History was made as standouts in the women’s basketball and men’s volleyball were recognized for the first time ever in the 2024 Collegiate Press Corps Awards Night presented by San Miguel Corporation on Monday at the Discovery Suites Manila in Pasig.

Kent Pastrana of the University of Santo Tomas was hailed as the inaugural Collegiate Women’s Basketball Player of the Year to headline a total of 23 awardees alongside Collegiate Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Kevin Quiambao of La Salle.

Pastrana steered the Growling Tigresses to their first title in 17 years, toppling the mighty dynasty of seven-peat champion National U with a thrilling three-game series win to win the UAAP Season 86 finals.

She’s also named the UAAP Player of the Year for team events in the league’s closing ceremony last year before a fitting follow-up recognition from the CPC in the momentous ceremony also backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.

Pastrana also led the breakthrough Women’s Mythical Five with her teammate and UAAP Finals MVP Tantoy Ferrer, FEU's Josee Kaputu, UP’s Favour Onoh, and Kacey dela Rosa of Ateneo while Quiambao, who lifted La Salle to the UAAP Season 86 title to snap a seven-year drought, bannered the staple Men’s Mythical Five with Rookie-MVP Clint Escamis of Mapua, UP’s Malick Diouf, Lyceum’s Enoch Valdez and Jacob Cortez of San Beda.

“It’s our honor to be given this kind of opportunity sa women’s basketball. Thank you for this award at sa walang pag-suporta sa amin,” said Pastrana.

For the first time also, achievers in the men’s volleyball were feted with well-deserved honors led by UAAP Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year Owa Retamar of NU and NCAA Men's Volleyball Player of the Year Louie Ramirez of Perpetual.

Retamar pocketed the UAAP Season 86 Finals MVP and Best Setter while Ramirez captured the NCAA Season 99 MVP plum anew as the both the Bulldogs and the Altas won four straight titles.

“Sobrang saya po na ako ‘yung napili para dito sa men’s volleyball award. Masaya ako para sa men’s volleyball na unti-unti nang nakilala syempre sa tulong ng media. Sila ‘yung tumulong na magpalawak nito. Sana tuloy-tuloy para sa lahat ng kabataan na nanonood samin. Sana ma-inspire sila,” said Retamar.

But the night didn’t only belong to the players as mentors from women’s basketball and volleyball also marked history and grand celebration.

Haydee Ong of UST copped the UAAP Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year with Dante Alinsunurin of NU and Sammy Acaylar of Perpetual winning the UAAP Men’s Volleyball and NCAA Men’s Volleyball Coaches of the Year awards, respectively.

NU’s Norman Miguel and Jerry Yee of three-peat champion College of St. Benilde’s were named the UAAP Women’s Volleyball and NCAA Women’s Volleyball Coaches of the Year, respectively.

“It’s the first time in history that you’ve given accolades and inclusivity for women’s basketball. Maraming Salamat po. This award will not be possible without the help of the whole community and ecosystem of UST,” said Ong.

Also in the spotlight of the event supported by Discovery Suites as official venue partner, Jockey, Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup and Virgil Villavicencio as supporters, were the winners of the staple awards in men’s basketball and women’s volleyball

For the second time, MVP Bella Belen of NU took home the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year while Cloanne Mondonedo of CSB, the first setter MVP in NCAA history, won the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year.

La Salle champion mentor Topex Robinson was named the UAAP Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year while Yuri Escueta, who engineered San Beda’s NCAA title run, was hailed as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

The stage is set as the Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) honors the brightest athletes and best coaches of the 2023-2024 athletic season in its Annual Awards Night presented by San Miguel Corporation on Monday at the Discovery Suites Manila in Ortigas, Pasig City.

This year’s awards night will recognize the stellar student-athletes of UAAP Season 86 and NCAA Season 99 with Collegiate Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Kevin Quiambao of La Salle headlining a total of 23 awardees.

Quiambao, the UAAP Season 86 MVP and Finals MVP, steered the Green Archers the to the UAAP men’s basketball throne to snap a seven-year title drought following a thrilling three-game series win against the University of the Philippines.

Joining him is Kent Pastrana of the University of Santo Tomas as the inaugural recipient of the Collegiate Women’s Basketball Player of the Year in the ceremony also backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.

Pastrana, who was also named the Player of the Year for team events by the UAAP in the Season 86 closing ceremony, played a vital role in the Growling Tigresses’ stunning upset of seven-peat champion National U to end a 17-year title futility.

With Quiambao in the Men’s Mythical Five are NCAA are Rookie-MVP Clint Escamis of Mapua, UP’s Malick Diouf, Lyceum’s Enoch Valdez and Jacob Cortez of San Beda.

