My wife, Maria Zurbuch, is the most amazing, talented, beautiful, wonderful woman I have ever known :)

She made me a BEAUTIFUL cigar box for Valentine's Day (yes, she made this herself)!

It has burned on it Genesis 1:3 from both the Hebrew Tanakh and Greek Septuagint.

"God said, 'Let there be light' and there was light."

TWO LOGICAL ARGUMENTS IN FAVOR OF THE “INFALLIBLE SAFETY” OF THE ORDINARY MAGISTERIUM

Thesis: Individuals cannot and ought not accuse the Ordinary Magisterium (OM) of Pope Francis as having had promulgated heresy or serious error.

NOTE: Definitions of terms used in this post, and in this blog more widely can be found here.

My reasoning for this is two-fold:

OUTLINE OF THE THEOLOGICAL CENSURES

The following is my paraphrase and synthesis of the Catholic Encyclopedia (NewAdvent) on the Theological Censures of the Catholic Church. I have quoted and given a link to the entire section at the end of this article.

I think the format that said Encyclopedia uses is a bit difficult to wrap one's mind around, so I attempt herein to outline the Theological Censures in a more understandable way.

Hope you enjoy!

ON PRIVATE JUDGEMENT vs. THE MAGISTERIUM - EXCERPTS FROM TESTEM BENEVOLENTIAE NOSTRAE
POPE LEO XIII - 1899

Please excuse my editing of this excerpt. In order not to make this post too long, I cut out certain parts of this quote. It was difficult to not just leave it all in. If you want to read the document for yourself, I will attach a link below. It is beautiful... and convicting.

SOME EXCERPTS ON THE "INFALLIBLE SAFETY" OF THE NON-DEFINITIVE MAGISTERIUM

More excerpts from magisterial texts in support of the proposition of the "Charism of Safety" (aka. "Infallible Safety") as regards the ordinary (non-definitive) magisterium of the Roman Pontiff:

"***So the sheep of Christ should consider safe and eat cheerfully the food to which Peter’s voice and authority directs them;*** but despite any beauty and charm, they should shun as harmful and plague-ridden, what this voice forbids them. Those who do not comply are certainly not to be counted among the sheep of Christ."
~ Pope Pius VII, Diu Satis, 1800.

"Therefore may the unity which is built upon the See of Peter as on a sure foundation stand firm. May it be for all a ***wall and a security, a safe port, and a treasury of countless*** blessings."

- Pope Gregory XVI, Mirari Vos, 1832
https://www.papalencyclicals.net/greg16/g16mirar.htm

" [D]o everything so that the faithful committed especially to your vigilance may reverently and obediently follow Us and the See of Peter. This center of Catholic unity is not only the head of all the churches, but also their mother and teacher; it dispels the darkness of error and is the ***safest port for all who are tossed about.*** "
-Pope Pius IX, Maximae Quidem, 1864.

DIAGRAM OF THE MAGISTERIUM
(with References)

[parkerzurbuch.com]

A year ago I created this diagram, but decided it might be helpful to some if I make it public.

In the link below is a diagram I have created depicting the streams of Divine Revelation. This diagram particularly focuses on the Four (4) Organs of the Magisterium, with primary source references to evidence for the existence of each organ and the mode that each organ can be utilized in.

I hope to complete a more detailed blog post on this topic, but I hope the diagram helps in the meantime.

CATHOLICS NEED TO STOP "NAME CALLING"

I have seen numerous troubling posts over the last few weeks, including those Catholics referring to their other fellows in religion by utilizing the following fallacies or persuasive techniques. These occur on both "sides" of the current inter-Catholic debates:

1. Ad hominem (fallacious) arguments. These are least common and most apparent when they occur. They are self-explanatory.

2. Persuasive techniques in where persons are shamed for sharing arguments from certain individuals or groups. This is quite common. It seems to be almost an "ad hominem," by extension. Should persons be "shamed" for putting forth certain valid (although *maybe* not sound) agruments from Catholic social media personalities?

I am attempting here to exhort my fellow Catholoc interlocutors to focus the necessary criticism on the arguments -- not on the persons from whom they come.

I found that reading (and re-reading) this article by Dr. John Joy to be quite refreshing; even if I think it is lacking in a key aspect. I have learned a lot from Dr. Joy over the last few years; either by his books, articles, or interviews he has done. I have also greatly benefited from the references he has locked me onto as regards studying more and more about the Magisterium.

So, what is my main contention that this article is “lacking?”:

I wish Dr. Joy would have entertained the conclusion that P. Honorius was a heretic in his private person, but was not a heretic in his papal magisterium (the letter that Honorius wrote, which has been condemned by multiple ecumenical councils, was simply that: a private letter). As the question of Honorius was quite important to Joy's argument, I found it lacking in this way.

Now, I am certainly not saying that this lack is therefore a “death-blow” to his argument. Certainly the evidence he gives regarding Pope Francis is also compelling to many. There are other historical cases that many use to demonstrate papal heresy (even on a magisterial level). Erick Ybarra, for one, has done a great job of highlighting the issues regarding P. Vigilius.

I simply wish that Joy had addressed this argument for the orthodoxy of P. Honorius “qua Pope” (not simply as a private person).

Additionally, it does certainly seem to be the case that if one example can be proven of magisterial, papal error or heresey that the “infallible safety” argument would then fall apart. And I say this as someone who does, in fact, hold to said argument.

https://onepeterfive.com/is-there-a-charism-of-infallible-safety/?utm_source=1P5&utm_campaign=4838859194-1P5_DAILYRSS_EMAIL&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_7ee622bcbb-4838859194-28350759&mc_cid=4838859194&mc_eid=b6b15ff4d1&fbclid=IwAR2JUsOhyziidIjxp-eR51ZymMf7EkEY_N8eXJjXCmjwvRMGoNVuiU7qbQI

The faithful are ultimately preserved from dangerous error not by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the pope.

I compiled some references to Magisterial documents regarding the topic of a Catholic's assent to non-definative (reformable) teachings of the Church's Magisterium.

A topic that I believe is particularly pertinent in our present ecclesiastical situation.

Enjoy! Hoping to do a video explaining this in more detail soon at Catholicism in the Car.

I am hoping to get back into doing some more episodes soon. Hopefully an episode, at least, going over the wonderful CDF document from 1990 "Donum Veritatis."
As regards navigating magisterial teachings and our assent (or dissent) towards them, this document is extremely insightful.

What concerns morality can also be the object of the authentic Magisterium because the Gospel, being the Word of Life, inspires and guides the whole sphere of human behavior. The Magisterium, therefore, has the task of discerning, by means of judgments normative for the consciences of believers, tho...

Note from the Secretariat of State [Pietro Parolin] dated October 23, 2023

To my knowledge, this note was made public on November 24, 2023. At the end of this post is a link to the notes English translation with some additional commentary.

The German bishops are asked, “to respect [the] path of the universal Church and to avoid the impression that parallel initiatives are underway that are indifferent to the endeavor to "journey together".

It goes on to say that, “there is no possibility of arriving at a different assessment” of the following issues:

(a) Priestly ordination reserved to men.

b) Another issue on which a local Church has no possibility of taking a different view concerns homos*xual acts. For even if one recognizes that from a subjective point of view there may be various factors that call us not to judge people, this in no way changes the evaluation of the objective morality of these acts.
The constant teaching of the Church emphasizes that "the objective moral evaluation of s*xual relations between persons of the same s*x is precisely and certainly established. Another question, which is not under discussion here, is the degree of subjective moral imputability of such relationships in each individual case."
