While it may seem that the coffee craze has taken off in the last couple of years, it has been a popular drink since itâs creation in the 15th century; yes, both you and Joan of Arc enjoyed a steaming hot cup of coffee! â
The coffee plant was first discovered in the mountains of Ethiopia. Thereâs an old folk tale that rumors a farmer noticed after his goats ate from the coffee plant they would burst out with energy, leading him to discover the magic of the coffee bean! The people of Ethiopia later used coffee in religious ceremonies to help them stay awake and focused throughout the day of their festivities. Who knew Medieval Ethiopians and modern-day businessmen had so much in common?! ð€
As coffee spread around the world, itâs popularity grew! The first public record of a business selling coffee was in 1475, not too long after coffeeâs discovery, named Kiva Han in the Turkish city of Constantinople. ð§ð®ðžð² ððµð®ð ðŠðð®ð¿ð¯ðð°ðžð! Coffee houses became centers of learning and intellect. Individuals would gather to learn, read, debate, perform, spread news, and most importantly enjoy the company of others. People took coffee very seriously even as early as the 15th century. In fact, in Turkey, it was a law that a woman could divorce her husband if he could not provide the necessary amount of coffee for the family. Imagine those wedding vows! ð ð®ð ð±ð²ð®ððµ ðŒð¿ ð°ðŒð³ð³ð²ð² ð±ðð² ðð ðœð®ð¿ð?
With over 400 billion cups of coffee being consumed each year, it is still extremely popular 546 years later. Todayâs use of coffee isnât really all that different from our ancestors. We still drink our daily cup of joe to get us out of our morning grog and enjoy it while catching up with old friends. Coffee shops are still hubs for creativity, business, and mental growth. Who wouldâve known that a couple of goats with insomnia would lead to one of the most popular beverages of all time?!
