Breaking News:

The ECOWAS Parliament has decisively rejected a proposal for the regional body to play a significant role in establishing a special tribunal for The Gambia.

Despite compelling arguments from the five Gambian lawmakers in support of the proposal, the majority of parliamentarians contended that ECOWAS could not serve both as a referee and a player, as its impartiality would be compromised in the event of any issues in The Gambia.

The Gambian lawmakers emphasized that the people of The Gambia need and deserve justice after years of crimes and atrocities, urging ECOWAS to aid in the process.

However, opposing parliamentarians argued that The Gambia could establish its own court through its constitutional and legal processes, and that ECOWAS should not be involved.

Two lawmakers from Liberia, Taa Wongbe and Edwin Snowe, spoke in agreement with the majority decision.

Mano River Youth Parliament Speaker Recommends Salary Increments and Lodging Facilities for Teachers

At the close of the Liberian Students Union Election in Sinje Town, Cape Mount, Mano River Youth Parliament Speaker Daniel Nills recommended salary increments and improved lodging facilities for teachers in Cape Mount and Liberia.

Nills highlighted the sacrifices made by teachers in rural Liberia to enhance the education system and stressed the need for the government to provide incentives and better living conditions for them.

The speaker pointed out that insufficient government attention is leading to numerous gaps in schools nationwide, with current teacher salaries falling short of meeting their basic needs.

He noted that these salaries are also used by teachers across the country to cover rent and support their families in Monrovia.

Nills called for the implementation of professional development programs for rural teachers and the introduction of technology initiatives in schools across Liberia.

He commended the leadership of the Liberian National Students Union for the successful election and urged the elected members to positively impact the student community in Grand Cape Mount county.

Expressing admiration for the enthusiasm displayed by the newly elected student representatives, Nills promised to collaborate with them to strengthen the student community in the region.

Meanwhile those elected leaders include:
1. Grace Weah ..... President-elect Representing St. John Episcopal High School (S. J. E. H. S)

2. Massa P. Kamara ..... Vice president Representing Sinje Public High School (S.P.H.S)

3. Moses J. Kamara .... Secretary-General Representing Sinje Public High School (S.P.H.S)

4. Aaron B. Togbah .... Financial Secretary Representing First Assembly of God Mission High School (A.G.M)

Assistant Magistrate Momo Saah Halts Orange Liberia's 4G Community Mobile Network Installation

Assistant Magistrate Momo Saah of the Kongo Magisterial Court in Kongo Town, Mano River Kongo Township, issued a 'stay order' on Orange Liberia after the Mobile Network Company erected a 4G Community Mobile Network Tower in the town.

Magistrate Saah's decision was based on the belief that the location where Orange Liberia placed the tower belongs to the Liberian Government's Judicial Branch, making it illegal for a private company to occupy that space.

While some residents of Kongo Town welcomed Orange Liberia's presence as a much-needed improvement in communication infrastructure, others were disappointed by the 'stay order.'

This led to protests on Friday, where community members expressed their dissatisfaction with Magistrate Saah's actions.

In response to the situation, a committee has been established to review the matter and provide guidance on how to move forward in resolving the dispute over the tower's installation.

The Offices of the County Superintendents of Cape Mount, have made an arrest in the alleged drug trafficking case.

The suspect, identified as Blessing, was apprehended along the Robertsport Road.

The arrest was made following intelligence gathered by the County Leadership about suspicious motorcycles heading towards Robertsport with the intention of selling drugs.

In response to this information, a team was assembled along the City Road while the LDEA Commander of the City was contacted.

The team successfully apprehended the suspect along with the motorcycles. A substance, believed to be a sample of kush drugs, was found in Blessing's possession, according to County Financial Officer Manjah Andrew Samuel Massaley.

However, locals have expressed concerns about the LDEA Commander's handling of the situation, deeming it to be low-key given the sensitive nature of the information provided.

Blessing is currently under the custody of the County Leadership and is expected to be handed over to the LDEA for further investigation.

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) and the Regional Maritime University (RMU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the RMU campus in Accra.

The MoU aims to enhance education, training, and research in order to promote sustainable management of marine resources.

