🥊 Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott punch it out for the worlds heavyweight championship held by Louis who was making the 24th defence on 5/12/1947 at the Madison square gardens. A 10-1 betting favourite the ‘brown bomber’ found himself on the canvas in rounds 1 and round 4 before going on to win a SD victory after 15rds of boxing. In a ringside poll of 32 writers,21 would call the fight in favour of Walcott,10 in favour of Louis and 1 calling it a draw. Louis who was so disgusted with his performance tried to immediately leave the ring yet was restrained by his handlers. 6 months later and the two would meet again….Louis again found himself on the canvas this time in the third rd before going on to knock Walcott out for the count in round 11. Louis would retire after the bout and personally hand picked Walcott and Ezzard Charles to contest the title he had now relinquished. Charles would win a UD over Walcott for said title. Louis after a short retirement would come back to boxing and challenge for the title held by Charles…he would lose a UD after 15rds and would never again challenge for boxing’s biggest honour. Walcott on the other hand would eventually go on to lift the heavyweight crown in his fifth attempt when he ironed out his former conquerer Ezzard Charles with a recasting one punch knockout at age 37. He would later lose the title at the hands of Rocky Marciano himself to Rockys devastating one punch knock out right hand ‘Suzy Q’. 🥊
