SeaWorld Abu Dhabi has officially turned one year old, after being open for a whole year.

Spanning 183,000 sq m over five floors and eight “realms”, there are more than 100,000 marine animals inside, including 150 species of birds, fish, mammals and reptiles. In fact, SeaWorld Yas Island is officially the Largest Indoor Marine-Life Theme Park in the world, according to the Guinness World Records.

Of these, 68,000 animals can be found in the Endless Ocean realm’s aquarium, which is the world’s largest and most expansive multi-species aquarium.
Other realms include the Abu Dhabi ocean, which will highlight animals native to the region and the UAE’s seafaring past; the polar ocean, which covers both Antarctica and the Arctic; and the tropical ocean, which has dolphins, flamingos and tropical birds.

The microocean realm will explore the role of the ocean’s smallest marine life, and rocky point will feature a hidden cost with nesting sea lions. From the one ocean realm, you will get a glimpse into the Animal Care Center, and the area serves as the entranceway into the other seven realms.

Across the realms, there are also 15 rides and experiences such as the Manta Coaster or the Hypersphere 360.
SeaWorld is located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. There is free parking outside of the park, as well as a valet parking service.

07/05/2024

Miral, renowned for crafting immersive destinations and experiences in Abu Dhabi, unveiled staggering visitation figures for 2023, marking a remarkable surge in visits across Yas Island and Saadiyat Island and establishing a new standard. Announced at the Arabian Travel Market 2024, Yas Island boasted over 34 million visits, reflecting a 38% increase from 2022’s 24.9 million. Likewise, Saadiyat Island experienced a 44% growth in visitation compared to 2022.

Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi, Group CEO of Miral, said, “These record-breaking figures reiterate our commitment to positioning Yas Island as a global destination for entertainment and leisure, and Saadiyat Island as a leading beach, nature, and cultural destination. Aligned with Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030, our goal is to deliver new leisure, entertainment, and cultural destinations and experiences that enhance visitor experiences while generating sustainable value and contributing significantly to Abu Dhabi’s tourism growth and economic diversification.”

In 2023, the theme parks and CLYMB on Yas Island experienced an impressive 83% increase in visitation compared to the previous year. Notably, visits from the GCC region surged by an astounding 125%, while international visits to the island’s theme parks rose by a substantial 167%, driven mainly by tourists from India, the UK, Russia, and Germany.

Yas Island also witnessed remarkable growth in consumer events, surpassing attendance expectations by an impressive 87%. Over 560 thousand attendees flocked to enjoy a myriad of world-class concerts, performances, family, and sports events, including popular acts like Lion King, UFC, NBA, Disney on Ice, Kevin Hart, Black Pink, the Backstreet Boys, and Amr Diab.

Moreover, Yas Island welcomed 23 MICE Groups in 2023, marking a significant 77% increase from the previous year, with a related spending surge of 62%. This success was largely attributed to Miral’s collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Convention & Exhibition Bureau, resulting in the creation of the Abu Dhabi Convention & Exhibition Bureau and Miral Joint Business Event Fund, aimed at enhancing Abu Dhabi’s status as a prominent MICE destination.

During the summer of 2023, Yas Island witnessed a notable 96% surge in visitation to its theme parks in July and August compared to 2022. Additionally, hotels on the island experienced substantial growth, boasting a 90% occupancy rate from June to August.

Exciting developments are underway on Yas Island, including the expansion of Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi by 16,900 sqm, featuring an impressive 3.3 kilometers of new slide sections set to be completed by 2025. Furthermore, the highly anticipated Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park at Warner Bros. World™ Yas Island is in the works. Other projects include the development of Yas Bay Beach, a 560-meter beachfront addition enhancing leisure and lifestyle experiences at Yas Bay Waterfront.

On Saadiyat Island, in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), upcoming attractions include teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, a multi-sensory art experience at Saadiyat Cultural District, and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, expected to be the largest of its kind in the region.

Both Yas Island and Saadiyat Island received over 170 regional and international accolades in 2023, with Yas Island garnering 130 awards and Saadiyat Island receiving over 40 awards across the travel and tourism sector, recognizing their exceptional attractions, experiences, and contributions to the industry.

Miral’s portfolio continues to drive significant economic growth in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s new Tourism Strategy 2030. Launched in April 2024, the strategy aims to attract 39.3 million visitors, create 178,000 new jobs, and increase the tourism sector’s contribution to the UAE’s GDP to AED 90 billion annually by 2030.