The signing ceremony marked a significant milestone in the evolution of fisheries and maritime education, showcasing the commitment of both institutions to improving the skills and capabilities of professionals in these sectors.

This partnership builds upon a successful collaboration that began in 2018, resulting in the training and certification of 50 seafarers.
The expanded agreement signifies a continued dedication to progress and development in the industry.

Speaking on behalf of the Government of Liberia, NaFAA Director General Madam Emma Metieh Glassco emphasized the crucial role of the fisheries and maritime sectors in the economy.

She highlighted the sectors' contributions to employment, food security, and livelihoods, while addressing challenges such as overfishing, climate change, and pollution.

Under the MoU, NaFAA will nominate skilled seafarers for training at RMU, covering all associated financial expenses.

This commitment demonstrates NaFAA's investment in the future of fisheries and maritime professionals, aiming to elevate their status and enhance their contributions to the industry.

Additionally, NaFAA and RMU will collaborate to design tailored capacity-building programs to meet industry needs.

RMU Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr. reaffirmed the university's dedication to excellence in maritime education and research.

He emphasized the alignment of the MoU with RMU's strategic goals of regional cooperation and sustainable development in Africa's maritime sector.

Dr. Brooks also highlighted RMU's track record of successful partnerships and expressed optimism about the collaboration's potential to drive innovation in sustainable fisheries management.

Through this partnership, RMU will provide training in modern technical skills to seafarers and fishermen, as well as capacity-building programs for NaFAA staff.

This includes advanced training in fisheries, maritime, and modern shipping management skills, ensuring that NaFAA staff are equipped to lead and innovate within the industry.

RMU will also collaborate with NaFAA on fisheries management, research, and organizing forums to advance Liberia's fisheries sector and the West African region.

The signing ceremony underscored the importance of the partnership, symbolizing a mutual commitment to excellence, sustainability, and development.

Breaking News!

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has imposed a hefty fine of USD $300,000 each on Orange Liberia and Lonestar Cell MTN. The penalties have been levied due to the poor quality of data and voice call services provided by these telecom giants. This move by the LTA comes after numerous complaints from consumers about unreliable connectivity and substandard service.

While the fines aim to hold these companies accountable, there is growing concern among the public about whether these financial penalties will translate into tangible improvements for end users. Many affected customers wonder if the fine will result in better service quality or any direct compensation for the inconveniences they have experienced. The LTA has not yet clarified how the collected fines will be used or if there will be any direct restitution for the consumers who have suffered due to the poor service.

The Minister of Finance Development and Planning, Boima Kamara, now faces potential incarceration over contempt charge as the House of Representatives has summoned him to appear before them on Tuesday.

The Plenary has requested the Minister to provide evidence to justify why he should not be held in contempt for impeding the work of the legislative body, but again Thursday he refused to show up; something the legislative body has termed as disrespectful thereby charging him with contempt.

During Thursday’s session, the House invoked its Contempt Power as outlined in rule four, citing actions that obstruct legislative function as grounds for contempt.

According to the House’s Rules and Procedures, the Finance Minister failure to appear for the fourth time triggered him punishment for contempt which can include a fine of up to LD$5,000 or imprisonment for up to one month, or the duration of the current session of the House. The decisions made in contempt cases are not subject to appeal.

Minister Kamara, along with officials from the Liberia Revenue Authority, Internal Affairs, and Liberia Petroleum Refining Company, were invited to provide financial updates on consolidated accounts and bank balances, and validate reports from the Liberia Revenue Authority on revenue collection.

While all other parties have cooperated, the failure of the Ministry of Finance to appear has been considered contemptuous.

Breaking News:

Former Chief Justice Gloria Musu Scott has been granted compassionate leave ?

Sources within the Monrovia Central Prison have it that former Chief Justice Gloria Musu Scott received compassionate leave. She had requested this leave from the Minister of Justice to conduct an inventory of her property that had been burglarized.

According to Chapter 34.20, the regulations governing compassionate leave allow prisoners to leave their institutions for specific compassionate reasons. These reasons include visiting a close relative who is seriously ill, attending the funeral of a close relative, returning home during their own last illness, or for other compelling reasons that strongly appeal to compassion.

