King wipes away tears as he becomes first British head of state to visit Auschwitz on Holocaust Memorial Day

Charles joins dignitaries from around the world to mark 80th anniversary of liberation of N**i concentration camp while Prince and Princess of Wales attend service in London alongside Keir Starmer.

The King wiped away tears as he became the first British head of state to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau, joining dignitaries from around the world to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the N**i concentration camp on Holocaust Memorial Day.

The British monarch was seen shedding a tear during a service at the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum and memorial in Poland on Monday afternoon. He bowed his head as he placed a candle at the site on behalf of the UK, alongside foreign monarchs, presidents, prime ministers and Holocaust survivors.

Earlier, Charles visited the heart of Krakow’s Jewish community, speaking with Holocaust survivors and issuing a warning to the world that remembering the “evils of the past remains a vital task” as he met those who lived through one of humanity’s darkest eras.

Meanwhile, the Princess of Wales hugged and held hands with Holocaust survivors as she and her husband attended official commemorations to mark the memorial day at Guildhall in central London, with the Prince of Wales describing their attendance as “a great honour”.

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival has established itself as one of the world’s largest, with almost 500 events across 89 venues in 6 days kicking off this year from April 30th.

A preview of all the events launched on 24th January, with tickets going on sale from 12 noon next Monday 3rd February.

Now in its 26th year, reflecting on last year’s record-breaking event, sales were up 23% with just over 8,400 tickets sold and visitors coming far and wide from 39 different countries.

An economic impact assessment revealed that the 2024 Festival generated over £2.2million to the local economy during the festival and supported around 20 full-time jobs.

Henry Angus is to take over the tenure as Chair from George McNeil for this year’s Festival. A well-respected figure in Speyside, his career spans across established companies in Morayshire and Aberdeenshire. After a long-standing relationship with the Festival, he recently joined the Board and is looking forward to taking the helm and helping further elevate its stature.

Henry said, “Last year was record-breaking and the spotlight was firmly on Speyside. This is the most populous whisky region with the greatest array of distilleries at any festival globally. It brings together whisky fans, distillers and visitors that love this beautiful part of the world. From masterclasses to music, from quizzes to fireside gatherings, from culture to history the calendar is full of opportunities to share the water of life with fellow whisky lovers, aficionados and people that just enjoy a dram.”

With 28 villages and towns in Moray Speyside, many of the 51 distilleries will throw open their doors including a number that are usually closed to the public. Characterised by rolling patchwork hills, a terrain that epitomises the whisky produced and the meandering River Spey that lends its waters to making some of the world’s finest whisky, this Festival has it all.

The event will kick off with an industry dinner on Wed 30th April, co-hosted by Speyside Distillers Ltd followed by the annual ceilidh on 2nd May for visitors to the Festival. Both events will take place for the first time at the Macdonald Highlands Hotel, in Aviemore. Usually pre-sold, a rare opportunity to secure a spot at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky School will launch this year, along with the ticket sales.

The second 18-hole course, Roost, takes golfers on a journey back in time to the relaxed charm of Old Florida with canopies of moss-draped trees, sandy soil and tranquil setting. The course peacefully flows across sandy scrublands and rolling meadows featuring rare 50-foot elevation changes and a 40-foot-deep sinkhole. The majesty of century-old live oaks encourage careful shot-shaping, while four bunkerless holes reflect the abundance of natural features. Inspired by the rare, historic achievements of great collaborations in golf history, Roost was synergistically designed by Mike Nuzzo and Kyle Franz, along with Ran Morrissett as Golf Course Architecture Advisor. Together they established the routing and brought in the legendary Rod Whitman to produce a diverse set of greens that are unified yet distinct. This collaborative vision showcases the land as the star of the 7,200-yard course for a serene yet captivating golf experience. Named for the wild turkeys that roam the course and roost in its gorgeous 100-year-old oaks, Roost is set beside farmland where cows graze under shady trees—the very picture of bucolic bliss.

The Squeeze
For those looking to enjoy more golf in less time, The Squeeze is a dynamic 10-hole course that blends diverse, dramatic terrain with a relaxed, celebratory atmosphere. Designed by Mike Nuzzo, this unconventional course features half-par holes alongside par 3s, par 4s, and par 5s, each presenting distinct challenges. Balancing playful whimsy with strategic intrigue, The Squeeze delivers an engaging experience for golfers of all ages.

The Wedge
Small on size but big on golf, The Wedge, also designed by Nuzzo, is an 11-hole par-3 course, providing a unique, immersive experience with expansive waste areas, sloping greens and varied lies. Showcasing speakers and low-profile lighting, The Wedge creates a lively atmosphere, allowing golfers to enjoy the course past dark.
