Frames within frames. Brilliant cinematography. Fabulous acting. Melancholic musical score. Beautiful Angkor Wat. Well written dialogues. Never thought a girl and a boy walking into a noodle shop for dinner could be so heart melting.

Winter Light (1963) | 🎬 Ingmar Bergman

Have you ever felt the restlessness against the God’s silence? The indifference in his eyes for your sufferings and your pain. Have you ever loved someone so unconditionally despite the fact that they hate you to the core? If yes, this movie will catch all your attention and pierce through you to explore things that you have never dared explore yourself. Bergman is brave, he has every now and then dared to ask the difficult questions— those which have no definitive answer and leave you with more questions. Such a good piece of cinema!

A Brighter Summer Day (1991) | 🎬 Edward Yang

This 4 hour long masterpiece by Yang hit me with surprise and caught me totally off guard. Believe me, even being a 4 hour long film, there is not a single frame I would throw away, because every frame is like a painting beautifully articulated with an ingenuity that surpasses any other works I have seen. Long static takes, somewhat similar to Ozu, but distinct in its own style. The story makes you confused at first, then enthusiast, then eager and sad. The movie is about growing up and self reflection and a search of identity in a late 20th century Taiwan. This was my second movie by Edward Yang after YiYi, but Yang has already been in my top 10 directors or all time. Asian cinema deserves much more attention, I’m so glad I watched this masterpiece and will come back to it again!

Tokyo Twilight (1957) | 🎬 Yasujiro Ozu

My second Ozu film after Tokyo Story, and also Ozu’s last black-and-white film, Tokyo Twilight is another masterpiece by legendary Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu. The presence of Ineko Arima alone is so charismatic in this movie that tells simple yet so emotionally complicated story. The cinematography surpasses the bar as well, but it’s the thematic film score that surpasses it all.

Killers of The Flower Moon (2023) | 🎬 Martin Scorsese

This movie, being 3 hours and 26 minutes long, didn’t make it to the theaters in Nepal back in October. I almost missed a chance to see it in theatre, but luckily I found it being shown at Shaw Theatre in Singapore during my vacation a few weeks back. My eyes were clung to the screen literally every minute of the story, and I am so glad I was lucky to get a chance to see this movie in big screen.

The things that we hate and still do everyday is what keeps our sanity and prevents us from going crazy. Doing nothing is definitely a difficult thing to do.

I almost had a stroke when this scene in the picture played.

Throne of Blood (1957) | 🎬 Akira Kurosawa

Throne of Blood is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, where the plot has been changed from Medieval Scotland to feudal Japan. There are many sprinkles of the stylistic elements drawn from Noh drama. Kurosawa’s adaptation of Macbeth starts Toshiro Mifune and Isuzu Yamada as characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth respectively.

"There goes that dream..." . . This scene from The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) is such a sad and heartbreaking scene for me from the entire movie. Ivan's Childhood (1962) | dir. Andrei Tarkovsky This kiss scene in particular is one of the most iconic and unforgettable scenes I've ever experienced in cinema. Ivan's Childhood was the debut film directed by the legendary Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky. It tells the story of orphaned boy Ivan, whose parents were killed by the invading German forces, and his experiences during World War II. This film won great critical acclaim and made Tarkovsky internationally known. It won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1962 and the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1962. Famous filmmakers such as Ingmar Bergman, Sergei Parajanov and Krzysztof Kieślowski praised the film and cited it as an influence on their work.