For the first time, the CPC will also have a Women’s Mythical Five including Pastrana and teammate Finals MVP Tantoy Ferrer, Far Eastern University’s Josee Kaputu, UP’s Favour Onoh, and Kacey dela Rosa of Ateneo.

In just his first year as head coach, Topex Robinson was successful in calling the shots for La Salle en route to the UAAP Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year honor while San Beda mentor Yuri Escueta is the NCAA counterpart after the Red Lions’ Season 99 championship win against Mapua.

Longtime UST coach Haydee Ong engineered the Growling Tigresses to topple the NU dynasty, making her the first-ever UAAP Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in the event supported by Discovery Suites as official venue partner and Jockey as minor sponsor.

Leading the Lady Bulldogs to their second women’s volleyball championship in three years, the charismatic two-time league MVP Bella Belen earned her second UAAP Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year as graduating MVP setter Cloanne Mondonedo anchored College of St. Benilde to its third consecutive championship for the NCAA women’s Volleyball Player of the Year plum.

The CPC will also award the first-ever Men’s Volleyball Players of the Year to NU setter Owa Retamar from the UAAP and Perpetual spiker Louie Ramirez from the NCAA.

Both players led NU and Perpetual to four-peat championship feats.

With the rising popularity of volleyball, the outstanding coaches of the sport will also be feted by the CPC for the first time with NU mentors sweeping the UAAP Volleyball Coaches of the Year citations: the returning Norman Miguel and the seasoned Dante Alinsunurin.

Also on spotlight are Perpetual coach Sammy Acaylar and Lady Blazers coach Jerry Yee as NCAA Coaches of the Year as both squads extended their dynasty in collegiate volleyball.

Six of the UAAP and NCAA’s standout stars will be recognized as the athletic season’s cream of the crop in the Collegiate Press Corps’ (CPC) Annual Awards Night presented by San Miguel Corporation on June 17 at the Discovery Suites Manila in Ortigas, Pasig.

For the first time ever, the CPC will bestow its highest individual honor to the best aces of women’s basketball and men’s volleyball as college scribes fete the continuous ascent of both sports in the ceremony also backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.

As the central figures of two monumental title runs, La Salle’s Kevin Quiambao will be hailed as the UAAP Men’s Basketball Player of the Year following a hat-trick of golden honors as Season 86 MVP, Finals MVP and first-time champion to end the Green Archers’ seven-year championship drought.

University of Santo Tomas’ Kent Pastrana will take the sole distinction as the inaugural UAAP Women’s Basketball POTY upon seizing España’s first hoops crown in nearly two decades and ending National University’s dynastic seven-year reign.

Highlighting volleyball’s steady rise are this year’s title-winning quartet of hard-hitters and playmakers in both collegiate leagues.

Outside spikers Bella Belen of National University and Louie Ramirez will be hailed as the UAAP Women’s Volleyball POTY and the CPC’s first-ever NCAA Men’s Volleyball POTY, respectively.

Belen’s ever-reliable offense and newfound defensive prowess made her only the UAAP’s fifth multiple-time women’s volleyball MVP as Ramirez’s two-year run of on-court dominance earned him his second straight NCAA MVP nod.

Champion setters will also have their share of the limelight in the second straight in the second endeavor of the united CPC, which merged the UAAP and NCAA Press Corps upon the return of all collegiate sports in 2022, with support from Discovery Suites as official venue partner and Jockey as minor sponsor.

National University’s Joshua Retamar is to be named the UAAP Men’s Volleyball POTY to join Ramirez in the historic men's volleyball awardees and College of St. Benilde’s Cloanne Mondoñedo as the NCAA Women’s Volleyball POTY.

In his final act for the Bulldogs, Retamar orchestrated NU’s four-peat title run to perfection on top of back-to-back Finals MVP plums and Best Setter honors before embarking on national team duties for Alas Pilipinas just weeks after a fairytale finish to his college career.

Mondoñedo, meanwhile, blazed her own trail of history in women’s volleyball as the first NCAA setter in recorded history to win MVP en route to Benilde’s third unbeaten championship campaign with 40 straight wins and counting.

La Salle’s Kevin Quiambao and UST’s Kent Pastrana banner the two Mythical Teams to be honored in the Collegiate Press Corps Awards Night presented by San Miguel Corporation on June 17 at the Discovery Suites Manila in Ortigas, Pasig.

The 5-foot-7 Pastrana powered the Golden Tigresses to their first basketball title in 17 years to headline the first-ever Women’s Basketball Mythical Team in the annual collegiate rites also backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.

She proved as a steady force on the offensive end as the ace guard led the Growling Tigresses past the dynasty that were the NU Lady Bulldogs and their seven-year reign in three thrilling games in the finals.

Pastrana was also named the UAAP Season 86 Player of the Year for Team Events by the league on top of making it to the UAAP Season 86 Mythical Five.

