Surf therapy events are widely known around the world today. But when was the first “surf therapy” event, and what can we learn from it?
One of the first instances of surf therapy according to how defines it happened in 1986 when Ted Silverberg, Mikke Pierson, and others took blind children surfing in Malibu. “It was the greatest experience I ever had,” Ted said.

“Swimming out in the dark at Blacks Beach with 4-6 foot waves rolling in was a bit nerve-racking, but as soon as we made it past the whitewash, it was like stepping into another world,” says in our recent “How I Got the Shot” feature. “The waves were glowing this crazy blue bioluminescence, lighting up the ocean around us. It was said when the event kicked off, rows of vendor tents — a crowded beer garden and a two story scaffolding on display. It was said as everyone at the contest watched some of the region’s best surfers slash and punt airs with prize money up for grabs. And it was said during the contest’s award ceremony, where equal pay was handed out to men and women alike — something Mike was a proponent of.

“As far as emotions, it’s almost hitting me,” said. “It’s right there bubbling ... Everything comes to an end and if you don’t adapt you don’t survive and my motivation just hasn’t been there to really put in that one-hundred percent that everyone else is now.”

It’s not often you get a Final with your best friend and mentor, but then again, there’s no one I want to beat more and no one I’d rather lose to. This is probably the best day of my life.” 📸
