𝗠𝘂𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆𝗮𝗿 (𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗿), the first solo exhibition of artwork by award-winning poet, songwriter, musician, and translator Jesús Manuel (Jess) Santiago.

The art exhibition features 73 paintings in watercolor by Santiago, offering to all a glimpse of how he quietly worked on hundreds of portraits of family, friends, colleagues, and fellow cultural workers in the Philippines arts community for almost a decade.

Many of these artworks were made during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown when social gatherings were restricted and limited. To date, these have never been exhibited publicly as a whole body of work.

Regarded as among the pioneers of people’s music in the Philippines, who penned and performed among the classic protest songs during the dictatorship, Jess Santiago’s original songs are compiled in albums such as Halina (1991), Obando (1993), and Puso at Isip (2008) while his writing was published in books notably the poetry collection Gitara: Mga Tula, 1975-1985 (1997) and Usapang Kanto: Kolumberso (2018). As a translator, he pioneered the Filipino translation of Ernest Hemingway’s 1951 classic novel The Old Man and the Sea, among other projects.

Curated by Lisa Ito, Santiago’s first solo exhibition as a visual artist unveils another rich facet to his practice as a cultural worker: truly an icon in the Philippine arts and culture community.

Featuring Jess Santiago
November 18 (Sat), 2:30 p.m.
1F Lobby, UP Fine Arts Gallery
Online via FB Live

We invite all to a Memory Project and Artist Talk for “Mukhang Pamilyar” (Looks Familiar / Familiar Faces), the first solo exhibition of artworks by award-winning poet, songwriter, musician, and translator Jesús Manuel Santiago (Jess Santiago). The show will be extended up to November 27, 2023 at the UP Fine Arts Gallery.

On Nov. 18, the artist will be present to talk about the artworks, his songs, and multi-disciplinary projects. Curated by Lisa Ito, Mukhang Pamilyar featured his portraits in watercolor and charcoal, unveiling another rich facet to Santiago’s practice as a cultural worker and an icon in the Philippine arts and culture community. The talk highlights several stories behind these portraits of family, friends, and colleagues, interspersing these with songs that Santiago composed as among the pioneers of people’s music in the Philippines during Martial Law.

This event is brought to you by the UP Fine Arts Gallery and the Concerned Artists of the Philippines, in cooperation with the UP College of Fine Arts Department of Visual Communication , Dang A Dang Radio, and Asian Music for Peoples’ Peace and Progress with the support of the UP Diliman OICA.

“Mukhang Pamilyar” will be on view up to 27 November 023 at the Gallery One, UP Fine Arts Gallery, Arts & Design Building West Hall, College of Fine Arts, UP Diliman, Quezon City. Gallery hours are from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

LAND IS LIFE:
Stories from the Farmers’ Struggle in the Philippines

Sunday, April 16, 8pm
Extinction Rebellion Camp
Invalidenpark, Berlin

According to recent reports by Global Witness, the Philippines is one of the deadliest countries in the world for land and environmental activists. This violence is largely targeted at indigenous and rural communities, who are leading the fight against extractive industries, such as mining and monocrop plantation farming. In this screening at the Extinction Rebbelion protest camp in Berlin, ALPAS Pilipinas will present two short films focusing on the ongoing struggle led by peasants and agricultural workers for genuine agrarian reform in the Philippines. This struggle is centered on the demand for a democratic distribution of land and for a sustainable food system that is guided by the needs of the people, rather than by the pursuit of profit. In these films, we will see how the struggle for climate justice is inextricably linked to issues of labor, human rights, and state violence.

According to the digital collection's introduction: "Malayang Musika ng Pilipinas is Arkibong Bayan's continuing work of collecting and featuring socially relevant, patriotic, progressive, nationalist, and even revolutionary songs from the Philippines intended for educational, advocacy, and non-profit purposes only. The rights to the songs remain with the individual authors, composers, and publishers. A big part of the song collection from the 1970s to 2000s came from Engr. Mon Ramirez's audio capture and editing of cassette tapes these music albums are in."

The documentary „Daluyong“ chronicles the 1984 Lakbayan, showing the dissatisfaction of the Filipino people with the Marcos regime. It features the songs of tens of thousands of people marching from the different regions to the capital. The protest was met with violent repression from the government.

„Daluyong“ is screened in our exhibition to contextualize the longevity of Lakbayan as a protest tactic. It shows how in the Philippines people's artists are embedded in the struggle for social justice. They are not entertainers but comrades.

