I will never meet colonial beauty standards. My face shape is too round, too squishy they said. My eyes squint too close together they told me. My skin complexion changes too often from ivory in the winter to a deep brown in the summer that resembles dirt they yelled. My body is too stocky and compact, way too big b***d they discerned.
I am proud I will NEVER meet colonial beauty standards because my ancestors carved me carefully by hand as they did their beautiful ivory pieces. My face is shaped so that my aunties could give me big Iñuk kisses on my cheeks and my ancestors could find me in the great beyond. My eyes squint so that I could see across the blinding snow to find my way home. My skin changes from ivory to dirt brown just as my land changes throughout the seasons. My body is stocky and compact so I can preserve energy throughout the long cold winters. Colonial beauty standards COULD NEVER.

DEVIL'S TOWER.

Devil's Tower, known in Lakota as "Mató Típila," which means "bear's lodge," or "Pte He Hota," is a solitary rock formation created by the uplift of pyroclastic material, primarily laccolith, located in the northern part of the Black Hills in northeastern Wyoming.

Devil's Tower got its name from a misinterpretation of the Lakota term in 1875 when it was translated as "Bad God's Tower." On September 24, 1906, it was declared a United States National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt, becoming the first national monument.

Its origins date back to about 65 million years ago during the formation of the Black Hills and the Rocky Mountains, and its current vertical columnar shape is the result of erosion caused by rain and wind.

The mountain rises as a solitary monolith in the Belle Fourche River valley and has always held great spiritual significance in the lives of Native populations of the Great Plains, including the Lakota, Kiowa, and Cheyenne. They would gather here every year, setting aside normal tribal rivalries and conflicts, to celebrate their Sun Dance.

According to Lakota and Kiowa oral tradition, Devil's Tower was formed from the prayers of seven Indian girls who prayed to the gods to save them from a giant bear that sought to devour them. The gods responded by raising the ground to the sky, transforming the girls into the Pleiades constellation. The deep grooves on the rock walls are said to be the marks of the giant bear's claws as it tried in vain to climb the mountain.

Today, Devil's Tower is a significant tourist attraction, drawing over 400,000 visitors annually. To preserve the surrounding area from mass tourism, Devil's Tower National Park was established. Nevertheless, it remains a place of worship for the Lakota people, who have secured a prohibition on climbing the mountain in June, a period of Native American celebrations and rituals.

𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲, 𝗗𝗮𝗸𝗼𝘁𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝟭𝟴𝟴𝟬𝘀
The Dakota nation have long been about remaining together and keeping to their roots. Generations have worked to care for one another, from keeping their farms alive, to their households up and running.
Anthropologist Ella Deloria who wrote about the Dakota people shared in 1944, "The Ultimate aim of a Dakota life, stripped of accessories, was quite simple: One must obey kinship rules; one must be a good relative. No Dakota who has participated in that life will dispute that.
