The High Court has upheld the death sentences for 20 people and life imprisonment for five others in the 2019 murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad.

The bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the verdict on Sunday after reviewing the death references and appeals from the defendants.

On the night of Oct 6, 2019, BUET’s second-year student Abrar was tortured to death at the Sher-e-Bangla Hall by leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student affiliate of the Awami League. The incident sparked outrage across the university, leading to a campus-wide ban on student politics.

Following the incident, Abrar's father filed a murder case at Chawkbazar Police Station in Dhaka.

The high-profile case went to trial on Sept 15, 2020, after formal charges were framed. Following arguments from both sides, the trial court delivered a verdict on Dec 8, 2021, sentencing 20 people to death and five others to life imprisonment.

Allegations of r**e have surfaced against a 45-year-old local man who allegedly r**ed two 6-year-old children after luring them with food in Bogura's Kahaloo, amid a rise in such sexual violence against children and women across the country in recent weeks.

Both children have been admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZRMCH) in Bogura town, according to local sources and police. One of the children is suffering from haemorrhaging while the other has a high fever.

The accused, identified as Nuru Islam from Kahaloo's Paikar Union, has been absconding since the incident.

The government has disbursed Tk2,000 crore in cash incentives for export-oriented industries to support workers' monthly wages and bonus payments ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, according to sources.

Of this, Tk1,000 crore was released today (13 March), and the rest was disbursed on 5 March.

The Finance Division move follows an appeal from Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) President Mohammad Hatem earlier in this month to ensure timely payments to workers before Eid vacations.

The government has also directed banks not to adjust previous loan repayments with these funds, as this incentive is specifically to address the current wage payment situation for the industry workers.

This decision follows three separate meetings held at the Chief Adviser's Office and the Secretariat.

A senior official of the Labour Ministry, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "The meetings decided to ask banks not to adjust loans with the cash incentives. This time, the first priority will be to pay employees' wages, and only then can loans be adjusted."

The cash incentives represent the third and fourth installments of the export incentive allocated for the current financial year, 2024-25, for export sectors.
