A pastor and his entire family were involved in a horrendous traffic accident on I-5 in Seattle. We know this family and have visited their Japanese church in Colorado in the past. Here are chilling details posted on the GoFundMe page seeking funding to help pay mounting medical bills.

Yoichi "Forest" and Tomo Mori founded the Japanese Hope Family Mountain Family church which is currently located in Centennial, Colorado in 2009 (www.jhmfc.org).

During Labor Day weekend, the Mori family flew to Washington to assist with the services at Lynnwood Japanese Family Church in Edmonds, WA (www.ljfamily.org). In the early morning of September 4, 2023, the Mori family was driving to the airport in Seattle, Washington, when a drunk/drugged driver drove the wrong way on interstate I-5 and collided with the Mori’s car head on. All five family members were transported to hospital intensive care units (ICU) throughout Seattle. Please help support the family with the significant medical bills. Please also pray for their recovery from injuries and safe travel back to Denver when they are able.

The following is an update on the condition of each of the family members:

Kishin: The youngest of the family and a sophomore in high school at Denver Christian High School, is the most injured. He went into immediate surgery to repair his stomach, intestines, and lung. In addition he has a broken leg and broken shoulder.

Tomo: The mother, is the next most significantly injured. She also went into immediate surgery for internal damage to her intestines. She also has damage to her spinal cord, which will be assessed soon.

Inori: A nursing student at Colorado Christian University, Inori sustained head injuries including a fractured nose, hematoma, several broken ribs, and damaged her tail bone. Her right ankle is also sprained, which is making it very difficult to walk.

Sambi: Is a second year student as a Doctor of Physical Therapy at Regis University. She has a fractured spine, several lacerations, and an elevated heart rate.

Yoichi (Forest): The father, has injuries to his back and head, but his CT scan came back ok. He is mentally shaken and is obviously distressed about the rest of his family. He most likely has whiplash and will be under observation for the next few days to make sure he is ok.

The first job I ever had was that of being a paperboy for the Tacoma News Tribune (TNT). I was twelve when the TNT District Manager, Lawrence Merkle stopped by my friend’s TNT bundle pickup corner and asked if I was interested in having a paper route. I asked my parents and soon after I became the delivery boy for route 20412. I think I probably delivered papers for almost four years, until graduating from high school in 1966. Since Mr. Merkle was the manager of the district where I delivered papers, I suppose he was my first “boss.”

I was supposed to go to Alaska the summer of 1966 right after graduating, but I just felt it would be better to get a job doing something more locally. Mr. Merkle happened by and mentioned that the TNT was looking for help in their office in downtown Tacoma at 711 St. Helens Street. I went for the interview and was hired right away. My boss then was Mr. Lyle Helander. When he retired, the boss changed to John Quinn. The 711 St Helen’s Ave facility was moved to a brand new newspaper printing-publishing plant out at So. 19th and State St. in Tacoma. I ended up working in the Circulation Department, or what is otherwise known as Customer Service of the TNT for the next eleven years.

When the TNT moved its location, my boss changed again. However, this time my boss became none other than Mr. Merkle. He had remained a faithful District Manager to hundreds of young boys who were starting out their first employment careers, but now he was my boss in the company and not the paper route business.

He was a soft spoken gentlemen and dressed dapperly. There were times I was quite surprised to see him refereeing a local high school basketball game, another time a football game, then yet another time a baseball game. He was a famous referee and loved sports.

As I worked my way up the ladder of seniority in the Circulation Dept. Nite Crew, I took on a bad habit, the habit of often being a few minutes late for work. One day after arriving for work almost ten minutes late and sneaking in quietly to my desk, Mr. Merkle had his secretary call me into his office.

He said in his gentle voice, “Nils, I’ve been watching you for quite some time and notice that you’re late more than on-time when it comes to your job. Let me ask you a question: are you ever late for church?”

I answered quickly and honestly, “Oh, no. I’m never late for church; many times I get there ahead of time.”

This time he looked at me with a very, very serious face and said, “Your work here is more important than church. You can go home now and think about that; we don’t need you this afternoon.”

Here I am now 75 and this episode is still etched in my memory. It’s a good memory of my first boss and the lesson he taught me about being responsible

I created this page in hopes to reconnect to those with whom I worked from 1966 to 1977 at the Tacoma News Tribune at 711 St. Helens Ave. in downtown Tacoma and then in the new plant at 1950 South State Street, which is no longer.

If any of you still are in touch with or know the whereabouts of people like Don PITZER, Phil or Bob CORBIN, Bob or Sally COYNE, Bob GEIGER, Darrow SCHIESEL, John CARMEN, Jerry LIND, Paul BENSON, Bruce NELSON, John O’MALLEY or any former District Managers who may still be living, please contact them and ask if they might be interested in joining this page.

We all have a story from those early days; we all have memories; we may all have some sort of old photo of the memories from when we worked at the TNT. There were no such things as cell phones back then, so if you have an old photo, please scan it and upload it to the site. ⏤cover photo by Joe Mabel
