalise homelessness. From trespassing and begging laws, to administrative requirements for permanent addresses, even hostile infrastructure like spikes on flat surfaces—many places around the world bend over backwards to keep homelessness out of sight.
One of Media Storm’s guests this week, Chase Archer Evans - an expert on homelessness by firsthand experience - says this is the first barrier to actually fixing anything.

🎧 Episode 5 - Criminal Justice: Does Prison Work? 🎧
Justice Secretary Dominic Raab has announced tougher sentencing powers for magistrates in the sweeping Police, Crimes, Sentencing and Courts Bill that projects the UK will have 20,000 more people behind bars by 2026.
Will this deter people from committing crimes? Or will stuffing more people into over-capacity prisons only make things worse?
Lisa Brooks has lived experience of both crime and prison. Her answer is clear. Hear more wherever you get your podcasts.

Media Storm: Steve Ali on seeking asylum
This is Steve Ali, writer, actor and Syrian refugee.
In Episode 1 of Media Storm, Steve tells us about his experiences of seeking asylum, and why he thinks the mainstream media reports on refugees the way it does - with a deep dive into some of this week's newspaper headlines.
"The interviews are, in a way, traumatising to a lot of asylum seekers. Because those people have just arrived from the worst situations, having lived unspeakable things, then the first thing they have to do is literally recount all of the things that have happened to them".

Media Storm: Refocussing the refugee narrative
As the inevitable, awful news lands that at least 24 people have drowned after their dinghy sank in the English Channel today, let’s take a moment to realise what those people must have been through, what they risked, just for a shot at sanctuary in the UK.
Too often, this story is told from the perspective of onlookers; people who have never even had to contemplate those risks.
That must stop. It’s time to refocus the narrative on the people who are really in crisis. It’s time to see the story through the eyes of those who live it. In the name of empathy, and in the name of accuracy.
Episode 1 - El Dorado: Why do refugees ‘love’ the UK? Out from 6am tomorrow, wherever you get your podcasts, with guest Steve Ali.
