Dudu Foundation Set to Empower 50 Women Farmers in Akwa Ibom

Amid economic hardships that strain many Nigerian households, young people across the country are stepping up to make a difference. One shining example is Edu Offong, whose initiative, the Dudu Foundation, is launching a transformative project to alleviate the economic burdens on women farmers in Akwa Ibom State.

The Dudu Foundation Agricultural Employment Scheme 2024 aims to empower fifty subsistent women farmers with a grant of fifty thousand naira (N50,000) each. This initiative comes at a critical time when the rising cost of living has made it increasingly difficult for many families to make ends meet. By providing this financial support, the Dudu Foundation is not only helping these farmers sustain their agricultural activities but also contributing to the state's overall economic growth.

For many of these women farmers, the grant is more than just financial assistance; it is a lifeline that offers renewed hope and stability in this uncertain times. With these funds, the farmers can purchase essential farming inputs, expand their operations, and improve productivity, ultimately ensuring food security for their families. As economic pressures mount, initiatives like this are crucial in reducing economic hardship and empowering individuals to take control of their future.

Edu Offong’s vision through the Dudu Foundation is clear: to create opportunities for those who need them most. By focusing on women farmers, the foundation recognizes the pivotal role women play in agriculture and aims to strengthen their contributions to the sector. The public call for recommendations to identify deserving beneficiaries ensures that these grants reach those truly in need.

If you know a woman farmer in Akwa Ibom State who could benefit from this grant, the Dudu Foundation is seeking your recommendations. To nominate a deserving farmer, please send the following information directly to the Dudu Foundation’s official page: her name, local government area (LGA) of origin, residential address, and contact phone number. Only direct messages to the foundation’s official page will be considered.

Edu Offong deserves commendation for her dedication to uplifting others. Her efforts through the Dudu Foundation are not just acts of charity but a powerful statement on the importance of service, compassion, and leadership. As we witness the positive changes her initiative brings, we are inspired to pray for her continued success, support her endeavors, and take pride in the remarkable achievements of a young woman making a lasting impact in Akwa Ibom and beyond.

Lauding Senator Aniekan Bassey’s Medical Outreach Initiative

From August 26th to 28th, 2024, the Methodist General Hospital in Ituk Mbang, Uruan, will become a hub of healing and hope as a 3-day free medical/surgical outreach takes place.

The outreach, held in collaboration with the National Productivity Center, Abuja, and Dabis Global Construction Company Ltd, will run daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This partnership underscores the strategic alliances forged by Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey to bring much-needed healthcare services to the grassroots.

The outreach, which will cover free surgical operations, general tests, treatment, and drug dispensation, is a timely intervention that will alleviate the burden of medical expenses for many families in Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District covering: Ibiono Ibom, Itu, Uyo, Uruan, Ibesikpo Asutan, Nsit Ibom, Nsit Atai, Etinan, and Nsit Ubium.

For those grappling with health challenges but constrained by financial limitations, this initiative provides a lifeline, offering access to quality healthcare services that might otherwise be out of reach. Senator Bassey understands that the health of his constituents is paramount to the overall development of the district.

Senator Bassey’s initiative is also a commendable contribution to Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda, particularly in the areas of health and social welfare. The ARISE Agenda, with its focus on ensuring sustainable development across Akwa Ibom State, emphasizes the need for accessible and quality healthcare for all.

By sponsoring this medical outreach, Senator Bassey is not only addressing immediate health needs but also reinforcing the state government's vision of a healthier, more productive populace.

The significance of this free medical outreach extends beyond the immediate medical benefits, highlighting Senator Aniekan Bassey’s proactive approach to governance—one that prioritizes the needs of the people and translates into tangible actions.

His consistent efforts to improve the lives of his constituents, whether through healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, or infrastructure development, have marked him as a leader who is genuinely investing in the future of Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District.

