"Sugo Kabataan, Bantay Kalikasan, Arat Na!"

The Schools Division Office (SDO) through the Curriculum Implementation Division (CID) in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-PENRO), Rizal Hinulugang Taktak Protected Landscape (HTPL) Management Office, and in partnership with the City Environment and Waste Managament (CEWMO) organized an educational outreach event entitled DALAW -TURO, last September 20 at Hinilugang Taktak Protected Landscape Ground.

Dalaw-Turo according to the Convention on Biological Diversity is an innovative educational activity designed to raise awareness and engage communities in environment conservation. It came from the Filipino word "to visit" (dalaw) and "to teach" (turo), which translates to Teaching Visit.

With the theme "Kalinisan Pangalagaan Para Sa Ating Kinabukasan", Dalaw-Turo aims to educate students through hands-on experiences about the importance of protecting the environment.

The program featured various activities such as lectures on the history of Hinulugang Taktak and the processes of a sewage treatment plant; and interactive sessions like poster making and slogan making that was designed to make learning about the environment engaging and impactful.

ANHS Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) President Princess Xyriel Asuncion and Mr. Romeo S. Yusay attended the activity with other selected secondary and elementary officers.

Learning from EJ Obiena: Perseverance Over Triumph

In sports, victory often takes the spotlight, but EJ Obiena’s journey at the 2024 Paris Olympics offers a deeper lesson. After narrowly missing an Olympic medal in the men’s pole vault final by just one attempt, Obiena shared, “I still came up short. I'm sorry.” His words, filled with both pain and humility, remind us that true success isn't just about the podium—it's about the relentless pursuit of excellence.

Athletes like Obiena endure immense physical and mental challenges. “I've done everything I can to be where I am at. I'm proud of the effort from my team, myself, and everyone who made this possible, but it doesn't make it any less painful,” he admitted. His journey highlights that an athlete's worth isn't defined by one event but by their dedication and resilience over time.

After the Olympics, Obiena expressed deep gratitude for the support he received: “The measure of a man or woman is NOT a singular event-like the Olympics-but a cumulative or collective measure over time.” This perspective reminds us that an athlete’s legacy is built on their entire career, not just a single moment.

As a nation, we should celebrate not just medals, but the spirit of perseverance. Obiena’s commitment to continue striving—“I am back in the game... You are going to see more from me”—inspires us all to embrace the journey, knowing that true victory lies in the unwavering pursuit of our goals.

Filipino Athletes: Lifting Stereotypes, Bending Gender Roles

In sports, certain disciplines are often categorized by gender. Yet, two Filipino athletes, Hidilyn Diaz and Carlos Yulo, have defied these stereotypes. Diaz excels in weightlifting, traditionally seen as a male-dominated sport, while Yulo shines in gymnastics, often considered a female domain. Yulo recently dazzled the world by winning two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, adding to the nation's pride and historical achievements.

Hidilyn Diaz: A Force in Weightlifting

Weightlifting emphasizes sheer power and physical strength, making it a sport typically dominated by men. Hidilyn Diaz shattered this norm by winning the first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines in weightlifting at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Her triumph was not just personal but also a groundbreaking moment for women in sports.

Diaz faced numerous obstacles, including financial hardships and limited support. Her dedication and resilience led her to success, inspiring many young women to pursue their dreams despite societal expectations.

Carlos Yulo: Shattering Conventions in Gymnastics

Gymnastics, known for its elegance and artistry, is often associated with femininity. Carlos Yulo has defied this stereotype, becoming a trailblazer for male gymnasts from the Philippines. In 2024, Yulo made history by winning two gold medals at the Paris Olympics, a first for his country in gymnastics. His performances, characterized by exceptional skill and grace, have redefined what it means to be a male gymnast, emphasizing talent and hard work over gender.

Impact on Filipino Society

Patriotism in the Philippines is at an all-time high due to these historic wins at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Filipinos have expressed immense gratitude and pride in their athletes, celebrating their success on both national and international stages. Diaz and Yulo’s achievements resonate deeply within Filipino society, challenging ingrained gender norms and inspiring a more inclusive perspective on individual capabilities. In a culture where traditional gender roles are prevalent, their stories exemplify breaking barriers and redefining possibilities.

Their victories encourage young athletes to pursue their passions without fear of judgment or limitation. They demonstrate that anyone can excel in any field, regardless of gender, with determination and dedication.

Hidilyn Diaz and Carlos Yulo have brought gold to the Philippines through their sporting achievements. More importantly, they have made significant strides in breaking down gender stereotypes. Their stories highlight the power of perseverance and the importance of challenging societal norms. Diaz and Yulo have lifted and bent the very perceptions of gender roles in sports, showing that excellence knows no gender.
