Fred Easter is a well-known voice from THE LAST NEGROES AT HARVARD podcast. Born in NYC in 1941, Fred prepared at The Gunnery, Washington, CT and George Washington High School, NYC. This video is an interview from the documentary film of the same name produced by Kent Garrett that preceded both the podcast and book.

“Black rage? No question in my mind that I'm a pi**ed off Black man today. Tomorrow, I expect to wake up pi**ed off. Yes, no question in my mind. I don't think Harvard had anything to do with my coming to understand myself as a Black man.”-Fred

Fred was born and grew up in the projects, in Harlem, NY and attended elementary and high school in the city schools. Through the actions of the National Scholarship and Service Fund for Negro Students, he spent the next two years at The Gunnery, a private prep school in Connecticut. He thinks that Harvard admitted so many "Negroes" in 1959 because they realized that 1963, the year we would graduate, was the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. After Harvard, Fred would devote his life in San Francisco and Minneapolis to working with school and social organizations that help at-risk inner-city kids.

Join Fred along with host Kent Garrett, classmates, and special guests to talk everything from politics to Harvard to being Black in America in 2020 and all topics in between.

Today we honor Indigenous communities across the country that have been hurt by the same European colonialism that produced and was built upon the slavery of black and brown people for far too long. Here’s to refusing to be extinguished by systemic racism and brutality and pushing back. Here’s to surviving to honor those who came before us.

John Woodford is a well-known voice from THE LAST NEGROES AT HARVARD podcast. Born in Benton Harbor, Michigan in 1942, he prepared at Benton Harbor High School before heading off to Harvard University. This video is an interview from the documentary film of the same name produced by Kent Garrett that preceded both the podcast and book.

“I don't think they were trying to turn us into Harvard gentlemen any more than they were trying to turn everyone else into one. But the material they were working with was not all that malleable. I would say most of the people I knew were not likely to become Harvard gentlemen.”-Woodford

John grew up in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the son of a physician. As a freshman at Harvard, he met Eliza Duffy, the Radcliffe girl he would marry in 1965 (who you may recall from Episode 8). Early in his career, he wrote for EBONY and Jet, The New York Times, and Muhammad Speaks. He and Eliza returned to Michigan to raise their family, where John edited various publications for the University of Michigan.

Join John along with host Kent Garrett, classmates, and special guests to talk everything from politics to Harvard to being Black in America and all topics in between.

Episode 8 of THE LAST NEGROES AT HARVARD podcast welcomed Radcliffe alums Liza Woodford, Marcy Benstock, Cindy Wardle, and Connie McDougald to the studio. Radcliffe College was established in 1879, “when Elizabeth Cary Agassiz and other women established the Society for the Collegiate Instruction of Women.” Radcliffe was associated with Harvard University as its women’s counterpart, and over the years evolved until its complete integration with Harvard in 1999.

In 1963, the year that 18 young Black men graduated from Harvard (including Kent Garrett, John Woodford, Gerry Secundy, and Fred Easter), Radcliffe began issuing joint Harvard-Radcliffe diplomas to undergraduates on its road to integration with Harvard. Join the women and men as they discuss this time in their lives and what it was like to attend Ivy League colleges in the sixties.

Today, , we’re celebrating all workers and their achievements, especially those who have labored now or in the past for unlivable wages in unfair, unsafe, or cruel conditions.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has widened the “spread between racial group jobless rates in the last three months [and] reversed years of gains towards slowly bringing unemployment rates between Blacks and whites closer to parity.”

Now is not the time to grow complacent. As we celebrate Labor Day, we must stay vigilant in demanding equality including fair pay and job opportunities in the pandemic and during the climb back out to “normal” life.

The gap in the U.S. jobless rate between whites and Blacks widened for a third straight month in July, making the gulf between the races the widest in more than five years, Labor Department data released on Friday showed.

California’s police misconduct bill is back in the news with some amendments. Roger Goldman discussed this bill and police decertification during Episode 6 of THE LAST NEGROES AT HARVARD podcast.

“California is currently one of just a few states without a law for decertifying police officers. The bill seeks to change that, creating a process to strip police powers from officers who have committed a variety of offenses.”

In the latest episode of THE LAST NEGROES AT HARVARD podcast Roger Goldman, Saint Louis University School of Law professor emeritus, joined the guys to talk police decertification.

“Roger L. Goldman is the nation’s foremost expert on police licensing and license revocation laws. For more than two decades he has been helping states write and adopt laws that provide for removing the license or certificate of an officer who engages in serious misconduct, such as sexual assault and brutality.

When Professor Goldman began to address the problem of unfit police officers’ moving from one department to another within a state, 15 states were without decertification/revocation laws. Today, only six states remain without revocation authority; he is now working with individuals in those states to enact such laws to keep bad officers off their streets. Professor Goldman’s ultimate goal is to help create a federally mandated national data bank of decertified police officers to prevent them from moving and being employed in a different state.

Educated at Harvard College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Professor Goldman is also a leading expert on the U.S. Supreme Court and constitutional law. In addition to his many articles on police licensing, he is an author of three books on the U.S. Supreme Court: The Role of the Supreme Court in Protecting Civil Rights and Liberties; Justice William J. Brennan, Jr.: Freedom First; and Thurgood Marshall: Justice for All, which was a finalist for the 1992 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work. Both national and local media frequently seek Professor Goldman’s professional commentary.”

Goldman is a fellow Harvard University Class of 1963 alum.

In THE LAST NEGROES AT HARVARD August 12th podcast episode we welcomed guest Matthew Alemu, PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan, to talk white privilege.

In his recent opinion piece for the Detroit Free Press, Alemu states, “[w]hat remains undiscussed is the daily – mostly unintentional – complicity of whites in the maintenance of systemic racism.” He goes on to offer suggestions to white Americans for meaningful, genuine actions for standing in solidarity with African Americans. Alemu provides insight into the white privilege that many white Americans don’t see, much less acknowledge, and how by not seeing it, are only compounding the issue.

Projects from the Catskills

My current projects include The Last Negroes at Harvard (podcast and book) | One in a Million (podcast and radio segment) | The 8:01 (radio show and YouTube channel). For more please visit: kentgarrett.org.

I graduated from Harvard College in 1963 and worked for a few years in advertising, as an account executive and television commercial producer. Soon, however, journalism became my passion and I moved on to a career of over 30 years in television news. For ten years, I traveled throughout the world as a Senior Producer with the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw broadcast; ten years before that, I was a Producer with The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. Most recently, I was News Director with WICZ-TV, a Fox affiliate station in Binghamton, while at the same time operating an organic dairy farm in Delaware County, supplying milk to Horizon Organic.

During my journalism career I was honored with two News & Documentary EMMY Awards in 1984, produced three hour-long, network documentaries for CBS Reports, worked as News Director in the award winning WCVB -TV News and Public Affairs unit in Needham, Massachusetts and won a PEABODY Award in 1968 as Producer on the National Education Television Series Black Journal.