With an average of 1,052 days of sun each year (we guesstimated, don’t look it up), Abu Dhabi has always been a strong pull for beach seekers around the world. There’s also the fact that Abu Dhabi itself is made up of sandy islands, meaning — ratios, there’s more surface area shoreline to top up that tan than your average beach destination. And there are some spectacular public beaches dotted across the many coastal areas of our emirate, but some of our favourites include: Saadiyat Island public beach, there really is no stretch of shimmering sand in the UAE quite like it, rugged dunes, native turtles and dolphins, turquoise waters, and wave swells — it really is a straight 10; Corniche beach is super convenient for Downtown dwellers, and packed with family friendly activities as well as a smorgasbord of dining options; Al Bateen beach is nearly 1km stretch of blue flag sandy lushness, there’s a playground and several sport courts to keep you and the little ones entertained too; finally, the newcomer — Hudayriyat public beach, in addition to the forever-blue horizon, highly Insta-appropriate Hudayriyat sign, and gym equipment — you have the island’s whole world of leisure, dining, and entertainment facilities within walking distance.

Life of Pi is set to dazzle UAE audiences at Etihad Arena, Yas Island for a limited season from 15-17 November 2024.

Proactiv Entertainment has partnered up with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Miral, the leading creator of immersive destinations and experiences in Abu Dhabi to bring to the UAE’s capital Life of Pi from the West End by Simon Friend Entertainment – the very first international play to ever come to Abu Dhabi.

Based on the novel that sold more than 15 million copies and became a worldwide phenomenon, Life of Pi is an epic story of perseverance and hope that speaks to every generation and “gives new life to Broadway” (The Today Show). The groundbreaking story was also adapted to a movie, which won four Oscar Awards.

After a shipwreck in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a sixteen-year-old boy named Pi survives on a lifeboat with four companions— a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a Royal Bengal tiger. Told with jaw-dropping visuals, world class puppetry and exquisite stagecraft, Life of Pi creates a breathtaking journey that will leave you filled with awe and joy.

Nicolas Renna, CEO at Proactiv Entertainment, said: “We are beyond thrilled to bring to Abu Dhabi such a unique play after its international success in the West End and Broadway. The production represents the pinnacle of theatrical excellence, combining innovative stagecraft with a deeply moving story that audiences know and adore. Many people may have read the book or watched the movie – but experiencing this epic tale live on stage is something you do not want to miss out on.”

09/04/2024

The 10th edition of the annual Asia Golf Tourism Convention has taken place in Abu Dhabi, attracting 340 delegates from 52 countries and making it the most international Asian convention since the event’s inauguration in 2012.

Peter Walton, Chief Executive of IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators), said: “Taking AGTC to Abu Dhabi this year enabled us to bring the broadest representation of golf tour operators selling Asia, Australasia and the Gulf States to the convention in its 10-year history. The attending golf tour operators were almost equally split between Asia and Australasia (51%) and Europe and North America (49%), enabling the participating golf destinations and golf tourism suppliers to reach many new markets and potential clients.

“In addition to a record turn-out from golf resorts, golf courses and hotels in the United Arab Emirates and neighbouring Gulf States – including Oman, Jordan and Saudi Arabia – tour operators met with leading golf tourism suppliers from across Southeast Asia, China, Japan, India, Mauritius, Australia and guest destinations from Europe and North Africa.

“IAGTO golf tour operators are responsible for more than 90% of golf vacation packages sold worldwide, and by showcasing Abu Dhabi to 146 golf tour operator delegates from 34 countries, this event, along with the pre- and post-educational tours, will generate sustainable high-revenue business from both new and established markets for Abu Dhabi and the region for many years to come.”

The event, which was held from 20-22 March at the Hilton Convention Centre on Yas Island, was also an opportunity for IAGTO to showcase Abu Dhabi as a golf destination during the month of Ramadan, which was very well received. Delegates experienced desert safaris and the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum alongside fantastic gastronomy on Yas Island’s waterfront.

Jason Momoa is Yas Island Abu Dhabi’s newest chief island officer.

The Hollywood star assumes the role after comedian Kevin Hart announced he was stepping down earlier this year. Hart first took on the role in May last year.

“We are pleased to appoint Hollywood sensation Jason Momoa as the new chief island officer for Yas Island Abu Dhabi,” said Liam Findlay, chief executive of Miral Destinations. "We received resounding feedback following Kevin Hart's farewell campaign and we are excited to deliver yet another successful storyline for fans to follow.

