When Tamim Iqbal showed no respect to Indian bowlers

The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup held in the West Indies witnessed an extraordinary performance by a young Bangladeshi cricketer named Tamim Iqbal.

In a crucial group stage match against cricketing giants India, Tamim showcased his immense talent and fearlessness, leaving an indelible mark on the tournament.

On March 17, 2007, at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Bangladesh faced off against India in a must-win encounter. India, a formidable force in international cricket, was expected to comfortably overpower their spirited Bangladeshi counterparts. However, Tamim Iqbal had different plans, ready to take on the challenge and make a statement on the grand stage.

Batting first, Bangladesh needed a strong foundation to set a competitive total. Tamim launched a blistering assault on the Indian bowlers right from the start. He attacked the new ball with audacious strokes, punishing any loose deliveries with precision and power. Tamim's ability to find gaps in the field, coupled with his fearless approach, left the Indian team stunned and the crowd in awe.

Tamim's innings of 51 runs off 53 deliveries included seven glorious boundaries and two massive six. It was a masterclass in attacking batting, as he effortlessly dismantled the Indian bowling attack. His massive six off Zaheer Khan as he came down the track and whacked over long-on will always be rememberd. Commentator Ian Bishop had said, “Woah, look at this! A 17-year old really showing little respect to the elder statesman."

Akram Khan, the former Bangladesh captain said "I can assure you that we did not have the courage in our generation to play cricket like this."

Tamim Iqbal's innings against India in the 2007 World Cup was a watershed moment for Bangladeshi cricket. It marked a significant step forward in their development as a competitive cricketing nation. The performance not only boosted the team's morale but also instilled a sense of belief and confidence within the players and fans.

Adios Tamim!

That six against Zaheer khan, the century at Lords, the batting with a broken hand, the four consecutive fifties in Asia cup, that partnership with Soumya against Pakistan in 2015 (which I saw from the stand) - were all special.

Your cover drive was seriously underrated, one of the cleanest left handed cover drive after Saurav Ganguly.

I thought you should have stayed but personal dignity should be placed above a cricket career.

England coach Brendon McCullum wasn't happy with Bairstow run out. He said he will not be having beer with them anytime soon.

Spirit of Cricket and Brendon McCullum

Brendon McCullum's career was not only defined by his explosive batting but also by a few controversial incidents that left a lasting impact on the cricketing world. One such incident occurred in 2005 when McCullum ran out Zimbabwe's Christopher Mpofu while Blessing Mahwire was celebrating his well-deserved half-century.

Four years later, McCullum found himself at the center of another controversial stumping incident. This time, he stumped England's Paul Collingwood. However, realizing that Collingwood was not attempting to gain an unfair advantage, McCullum, along with then-captain Daniel Vettori, decided to recall him, demonstrating sportsmanship and fairness on the field.

In yet another incident, McCullum was involved in a run-out during a match against Sri Lanka. He ran out the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan while Kumar Sangakkara was celebrating his century. While the dismissal was within the laws of the game, it drew criticism for its perceived lack of sportsmanship.

Years later, in 2016, McCullum publicly expressed remorse for his actions. He acknowledged that although the incidents were within the rules, they did not align with the spirit of the game. Reflecting on his past actions, McCullum admitted that he would have acted differently if given the chance to turn back time.

"I would change my decisions if I could," McCullum stated, emphasizing the distinction between following the rules and adhering to the spirit of cricket. He recognized the importance of upholding the integrity and values of the game, which became glaringly obvious to him in hindsight.

These incidents serve as reminders that cricket is not just about the technicalities and rules; it is equally about upholding the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship. Despite the controversy surrounding these moments, Brendon McCullum's willingness to reflect on his actions and acknowledge their impact exemplifies the growth and maturity he attained throughout his cricketing journey.

Let's see the run out of Paul Collingwood.

The day the Tigers hunted the Kangaroos:

On this day Ashraful's Heroics led Bangladesh to Historic Victory over Australia. In a breathtaking display of skill and resilience, the Bangladesh cricket team stunned the cricketing world by defeating the formidable Australian team in a nail-biting encounter at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff in 2005. The hero of the day was none other than the young and talented Mohammed Ashraful, whose blistering knock not only inspired his team but also etched his name into cricketing folklore.

Batting first after winning the toss, the star packed Aussie team managed to score 249/5 in 50 overs.

Coming in at a precarious position with Bangladesh struggling at 72 for 3, the odds were heavily stacked against the minnows. However, with unwavering self-belief and a fierce determination to prove their mettle, Ashraful took center stage.

The right-handed batsman mesmerized the crowd with an array of exquisite strokes that belied his tender age. He took on the Australian bowling attack containing McGrath, Gillespie, Michael Clarke which was one of the most fearsome fast bowling lineups at that time.

