The story of a Black Man in Jim Crow-era Talbot County who was executed by the state after escaping lynch mobs (twice!) for a crime he very likely did not commit. Joseph Koper, author of The Isaiah Fountain Case https://josephkoper.com/book/

Did you know in 1887, Frederick Douglass celebrated George Washington’s birthday by climbing the Great Pyramid of Giza. This picture was taken a few years after his trip and shows what a difficult feat it would have been. Here’s what Douglass had to say: “One of the first exploits a tourist is tempted to perform here is to ascend to the top of the highest Pyramid. The task is by no means an easy one, nor is it entirely free from danger… I went, with seventy years on my head, to the top of the highest Pyramid, but nothing in the world would tempt me to try the experiment again. I had two Arabs before me pulling, and two at my back pushing, but the main work I had to do myself. I did not recover from the terrible strain in less than two weeks. I paid dearly for the venture. Still, it was worth something to stand for once on such a height and above the work and the world below.”

Why did the turtle cross the road? Unsure because they don't talk, but they may (keyword *may*) need your help!

From spring through fall, you can often see turtles like these crossing the road to find a mate, build a nest or track down food or water. What's the right way to help a turtle cross a road?

🐢 Don't put yourself or others in danger. Simply pulling off the road and turning on your hazard lights may alert other drivers to slow down. Be aware of your surroundings and traffic.
🐢 Avoid Excessive Handling. While wanting to examine turtles closely is hard to resist, excessive handling can disrupt their normal behavior.
🐢 Allow Unassisted Road Crossings. If there's no oncoming traffic, let the turtle cross the road without help. Observe from a distance and avoid sudden movements that may startle it, otherwise the turtle may change direction, stop, or seek shelter within its shell.
🐢 Handle Turtles Gently. If you must pick up a turtle, gently grasp the shell edge near the mid-point of the body with two hands. Some turtles empty their bladder when lifted off the ground, so be careful not to drop it if it suddenly does.
🐢 Maintain Direction of Travel. Always move a turtle in the same direction it was traveling when you saw it. Place the turtle at least 30 feet from the road (not on the roadside), so if startled by the experience, the turtle does not get disoriented and accidentally run back into the roadway, or freeze and get run over. Turtles should always be moved across roadways in as direct a line as possible. You might be tempted to "help" the turtle by moving it to a wooded area or water body, but the correct solution is to quickly move the turtle the shortest distance possible.

Annual Wild Turkey Survey: Contribute Your Sighting Data
If you see wild turkeys between July 1 and August 31, please report them using the convenient online form below.
http://ow.ly/NGhP50JQstm

We have conducted an annual summer wild turkey survey since 1993. The primary purpose of this survey is to estimate reproductive success, but other important information can be obtained from the data. Like most wildlife species, turkeys depend on annual reproduction to add new individuals to the population. This survey, along with other sources of data, allows managers to monitor turkey populations and helps explain and predict annual or regional population changes.