As the people of Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District prepare to benefit from this laudable initiative, it is imperative that we recognize and support the vision and efforts of Senator Aniekan Bassey. His commitment to the health and well-being of his constituents is not just commendable—it is essential for the continued progress and prosperity of the Akwa Ibom people.

Destination Marketing: The South Korean Example and Lessons for Nigeria

The photo in this post is a sponsored ad from Korea, and I am seeing this ad right here in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital. This ad has made me want to visit Korea. This is destination marketing at its peak!

South Korea has emerged as a master of destination marketing, with its tourism campaigns reaching far beyond its borders. The country's strategic use of digital marketing, social media, and cultural exports like K-pop, Korean dramas, and their food has made it a sought-after destination for global travelers.

What makes Korea’s approach particularly effective is its focus on appealing to non-Koreans, enticing them with a curated vision of what the country offers. This stands in contrast to the strategies often employed by other countries, including Nigeria, which tend to focus more inwardly, marketing destinations to locals rather than to a broader, international audience.

South Korea’s destination marketing is a textbook example of a well-coordinated, outward-focused campaign. Sponsored ads, social media campaigns, and partnerships with global influencers are tailored to capture the imagination of potential visitors in far-flung locations.

For instance, it's not uncommon for people in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, or other parts of the world to encounter sponsored ads showcasing Korea’s cities, historical sites, and cultural experiences. These campaigns are carefully crafted to appeal to different demographics, whether it's adventure seekers, history enthusiasts, or those simply curious about Korean pop culture.

One of the key elements of Korea’s strategy is its investment in understanding the desires and expectations of international tourists. By aligning their marketing with what global audiences want to experience, Korea has effectively positioned itself as a must-visit destination for millions worldwide.

Tourism experts like Ubong Ekpe Okon, Joe Francis Umoh, Allen Effeh, and Joseph Utin would agree with me that the marketing strategies employed in our geographical divide often fall into the trap of focusing primarily on local audiences. This approach, while fostering local pride and encouraging domestic tourism, misses out on the broader opportunities available in the global tourism market. For example, many events and attractions in this part of the world are promoted predominantly to locals, rather than targeting tourists from other states or from outside the country.

There’s a valuable lesson for Nigeria in the Korean example. By shifting focus to target potential visitors from outside Nigeria, we could significantly boost our tourism industry. Imagine if the breathtaking views of Ibeno Beach, the lush landscapes, or our cultural festivals were marketed to an international audience. With the right strategy, we could transform into a global destination, drawing in tourists who are eager to experience the unique offerings of our people.

To achieve this, we would need to invest in understanding the preferences of international travelers and tailoring our marketing to meet these expectations. This might involve creating engaging content that highlights the attractions of our destinations, leveraging social media influencers with global reach, and ensuring that marketing materials are accessible to a global audience.

The success of South Korea in marketing its destination to the world serves as an inspiring example for us as a people. By adopting a more outward-focused approach and embracing the tools and strategies used by global leaders in destination marketing, we have the potential to open our doors to the world, turning our country into a tourism hotspot that attracts visitors from all corners of the globe.

Management Contract: AKSG, Icon Group Battle in Court Over 5-Star Hotel

Icon Group Warns AKSG to Maintain Status Quo Ante Until Determination of 3 Pending Lawsuits

Top hospitality outfit Icon Hotels Group has told the Akwa Ibom State Government to maintain the status quo ante on the management of the state’s 5-star hotel until the determination of the three pending suits in different courts in Uyo and Calabar.

In a Caveat Emptor made available to TheMail on Monday, the group stated that it is aware that the state government is currently sourcing a substantive manager for the Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort, formerly Le Meridien Hotel.

There are pending cases in the State High Court, Federal High Court, both in Uyo, and the Court of Appeal in Calabar involving both parties.

The court cases are occasioned by an alleged breach of contract on the part of the AKSG, where the government abruptly ended the management contract it signed with Icon Group.