As the tension mounted, Ashraful displayed nerves of steel, absorbing the pressure and delivering a sensational innings that left spectators and opponents alike in awe.

The defining moment of the match arrived when Ashraful reached his century by facing 101 balls. It was his maiden and Bangladesh's second ODI hundred. Coincidentally, Ashraful had been at the ground as a ball boy when Mehrab Hossain scored maiden ODI hundred for Bangladesh against Zimbabwe in 1999.

Tensions mounted soon after Ashraful got out just after his century. In last over Bangladesh needed seven runs with Rafique and Aftab on the crease. "I was given the last bloody over, defending seven" said Gillespie. Time stood still when Aftab hit an unbelievable six off Gillespie on very first ball of the final over. Bangladesh went on to win the match by 5 wickets with 4 balls remaining.

" I made a bit of room on the off side and I went for the shot. Mashallah, I timed it well. From the moment I struck it, I knew it was going for six. It hit the sweet part [of the bat]. I may have fallen over if he had bowled a yorker (laughs). It was a Kookaburra bat with a Matrix sticker. It was Enam's [Enamul Haque Jr] bat. I don't know where it went. I can't find it now" Aftab said to Cricinfo.

Adam Gilchrist wrote in his book "True Colours: My Life by Adam Gilchrist, 2008", "It was no fluke. They outplayed us in every department. Their desperation and desire were stronger than ours".

Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar said: "I am the happiest man in the world today. This win can take us a long way. We've heard they're dancing in the streets in Dhaka."

"How does it feel to drop the world cup, Herschelle?" That's what Steve Waugh reportedly taunted Gibbs after the South African fielder's premature celebration cost him a crucial catch.

This unforgettable incident unfolded on this day in 1999 during a high-stakes World Cup super six stage clash between Australia and South Africa. The Australians were in pursuit of a challenging target of 272, with Waugh on 56 when Gibbs granted him an unexpected reprieve. Up until that point, Gibbs had showcased his brilliance with a sensational century. With all eyes on him, he initially grasped the catch, only to lose control in his overzealous celebration. It was an inexplicable moment of sheer misfortune.

Seizing the opportunity, Waugh capitalized on the lifeline, going on to deliver an unbeaten masterclass, amassing a phenomenal 120 runs, and leading Australia to a resounding 5-wicket victory.

This triumph not only propelled Australia ahead of South Africa in the super six stage but also secured their place in the finals following a tied semifinal against the same opponents.

As the day drew to a close, Waugh's words echoed with truth, for it indeed appeared that Gibbs had let the World Cup slip away from their grasp.

Had Nasser Hussain been on the commentary box, he would have said, "What on earth was Herschelle thinking, dropping that catch? How does it feel to let the World Cup slip right through your fingers?"

On this Day in 1992 Imran Khan led Pakistan to win ICC Cricket world cup in Melbourne, Australia.

The 1992 Cricket World Cup is often remembered as the triumph of the "Cornered Tigers" - a term coined by the then captain of the Pakistan cricket team, Imran Khan, to describe the team's fighting spirit and determination to win against all odds.

Pakistan had entered the tournament as one of the underdogs, with many experts predicting that they would struggle to make it past the group stages. The team had also faced a lot of internal turmoil and criticism before the tournament. Imran Khan, who had been appointed captain just a year before the World Cup, had faced intense criticism from the media and former players for his aggressive leadership style and for dropping several senior players from the team.

However, the Pakistan team rallied around their captain and his vision of building a young and fearless team that could take on the world's best teams. Imran Khan motivated his players by reminding them that they were the "Cornered Tigers" - a team that had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Pakistan's campaign got off to a rocky start as they lost their first two matches against the West Indies and India. However, the team showed remarkable resilience and character in the remaining matches, winning six out of their next seven matches to qualify for the semi-finals.

In the semi-final against New Zealand, Pakistan once again found themselves in a precarious situation, with New Zealand setting a target of 262 runs. However, Pakistan's bowlers rose to the occasion, with Wasim Akram taking three wickets and Imran Khan taking two wickets to help restrict New Zealand to 262 runs. In reply, Pakistan chased down the target comfortably, winning the match by four wickets with six balls to spare.

In the final against England, Pakistan once again faced a daunting task, with England setting a target of 249 runs. However, Pakistan's batsmen rose to the occasion, with captain Imran Khan scoring a crucial 72 runs and Javed Miandad scoring 58 runs to help Pakistan cross the finish line. In the end, Pakistan won the match by 22 runs, clinching their first-ever World Cup trophy.

The "Cornered Tigers" became a symbol of inspiration for cricket fans in Pakistan and around the world. The team's underdog story and their never-say-die attitude continue to inspire new generations of cricketers and fans. The 1992 World Cup remains one of the greatest moments in Pakistan cricket history, and the legacy of the "Cornered Tigers" continues to live on.
