In a world where talking past each other and instantly cancelling others is commonplace, let’s be humble enough to listen to others and, more importantly, the Holy Spirit as we seek to love God and others better.

The point of sharing what has been dubbed “the Shaniqua story” is not to drag or hype the cohosts, but to give a real life story on what it can look like to pursue what promotes peace. We hope our story is a reminder that the scriptures we base our faith upon are not simply abstract theories, but must be lived out practically for the world to see its potency against the darkness of this world. The Old Testament has laws protecting the most vulnerable populations (immigrants, the poor, etc). The New Testament clearly carries the heart of the law in Scriptures like this. Taking care of the marginalized and the vulnerable is a good marker of our faith. So is not being conformed to ways of this world (Romans 12:1) [Hear more in our latest podcast! Link in bio.]

Some will use passages scripture to deny passionate calling for change. However, the desire to right wrongs and combat injustice are similar to God’s response to injustice through the Bible. He gets angry about the injustice in this world, too. Being slow to anger doesn’t mean dismissing those who are passionate about seeing a change. [Hear more in our latest podcast! Link in bio.]

When injustice is present and prevalent in our world, it’s tempting to try and use anger as the fuel to create change. But as the scripture states, the impact is minimal at best, and harmful at worst. Being slow to anger doesn’t mean don’t get angry. It’s leading with anger that doesn’t accomplish what we think it will. [Hear more in our latest podcast! Link in bio.]

Even if we don’t know or understand all of the details surrounding someone’s hurt, we can still acknowledge that they are indeed hurting. Invalidating others’ pain is not a win for logic or righteousness. (Hint: Those who have a hard to engaging with someone in their grief usually struggle with grieving themselves.) For those who have been told not to grieve because God was in control, I’m sorry. The Bible shows Jesus’ grief even when He knew he would raise Lazarus from the dead. If Jesus goes there, we can, too.

We come face to face with Jesus’s grief and deep love in John 11. Oh, that God Himself would lead the way in our emotions and show us how (and that it’s okay) to grieve. We thank Him for this blessing in a time where there is so much to grieve.

We often justify our actions and decisions, but God knows the real reasons why do what we do or even the vote the way we vote. Christians, have you sought God about your voting ballot? Moreover, have you asked Him to reveal any ulterior motives for your voting tendencies? If you haven’t voted yet, it’s not too late to submit your ballot (and more importantly your heart) to the Lord.

The Israelite’s desire for a king came from a real need for change, but their solution stopped short of seeking God for how to right the wrongs of injustice. This left them vulnerable to the corruptions they experienced with nearly every king. They got what they wanted, but they were left sorely disappointed by the state of their nation by the end of the Old Testament. How often do we settle and attempt to gain a good thing from something (or someone) other than God?

As you exercise your right to vote, be sure to pray for all of those who are running. Praying for them doesn’t mean you agree with them- it’s an act of obedience and submission to the God that’s greater than any man or woman who holds any government office.

Gods heart for the oppressed and the marginalized is clearly revealed in the Bible. He not only grieves injustice of those who belong to Him, but is despises when His own children perpetuate it (see: many prophetic books in the Old Testament)

We often like to quote Proverbs 3:5-6 in Christian circles, but are we aware that our default is not usually to trust and lean on God? Acknowledging God in all our ways requires continual and intentional communication with in God (see: prayer and Bible reading), which gives us perspective and insight on how we are to love Him, love others, and navigate injustice.

Starting with God and what He says is the best foundation for both faith and our perspective on social justice (spoiler alert: He cares about justice and hates injustice).

God’s love for us didn’t start with our love for Him. He chose a path to reconcile with us at a great cost to Himself. Justice was served for our sin, the punishment we deserved poured out on Jesus Christ on the cross. If we want to talk about reconciliation and justice, the cross and the truth of the gospel is the best place to start.

No matter how passionate we are about justice in society, we will become exhausted, overwhelmed, or even apathetic to the sheer amount of brokenness we witness. Only God’s love through Jesus can sustain us to do His work in the world.