In the Caveat Emptor issued on behalf of Icon Group by its legal representative, Abu Samson Esq. of Abu Samson & Co, 29B Colorado Street, Ministers Hill, Maitama, Abuja, the hospitality outfit warned that anyone or company who intends to show interest in taking over the management of the Ibom Hotels & Golf Resort in a substantive capacity would be doing so at his/her/their own peril.

“It has come to the notice of our client, Icon Hotels & Resort Nigeria Limited, that despite pending court matters challenging the purported termination of the management contract agreement executed between the Akwa Ibom State Government and our client, the Akwa Ibom State Government is actually sourcing a substantive manager for the said hotel while the suit is pending in court.

“Parties and counsel were duly served all court processes, and parties have also taken steps by exchanging pleadings and are presumed to understand the principles of law that they cannot take further steps in negotiating, appointing, and executing another contract with another substantive manager for the hotel until all matters are dispensed with,” the Caveat Emptor reads.

GOVERNOR ENO APPROVES NEW BUNGALOW FOR COUPLE WHO DONATED LAND FOR NEIGHBOUR’S ARISE COMPASSIONATE HOME

Impressed by the kind gesture of a couple in ONNA Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, who donated a piece of land for the building of an ARISE Compassionate home for a widow, Governor Umo Eno has directed that a two -bedroom ARISE bungalow be equally built for the couple.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Mr Ekerete Udoh, the Governor has directed his aide on humanitarian affairs to immediately start work on erecting a new building for the couple.

The Governor was quoted as saying, “I have just directed that a brand new compassionate home be built for the couple too for their good heart . This is the true definition of the Arise spirit”

Last week, at Ikot Nkan in ONNA Local Government Area, Madam Stella George, had been gifted a house by the Governor who was represented at the presentation ceremony by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Uko Udom, SAN.

But the most astonishing story of the exercise was that a couple had to donate their parcel of land for the widow to have a house built for her by the Governor.

However, shortly after being briefed on the gesture of the couple, Governor Eno on Sunday directed that the couple who showed such kind gesture to their neighbour be immediately rewarded.

The indigent family lived in a thatched house but decided to donate their land for the home to be built for Madam Stella George, prompting the Governor’s representative to describe them as the true ARISE ambassadors.

Mr Udom,SAN, had expressed appreciation for their sacrifice and promised to relate the rare gesture to the State Chief Executive, who in his usual kindness and empathy for the vulnerable, has now directed that a two- bedroom Arise Compassionate home be built for her as well.

Umo Eno’s First Year in Office Has Brought Tremendous Results - Capt. Iniobong Ekong

The Honorable Commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, Captain Iniobong Ekong (Rtd), has lauded the first year of Governor Umo Eno’s administration, highlighting the substantial progress and development achieved in Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, Capt. Ekong praised Governor Eno’s visionary leadership and commitment to transforming the state. “Governor Umo Eno’s one year in office has yielded tremendous results for the people of Akwa Ibom,” Ekong stated. “His administration has focused on infrastructure development, economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life of the people.”

Under Governor Eno’s leadership, several key projects have been initiated and completed, significantly impacting various sectors, especially people in rural communities.

The Commissioner pointed to the rapid development in the housing sector, which has seen the construction of affordable homes and the improvement of urban planning across the state. “We have witnessed remarkable strides in town planning and land management, ensuring sustainable development and orderly expansion of our cities,” Ekong added.

Capt. Ekong also highlighted the administration’s efforts in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. “From the renovation and construction of schools and hospitals to the expansion of our road networks, Governor Eno has demonstrated a passion for service and commitment to the welfare of Akwa Ibomites,” he noted. “These projects are not just about building structures but about building a future for our people.”

The Commissioner expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing that the foundations laid in the past year will pave the way for sustained growth and development. “Governor Umo Eno has set a clear path for the future, and I am confident that his administration will continue to deliver on its promises, bringing prosperity and progress to Akwa Ibom State,” Capt. Ekong added.

