MRI of a neuroscientist kissing her 2-month-old son taken at Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, MIT (2015)
One of the researchers, Rebecca Saxe, had said “No one, to my knowledge, had ever made an MR image of a mother and child. We made this one because we wanted to see it. To some people, this image was a disturbing reminder of the fragility of human beings. Others were drawn to the way that the two figures, with their clothes and hair and faces invisible, became universal, and could be any human mother and child, at any time or place in history”
Personally, it makes me think of my mother. Specifically, when she read bedtime stories. No idea why.

North Korea is reopening its borders to foreign tourists this December, starting with the newly revamped city of Samjiyon.
This rare opportunity comes after years of isolation, with the country eager to show off its “socialist utopia” — complete with luxury hotels, ski resorts, and modern amenities.
The rest of the country may soon follow, making this the first major tourism push since the pandemic shut its doors in 2020.

Red screen mode on Apple devices is an accessibility feature designed to ease eye strain, especially in dim lighting or for those sensitive to bright or blue light.
By filtering out blue and green light, this mode gives the screen a reddish tint, which is less likely to disrupt sleep patterns and is gentler on the eyes.

Juanita Care’s Avant-Garde Mouthpieces
care_’s designs are anything but tame. Often broaching into the surreal, the pieces form a fantasy that draws from horror cinema, futurism, shamanism, and even medical tools.
Care’s designs first arose from founder Adrien Flores’ visual experiments around identity - specifically, the tools people use to “modify the identity frames” attributed by society. During a visit to a technician to commission a silver tooth as part of a wider piece, he suddenly realised he could begin creating oral jewellery himself.
His fascination with mouths grew while considering their bottomless symbolism, a “[presented] interior”. As Flores told Coeval Magazine, the mouth indicates social class, beauty, even drinking and smoking habits, and yet oral jewellery in the west has only recently become acceptable via Hip-Hop. Other cultures have been bejewelling, colouring, and filing teeth for millennia. His work often draws on that history, but imagines what dental jewellery will look like in 100 or 1000 years. Even the name ‘Juanita’ derives from a preserved Peruvian mummy found surrounded by jewels.
“[Teeth are] kind of an identity card implanted in us… it’s a really strange part of our body. It seems strange to all the rest of our composition. Well, I mean, it has enamel on it. It’s already a work of art. I think that’s what has always fascinated me.” - Adrien Flores speaking to Dazed Beauty in 2018
The challenge in the work comes in balancing comfort with experimental designs, som**hing aided by the fact Flores does everything from designing to production in-house. Although the pieces might be shocking, they’re all designed to be worn, highlighted by photographs that show the pieces in surreal in-mouth shots. That’s true even for those that force the wearer to expose their open mouth; the pieces never function as standalone sculptures, always designed alongside the client with their mouth in mind.