“As Yas Island Abu Dhabi continues to entertain guests with best-in-class experiences and with offerings that resonate with visitors from all over the world, we look forward to raising the bar even higher in the days to come with Jason Momoa as the island’s newest officer.”
A new teaser video shows the Aquaman star stand-up paddle boarding towards Yas Island with the W Abu Dhabi — Yas Island lit up behind him. He is also shown enjoying some of its main attractions such as Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World and Yas Marina Circuit.

“There comes a time when you discover your calling, when you realise your destiny and you know your whole life has led to this one ridiculously awesome job," he says in the video. "They made me chief island officer of Yas Island Abu Dhabi so now I’m making sure everyone lives it up like me … Jason Momoa.”

05/04/2024

When it comes to getting noticed, few places do it with as much aplomb as Abu Dhabi. When Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning made its debut less than a year ago, millions of cinemagoers around the world got a taste of what the UAE capital had to offer, not least the brand-new terminal at its main international airport that was the backdrop to the film’s high-octane tale of international espionage. In a similar vein, the futuristic dystopia of the Dune sci-fi blockbusters has brought the emirate’s majestic Empty Quarter to a global audience. The emirate’s commitment to high-profile Hollywood projects such as these speaks volumes about its visibility and connection with the rest of the world.

That enthusiasm for developing Abu Dhabi as a travel destination received an important boost this week with news of a $10 billion investment in the emirate’s infrastructure that’s intended to support its 2030 tourism strategy, which includes ambitious goals to boost visitor numbers to 39.3 million and increase the sector's GDP contribution to Dh90 billion ($24.5 billion) within six years. But those who will get the most from these developments are not the visitors who come and go – it will be the people who live and work here.
This ambitious investment plan does not just involve the tourism sector – it is a collaboration involving government departments responsible for culture, economic development, municipal services and transportation, among others. That means, as the tourism strategy states, enhancing Abu Dhabi’s roads, public transport and infrastructure. Improved connectivity and services are good news for citizens and residents, as is the positive effect of creating nearly 180,000 jobs.

The $10 billion investment will also contribute to Abu Dhabi’s continuing work in transforming perceptions of Gulf travel from one dominated by glitz and glamour to one that is also culturally enriching, sustainable and – importantly – affordable.

04/04/2024

His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has approved the new Tourism Strategy 2030 for the emirate. Spearheaded by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the ambitious blueprint signals a new era of expansion and strategic development in the travel and tourism sector.
The Strategy seeks to boost visitor numbers from nearly 24 million in 2023 to 39.3 million by 2030 (overnight and same-day), with a 7% year-on-year growth. Moreover, it plans to significantly elevate the tourism and travel sector’s contribution to the UAE’s GDP, raising it from approximately AED 49 billion in 2023 to AED 90 billion annually by 2030.

The Strategy will generate an estimated 178,000 new jobs by 2030 as the entire tourism infrastructure develops to meet this demand. It intends to almost double international overnight visitors from 3.8 million in 2023 approximately to 7.2 million in 2030, expand hotel room availability from 34,000 in 2023 to 52,000 by 2030, and further enhance the holiday home segment to diversify accommodation options.

H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “The Tourism Strategy 2030 marks a pivotal moment in Abu Dhabi’s transformative journey, representing a vital lever in our ongoing evolution. Delivered alongside our key partners, the Strategy underscores our steadfast commitment to fostering sustainable growth and strategic development in the travel and tourism sector. Through carefully crafted initiatives that will unlock economic opportunities, amplify our distinctive culture and enhance the emirate’s value proposition, we are laying the foundation for a vibrant and prosperous future that transcends generations.”

For a taste of Italy on Easter, head to this gorgeous Yas Marina spot. More of an all-day dining scene than brunch, you can find four curated plates for the Easter, in addition to its popular à la carte menu inspired by culinary classics from Harry’s Bar in Venice. So expect to dig into homemade veal ravioli ‘alla Piemontese’, roasted baby lamb shoulder with ssh potatoes ‘Colomba Pasquale’ and much more.

On Saturday March 30, the popular Saturday Brunch at W Abu Dhabi restaurant will turn into an unforgettable Easter-themed afternoon. And we mean that. Because where else can you celebrate Easter in Abu Dhabi where you get to dig into an incredible spread from five culinary hubs and fill your glasses from 11 beverage taps. Be prepared to shake a leg to DJ Firas’ top tunes as you enjoy the afternoon, complete with chocolate treats, Easter-themed beverages, and a not-so-traditional Easter egg hunt. We’re curious.

Dhs320 (soft package), Dhs420 (house beverages), Dhs589 (sparkling package). Sat Mar 30, 1pm-4pm, W Abu Dhabi, Yas Island