This super-8 film was made by then students Nil Buan & Joey Clemente with the support of their college friends. The last known betamax copy was digitized by Prof. Rose Roque. Subtitling was a collective effort by the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP-PUP) for CAP's Memory Project and further improved for the online screening in Cinemata 2022.

//

Bring your protest tunes! In Saturday’s collective listening session everyone is invited to bring a song, an album, anecdote or sonic memory in the context of protest. You can bring them in form of a vinyl, cassette tape, digital file – or in your own voice. Through this sonic sharing we want to reflect together how music accompanies us in processes of resistance and search for justice.

//
Bringt Eure Protestmusik!

Expanding to the visual arts, the songs in our current listening exhibition by Dang A Dang Radio are accompanied by works from Federico "boyD" Dominguez, a visual artist and musician from the Philippines known for putting a focus on farmers and indigenous peoples in his art. The featured works entitled “Dayaw” (2009), “Pangiyaki, I Matoy” (2007), and “Sandugo” (2016) draw inspiration from indigenous culture and experience to portray the struggles faced in the countryside and the united response of the communities to call for their rights. Besides tracing his ancestry to the indigenous Mandaya people of Davao Oriental, boyD also embodies the indigenous heritage through active participation in the plight of the indigenous people across issues that encompass the environment and the right to ancestral domain.

There will be a tour in Spanish for LAKBAYAN. VOICES OF RESISTANCE FROM THE PHILIPPINES on March 30 at 4PM. Please do visit the show!

OF RESISTANCE FROM THE PHILIPPINES teilzunehmen.

Ilagan says: 'While the man didn’t say outright that they would kill me, his point was all too clear: They could'

04/01/2023

ACCOUNT OF A DEATH THREAT
By Bonifacio Ilagan, CARMMA Convenor

At around 3 p.m. of January 2, 2023, I was in an aquarium shop in Cherry Foodarama along Congressional Road in Quezon City looking for plants to put in my fish tank. By 3:14 p.m., my mobile phone rang. What registered was not a name but a number — 09655976472. I heard a man’s voice. He wanted to talk to Mr. Bonifacio Ilagan. I asked who he was. He said he was Kumander (I failed to get the complete name), and that he belonged to a unit (whose name I also was unable to remember but I recall him mentioning a “sector”).

Sensing that it was not going to be a harmless call, I said that Mr. Ilagan was not around. But the man ignored me and proceeded to talk. He said that his unit was tasked to wipe out communists and told me to desist from my activities. He said he “knew enough of me and still had some respect for me,” but he and his unit were just waiting for “the final order from the higher-ups,” and they would surely get me, and that I should not ask for mercy, it would be futile, because I had already been warned. Then, his phone went silent. He had spoken for one minute.

While the man didn’t say outright that they would kill me, his point was all too clear: They could.

In the past, I’ve received quite a few text messages that cursed and threatened me on account of my activism. This is the first time that I got a call that said much more.

Photo of Bonifacio Ilagan after he filed a blotter report at the Visayas Avenue Police Station 15 in Quezon City yesterday, January 3, 2023.

02/01/2023

“No Songs, No Struggle” is a two-part episode featuring songs from the music label Paredon Records, founded in 1969, which aimed to publish recordings of cultural expressions from around the world, especially protests, in order to preserve them.

In Part 1, we have Theodore Gonzalves, curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, sharing with us Paredon's contributions to the international anti-imperialist and antifascist movements of 70s Southeast Asia via the albums produced and disseminated by label co-founders Barabara Dane and Irwin Silber, with the help of politically active artists and progressive organizations in Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and their global support networks.

In Part 2, we'll listen to more tracks from the Philippines Bangon! Arise! album released in 1976, as well as a firsthand account of the sociopolitical conditions of artmaking during the 70s from Filipino activist and Martial Law survivor Bonifacio Ilagan. In between snippets of his interview, we’ll hear a new version of “Ang Masa” (“The Masses Are the Makers of History”) performed by members of the Cavite Cultural Alliance for Social Change. Then we have Lisa Ito, secretary-general of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP), sharing her experiences as a student journalist in the late 90s, and later as an educator-activist at the University of the Philippines and her subsequent membership with CAP. She will also comment on the ongoing sociopolitical crises following the results of the May 2022 Presidential Elections.

Finally, to express intergenerational solidarity, Dang A Dang Radio presents contemporary renditions of other select tracks from the Philippines: Bangon! Arise! album, performed by this current generation of Filipino activists and musicians:

Mara Peralta singing “Araw na Lubhang Mapanglaw” (“Day of Deep Mourning”),

Alyana Cabral performing “Luksam-pati” (“Song of Grief and Courage”) and the band The General Strike’s version of the song “Mendiola Street.”
