Herb Aronoff, to be inducted into the CJHOF (from his bio):

Herb Aronoff was born in Cincinnati and was raised in Richmond, Indiana. He began clarinet at age 8 and then later developed his love for the sax. Music became his life early, especially his love of jazz and he began playing professionally while still in his teen years in the 1950’s.

Many good jazz musicians came out of Richmond, including Harold Jones, who became TonyBennetts’s drummer. Harold wrote a book entitled “The Singer’s Drummer” in which he
mentioned Herb. They were together in the Richmond High School Band program.

Herb holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and did graduate work at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory
of Music, studying Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute and Oboe. He became an accomplished doubleron those instruments and played in touring Broadway productions including West Side Story, Chicago, Hello Dolly and many others. As a freelance woodwind performer he played in a wide variety of Cincinnati ensembles including: The Blue Wisp Big Band, Carmon DeLeone Studio Big Band, Bill Walters Big Band, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Pops, Cincinnati Playhouse Orchestra, Cincinnati Children’s Theater Orchestra, Taft Theater Orchestra, Palace
Theatre Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra, Cincinnati Music Hall Shows, Aronoff Center shows Orchestra, the Bob Braun Show on WLWT, the Lookout House Show Band and the
Beverly Hills Supper Club Show Band.

Herb was a charter member of the Blue Wisp Big Band, in which he played for 40 years . He appeared in all their recordings through his retirement in 2020. He also recorded with the
Cincinnati Symphony Pops Orchestra for nearly 30 years. Over the years Herb worked with such professionals as Red Skelton, Bob Hope, Liberace, Yul Brenner, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley
MacLaine, Carol Channing, Gladys Knight, Tony Orlando, Doc Severinsen, Dave Brubeck, Rosemary Clooney, Eddie Daniels, Plas Johnson, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Mel Torme,
Nelson Riddle, Linda Ronstadt and many others. He recorded for the Decca, Telarc, Mopro and Sea Breeze labels.

In addition to his rigorous performing career, he was an outstanding educator, having taught at CCM as an adjunct professor and many years in the public schools in
Massachusetts and Ohio. After his retirement from the schools, he and his wife established the Aronoff Studio which they operated until their retirement in 2020. His deep love for
music, especially jazz, was his indelible gift to hundreds of students, many of whom went on to their own significant musical careers, because of his dedication and
uncompromising artistic vision.

Herb passed away from complications of Parkinson’s Disease on Jan. 18, 2024. He will be inducted into the CJHOF May 19th at Mayerson Jewish Community Center.

Notes from NOLA.

Writes Ashley Kahn, “Say the word “jazz” in New Orleans, Louisiana and to many — visitors and locals alike – the sound of traditional jazz comes to mind. Preservation ain’t just a hall, it’s the style of “historic” music that tends to suck up all the air and limited resources available for jazz in the city in which it was proverbially born.
For almost seven years now, Peter Harris has been swimming against this current, single-handedly producing and leading a four-night-a-week performance series at the Bayou Bar in the Pontchartrain Hotel — a series that is hands-down the city’s most consistent and inspiring connection to the current national state of jazz, call it post-bop, mainstream or just “modern.”
Peter himself is one of the city’s leading jazz bassists, who came up under Ellis Marsalis, and continues to be the top-list choice — mostly on acoustic but sometimes electric — for gigs of jazz-as-it’s-played-now. He is quiet, serious and deeply sincere about the music he has dedicated himself to. He performs regularly with groups led by Herlin Riley, Germaine Bazzle, Shannon Powell and Jason Marsalis. He teaches at the University of New Orleans, as well at Loyola, Tulane, Baton Rouge Community College, and various high schools.
The role he has assigned himself – that of producer and curator, bandleader and paymaster of a venue that requires him to say “no” as often as if not more than he says “yes” — is a measure of his dedication. It’s not easy taking on a role like that, morphing from musician to The Man. But he’s done it, and the local music scene is better for it. Peter is ensuring the future of this music, providing a home where it can flourish. That’s what the Bayou Bar is about.
The Bayou Bar scene started just before Covid-19 came on, somehow survived the pandemic and now flourishes as an important local gig for improvisers of all styles and generations. It’s where 91-year old Charlie Gabriel blows timeless ballads supported by a rhythm section averaging 50 years younger, a scene resounding with the interactive energy created by the cream of the city’s jazz talent (besides Riley and Marsalis, Derek Douget, David Torkanowski, Steve Masakowski, Johnny Vidacovich, Dwight Fitch Jr., Ashlin Parker, Gerald Watkins Jr., Tony Digradi, John Michael Bradford . . . the list goes on) and national talent on tour stopping by. It’s where top-tier musicians can play with the loose, unscripted freedom which allows the music to grow and develop into something it wasn’t before, where tomorrow’s headliners are being born and audiences cultivated. It draws a mixed crowd of music enthusiasts, including some encountering modern jazz for the first — but surely not the last — time.
The place ain’t quiet – it’s not the Village Vanguard. But the enthusiasm and the energy, the experience of creative jazz at the Bayou Bar is exactly the kind of support this music so richly deserves. Peter Harris’s leadership has brought this about, and so the Jazz Journalist Association is proud to recognize and celebrate him as its 2024 New Orleans Jazz Hero.”

A couple weeks ago, founding member Herb Aronoff passed away. Herbie was a great musician and friend, and our love goes out to Paula and the entire family. Special thanks to Larry Dickson for putting these thoughts together.

REMEMBRANCES OF HERB ARONOFF

I met Herb in the late 1960's. Our first major music job was playing saxophones with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on a Decca recording (LPs in 1970) of Dave Brubeck's "Elementals," which featured Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan as soloists. 3500 gigs later we were still playing together professionally on a weekly basis, mostly in Cincinnati, and Herb had become a close friend to all my family. He performed and recorded with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for nearly 30 years and was a founding member (in 1980) of the Blue Wisp Big Band. He appears on all of their many recordings to date. I personally will miss his wry sense of humor, as when he warmed up with the big band and finished by playing a repeated series of Bb's following the pattern of ...---... (the SOS call for "help"). On those scattered occasions when we found ourselves playing a particularly bad gig with some struggling group (now long forgotten, thankfully), Herb would remind me at the end of the job---by quoting his version of Shakespeare---that "All's well that ends."

Most importantly we should all remember that Herb Aronoff led a dedicated life as an excellent musician and also an outstanding teacher. The Aronoff Studio, which he established with co-musician and loving wife Paula, developed many talented young instrumentalists, several of whom became professional musicians as a result of their studies. I hope that Herb can now rest in peace---and enjoy playing all those great reeds up in heaven.

Happy birthday to the legendary musician, drummer-composer, bebop pioneer, and activist Max Roach, born one hundred years ago today!

The iconic artist's groundbreaking performances and social activism continue to impact music, culture, and socio-artistic expression. To honor Max's music and spirit, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, featuring music direction from drummer Obed Calvaire, premieres new arrangements of Max's works at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Jan. 19-20. Following the New York performances, the band tours the Max Roach Centennial Celebration throughout the U.S. Jan. 23-28.

“You could take four bars from Max and come up with a lifetime of vocabulary on the instrument – playing bebop,” says Obed. “That’s how much he’s influenced our music. He was just a genius and there will never be another Max Roach.”
