Question: What is your take on- The younger you are, the higher the risks you should take?

One of my good friends has a target of making $10m before he’s 40. He’s strategy has been, part of his portfolio deals with high risk investment placements that yield great returns, the funds he yields, then Service the low risk investment placements.
ie run a business, then the profits are reinvested in real estate, government bonds.

This type of investor has learned the art of creating Cashflow then securing capital.

We should always be careful not to be Greedy. Risk is a great rewarder but also punishes the ignorant and the greedy. Those that understand Risk have learnt how to manage it.

A business, Forex trading, Village banking are risky investment vehicles.
1. Retail businesses can make you upto 300% profit.
2. Village bank has returns as high as 10% per month

Because of how great the returns are, the next cycle of your placement should always be approached with caution. A Suggestion would be, from profits made, do not reinvest 100% back into the business/placement. Preserve atleast 60% of it in a safer investment vehicle. That way your bases will always be covered.

Greed has costed people more money that we can imagine, risk might have favored you once but you might not be as lucky the second time. Know when to step out of a high risk investment vehicle.

As an Investor beginner, realize that every investment undertaken has some form of risk. Whether you’re going in for Capital preservation or Cashflow, always look out for the worst case scenario.

There’s no problem in being a High Risk taker, it only becomes a problem if you don’t have the backbone of handling the loses. Because the higher the return-the higher the Risk!

Every well meaning Investment service provider should well communicate the Risk associated to the product you’re buying into.

We have an old saying “The higher the Risk, the higher the return”. It might not always prove right in all Investment vehicles but it does add up in most simulations made when calculating Return on Investments.

What this simply entails is that for an Investment promising a 100% in return (happiness), program your mind for the possible risk of -100% loss. This is the inverse relationship of risk and return.

Risk and return allows you to understand that investments placed in Real estate, Government Bonds, treasury bills, Business or Village Banking, will have different returns because of different risk exposure.

There’s a reward in Risk and that’s the return. The Return just differs based on how much Risk you’re willing to take. And that’s why every so often assess your risk appetite to preserve your capital in the long run.

Government Bonds for instance will offer Capital preservation and good returns (they’re also considered low risk). Village bank will also offer capital preservation and much higher returns in a much shorter time period, but will require more effort from you to protect your money (Considered high risk and is not regulated by any authority). Failure to identify risk will cost you your capital.

Both Investments in the previous scenario are great the only difference is exposure to risk which determines your ROI (Returns on Investments).

Don’t feel bad for taking up high risk investments, it simply proves you have the ability to handle the loss. It only becomes a problem when you have a huge appetite for returns without the mental fortitude to handle loss of capital.

Think through how much Risk you’re willing to take, your returns will then reflect consequently.