The Commissioner, however, used the opportunity to issue a firm warning to individuals encroaching on government lands and properties, emphasizing that their time is up. He stressed that the current administration is prioritizing the protection and utilization of public amenities and will not tolerate any unauthorized occupation of government lands.

“The time is up for those encroaching into government lands and properties,” Capt. Ekong said. “We urge all those involved in these unlawful activities to relocate immediately. This administration is committed to safeguarding its assets and ensuring they are used for the benefit of the public.”

He added that Governor Umo Eno is committed to ensuring that government lands and properties serve the greater good, rather than the interests of a few. “Perpetrators are hereby warned to desist from using government properties unlawfully and to seek proper relocation before the long arm of the law catches up with them.”

The Commissioner reiterated that government would take all necessary legal actions against those who continue to encroach on government lands. He urged affected individuals to comply promptly with the directive to avoid facing severe consequences.

As Governor Eno marks his first year in office, the accolades from various quarters reflect a broad consensus on the positive impact of his governance. The administration’s focus on inclusive development and strategic planning signals a promising future for Akwa Ibom State in the years to come.

I woke up this morning with serious thoughts on the recent bill seeking the return to Nigeria's old national anthem, which has sparked significant debate, especially as it scaled its second reading in the Senate.

At a time when the nation is grappling with numerous challenges, many Nigerians question whether revisiting a 64 year old anthem should be a legislative priority.

Nigeria's first national anthem, "Nigeria, We Hail Thee," was written in 1960. The lyrics were penned by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate who was living in Nigeria at the time, and the music was composed by Frances Berda. This anthem was adopted to mark Nigeria's independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.

The anthem was later replaced in 1978 by the current anthem, "Arise, O Compatriots," which was composed by the Nigerian Police Band under the directorship of Benedict E. Odiase, with lyrics created through a national competition.

The old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” reflected a sense of optimism and unity as the country transitioned to independence. Its lyrics are as follows:

"Nigeria we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood we stand,
Nigerians all are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland."

In 2024, however, these words seem distant from the current realities. Nigeria faces significant socio-economic challenges, political instability, and growing discontent among its citizens. The sentiments of brotherhood and pride mentioned in the old anthem feel overshadowed by widespread hardship and division.

The current anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” was adopted in 1978 and emphasizes unity, service, and patriotism:

"Arise, O compatriots,
Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and faith.
The labor of our heroes past
Shall never be in vain,
To serve with heart and might
One nation bound in freedom, peace, and unity."

Despite its inspiring call to patriotism, many Nigerians feel a growing disconnect between the words in the anthem. The anthem's ideals of freedom, peace, and unity are increasingly seen as aspirational rather than reflective of current conditions. With rising inflation, insecurity, and a sense of disenchantment under the current administration, the anthem’s message feels like a stark contrast to daily realities.

It is concerning that amidst these pressing issues, the Senate is focusing on something as symbolic as an anthem change. The country is facing severe economic hardships, with inflation hitting record highs, unemployment soaring, and basic living costs becoming unbearable for many. Insecurity remains a critical issue, with various regions facing violence and instability. The educational and healthcare systems are also in dire need of reform and investment.

The Tinubu-led government has a substantial responsibility to address these urgent challenges. Policies should be focused on economic recovery, job creation, enhancing security, and improving social services. Efforts should be made to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, who are continuously burdened by the current administration’s policies.

While national symbols like an anthem are important, they should not overshadow the need to address immediate and critical issues affecting the populace. The Senate's energy and resources would be better spent on legislating solutions to improve the quality of life for all Nigerians. The focus should be on tangible actions that bring relief and hope to a struggling nation, rather than revisiting the past through symbolic gestures. It is crucial for the government to realign its priorities towards making life easier and more enjoyable for its citizens, fostering a sense of genuine prace, unity and progress.