For the CPC’s historic award supported by the Discovery Suites as official venue partner and Jockey as minor sponsor, Pastrana will be joined her teammate and Season 86 Finals MVP Tantoy Ferrer, FEU Lady Tamaraws’ Josee Kaputu, Rookie of the Year in UP Fighting Maroons' Favour Onoh, and Season MVP in Ateneo's Kacey Dela Rosa.

Quiambao, for his part, clinched a golden double by becoming the UAAP Season MVP and Finals MVP to undisputedly lead the Mythical Team in the men’s side featuring the best ballers from the UAAP Season 86 and NCAA Season 99.

The 6-foot-7 forward led the Green Archers to a dry spell-busting championship against the UP Fighting Maroons, also in three games, to take the Green Archers to their first title since 2016.

Mapua's Clint Escamis, the NCAA Season 99 Rookie of the Year-MVP, UP'S Malick Diouf, Lyceum's Enoch Valdez, and former San Beda Red Lion Jacob Cortez complete the CPC Men's Basketball Mythical Team.

The Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) will honor seven of the best coaches in the collegiate level, led by mentors in volleyball and women’s basketball for the first time, when it stages its annual Awards Night presented by San Miguel Corporation at Discovery Suites Manila in Ortigas on June 17.

The CPC added five more recipients of the prestigious Coach of the Year Awards following the UAAP Season 86 and NCAA Season 99 to join the group’s list of staple recognitions headlined by mentors from men’s basketball.

Haydee Ong of the University of Santo Tomas will be hailed as the UAAP Women’s Basketball COTY after steering the Growling Tigresses to their first UAAP title in 17 years, ending the seven-peat reign of no less than the National University Lady Bulldogs.

The CPC will also honor the stellar rise of volleyball coaches in both collegiate leagues for the first time in the grand ceremony backed by Discovery Suites as official venue partner and Jockey as minor sponsor.

Over at the UAAP, NU’s coach Dante Alinsunurin will be named the Men’s Volleyball COTY for winning a dynastic four-peat with the Bulldogs following a sweep of the UST Golden Spikers in the finals.

Norman Miguel, for his part, will take home the UAAP Women’s Volleyball COTY plum for bringing the Lady Bulldogs back to the promised land after missing out on the championship last year at the hands of La Salle. Miguel pushed NU back to the crown in dominant fashion, sweeping the Golden Tigresses in the process.

The NCAA had no shortage of coaching greatness as well with Sammy Acaylar of Perpetual Help winning the NCAA Men’s Volleyball COTY. Acaylar showed his mettle in the coaching post after pushing the Altas to 11-0 sweep all the way to the NCAA Season 99 crown for their fourth straight title.

Jerry Yee, on the other hand, will be the NCAA Women’s Volleyball COTY for authoring the College of St. Benilde’s three-peat, highlighted by a 40-and-counting wins in a row.

In the traditional side of the awards, Topex Robinson will be feted with the UAAP Men’s Basketball COTY after steering La Salle to the Season 86 title at the expense of the University of the Philippines to snap a seven-year drought.

Yuri Escueta, meanwhile, will be the NCAA Men’s Basketball COTY after guiding San Beda to the Season 99 chip against all odds. Escueta and the Red Lions made the unthinkable by winning the whole tourney despite being the underdogs as the third seed, especially against Mapua in the finale.

The brightest stars from the 2023-2024 athletic season will be recognized anew as the Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) holds its Annual Awards Night presented by San Miguel Corporation on June 17 at the Discovery Suites Manila in Ortigas, Pasig.

Unlike the 2023 edition which feted three seasons in one due to the COVID-19 pandemic though, this year’s ceremony will only focus on the achievers of the recently-concluded UAAP Season 86 and NCAA Season 99.

For the first time ever, standouts in women’s basketball and men’s volleyball will be feted with well-deserved recognitions in the second endeavor of the united CPC, which merged the UAAP and NCAA Press Corps upon the return of all collegiate sports in 2022.

Among the new awards by the CPC are Player of the Year, Mythical Five and Coach of the Year on the distaff side as the group puts premium on the rise of women’s hoops for this year’s rites backed by Discovery Suites as official venue partner and Jockey as minor sponsor.

Volleyball, which saw a phenomenal uptick in gate attendance over the past few months, will also see new honors such as the Men's Volleyball Players of the Year, both from the UAAP and the NCAA.

Volleyball Coaches of the Year, likewise, in both the men’s and women’s divisions from the country’s premier collegiate leagues will be named.

A total of 23 awards are to be handed out by the print and online scribes covering the beat, led by the staple honors such as the Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Mythical Five.

Also in the fray are the Men’s Basketball Coaches of the Year and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year plums, which were introduced last season as one of the new CPC awards before the inclusion of men's volleyball and women's basketball this time around.