The Minister of Justice is responsible for formulating the rules and regulations regarding compassionate leave. These rules outline the procedures for granting leave, its duration, and the custody, transportation, and care of the prisoner during the leave. They also address the expenses associated with the leave, with provisions allowing for reimbursement to the state by the prisoner or on their behalf.

Based on these regulations, the request made by former Chief Justice Scott was approved, allowing her to temporarily leave the prison to manage the inventory at her residence in Brewerville.

It is important to note that this legal provision for compassionate leave is not exclusive to former Chief Justice Scott and can be applied to any inmate under similar circumstances.

She highlighted the importance of addressing menstruation openly to prevent girls from missing school due
to their periods.

Famata A. Balo, one of the beneficiaries of the hygienic menstrual pads, shared that she used to rely on cloth during her cycle.

Statement By His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr.,
President of The Republic of Liberia
at the Opening of the 2024 Korea - Africa Summit.
Seoul, South Korea
Tuesday, 4 June, 2024

Excellency Yoon Suk Yeol, President of the Korean Republic, esteemed fellow Heads of State and Representatives of Government, Business Leaders, Civil Society Organizations, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.

It gives me great pleasure to join you at this momentous and auspicious gathering bringing together leaders of the African continent and their South Korean counterparts in a historic summit that will potentially impact about 20% of the world's population.

It is an honor to join my colleagues in thanking the government and people of the Republic of Korea for hosting this summit and for extending to us the wonderful hospitality the Korean people are known for. The Republic of Korea has been a true friend and partner, one that we can learn from, and has so much to offer Africa in the continent's quest for a transformative future.

As we wait with bated breath about the outcome of the 2024 Korea - Africa Summit, the first of its kind, the theme of this gathering - "The Future We Make Together: Shared Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity" - must remind us that the future we want for our people and the world cannot just be hoped for or dreamed of or even guaranteed; it is one only achieved through concerted and deliberate actions.

The twin processes of globalization and technological advancement have spurred growth and economic development globally. But while they both have ushered the twenty-first century with remarkable feats of human development, such impact on the world populations, especially in Africa, has been unequal. This is why "shared growth" as part of the theme of this summit should express our collective desire that growth must come with development, prosperity must be inclusive to benefit all people, and that dividends of development should not be the exclusive preserve for a privileged few.

Shared growth and a shared future must also be pursued in tandem with Agenda 2063, the pan-African effort to promote collective prosperity, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the World Sustainable Development Goals.

Excellencies, distinguished ladies and gentlemen,

We seek an outcome from this summit that allows the application of what we have collectively been endowed with to increase prosperity and improve the livelihoods of our people. However, we must equally recognize that sustainability should undergird the drive for development. Resources are not infinite; therefore, the judicious use or exploitation of our collective natural wealth must always be considered in maintaining a sustainable earth for future generations.

This means achieving a sustainable future by accepting options or alternatives that do not leave the earth depleted but also safeguard the environment. As one of the custodians of the equatorial rainforest, Liberia intends to promote a sustainable future by leveraging this natural asset to contribute to the fight against climate change.
Excellencies, those attending this summit represent about a fifth of the world's population, and as a community, we have a critical mass in solidarity that should enable us to confront and address the challenges facing our common world. In the context of South-south cooperation, the nations gathered here have in many respects shared experiences and a common objective to improve the social and economic conditions of their populations. This summit should further foster SouthΒSouth cooperation to address mutual developmental issues in the global south. No nation can address the myriad of complex global challenges alone.

It is by standing together in solidarity that we can we bring our collective efforts to bear tackling climate change, disease, hunger, poverty, and the many problems that plague us collectively.

As we look forward to the deliberations of this first and historic Korea - Africa Summit, we must remember that the future is not guaranteed; we must determine it by deliberately taking actions that will leverage our potential to achieve common goals and foster a better future for our people, a transformed, equitable and sustainable future. We can achieve this in firm partnership with the proud people of Korea who have taught us the importance of human capital - their greatest resource - in transforming the future of any nation.

Thank you.
