Hey folks! No episode again this week as it's been silly season and difficult to wriggle in interviews with guests between drinks and celebrations. Don't worry, new episodes on the horizon soon for 2023... see you all soon, nerds. x

With many unanswered questions about Jeff Goldb- sorry, Jurassic Park - we welcome evolutionary development ("Evo Devo") biologist Dr Qamariya Nasrullah to Type I Error to unravel the challenges of dinosaur DNA and cloning. Audio issues aside, we have a fascinating talk about good science communication, Jeff Goldblum's obvious thirst trap, cloning, why the mosquito sucks as a DNA source, the world's last thylacine Benjamin and the real life attempts to use living species to revive the dead.

I welcome Zac Holmes - fourth year PhD student in laser physics - onto the pod to talk about the technical woes and engineering labours of Star Wars' famous weapon - the lightsaber.Learn about why mistreating the prequels is a crime, why lightsabers should be plasma-sabers instead, what makes them coloured (spoiler: Jedi only do it for the Insta) and why you'd need a special lightsaber to get through Darth Vader's suit. And we talk briefly about the Darth Jar Jar theory (meesa sorry).

We welcome back parasitoid wasp researcher Dr Erinn-Fagan Jeffries to round out our discussion of Alien’s Xenomorph.
We talk: the adult and queen Xenomorphs, 3D glasses on praying mantids (it’s a real study), what chiton and spiracles are, why lanky bois can breathe better, a Game of Thrones in the eusocial insect world, and our brilliant spinoff idea of the Xenomorph’s tongue hyperparasitoid.

After yesterday’s enthusiastic announcement about Monday’s upcoming episode - we have promptly had a power outage like much of South Australia! 28 hours of no power and counting… ⚡️

With final edits and episode upload not possible until I can charge my laptop at work tomorrow, Part 2 of our chat with Dr Erinn Fagan-Jeffries likely won’t be released until Tuesday morning.

Sorry about this! Can’t wait to share the new ep soon.

"Are they finally done talking about aliens and wasps?" you ask, waspishly.

NOPE. THINK AGAIN.

Dr Erinn Fagan-Jeffries returns on Monday's episode to round out our discussion of the Xenomorph from Alien and its uncanny resemblance to a parasitoid wasp.

Here's a clip of the real life chestbursters from National Geographic.

Parasitoid wasp researcher and taxonomist Dr Erinn Fagan-Jeffries comes onto the pod to talk with me about the insect-origins of Alien's Xenomorph.

We talk: what keeping to the code is for taxonomists, why tardigrades don’t need to drink 8 glasses of water a day, why rove beetles are toxic in your life, why Pompillid wasps are great mums and terrible enemies, why fly larvae have a PR problem and how a virus and a wasp work together to take down caterpillars.

Welcome... to Jurassic Park!

Listen to our chat with palaeontology researcher and self-professed dinosaur nerd about the evolutionary relationships (phylogeny) and palaeontology of the Jurassic Park dinosaurs.

We talk: Ash's childhood of dinosaurs, why hips DO lie when it comes to evolution, whether you should fight a pack of dog-sized velociraptors or a T-rex with a sword, what on Earth are Voorhies fossils, the safety implications of a perfect skeleton, why we need to apologise to Jurassic World's Giganotosaurus and Atrociraptor and why Fantasia is fantastic.

And yep, we're up and running from velociraptors on Spotify, Google Podcasts, iHeartRadio and Podbean now!

Much like the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, a lot of work has gone into birthing this goliath of a first episode. I welcome soon-to-be PhD palaeontology researcher Ash Turner on to discuss the evolutionary relationships (phylogeny) and palaeontology of Jurassic Park's dinosaurs. We talk: Ash's childho...
