IMPROVED LIVELIHOODS FOR PASTORAL WOMEN AS BEADWORKS-P OFFERS THEM LIFELINE

By Betty Luke

Pastoralist women in Laikipia, Marsabit, Samburu and Isiolo counties are diversifying their means of livelihood, from livestock keeping, to entrepreneurship for improved livelihoods.

This comes at the backdrop of a prolonged drought that has made pastoralism an unreliable venture due to changing weather patterns in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) regions across the country.

A beadWORKS program supported by the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), through the NRT-Trading arm, has turned out to be a gamechanger for women in the drought-hit counties, who are now able to sell their products across the globe.

The women, majority who have beading skills, form groups in their villages and pick a team leader, commonly referred to as a star beader, who links them to NRT.

NRT-T Gender Director Beatrice Lempaira says the main aim of bringing together women was to mentor them on possible opportunities available that can help earn a decent living.

“Since beading is a traditional activity among the pastoralists, we thought of ways through which we can help the local communities make products that are viable for the international market," she told The Press Point.

The organization provides raw materials among them beads and wires to the women who then make different products, as per order guidelines, and send them back to the NRT that links them to the market.

"We first source for a market and once we have one, we supply the groups with beads that they use to make different products depending with what the client needs," Production manager Ms Karin Sepeika says.
