"Planetary Pebble." Northern , 2016. Expedition 01 funded by the National Geographic Society. // A small, coin-sized piece of rests on a velvet cloth in my hand. The stone has pores on its surface like a lunar rock. It weighs about as much as my pet cockatiel back home, thousands of miles away. On its Martian-like surface grow the thing I love the most aside from family... LICHENS (pronounced "Lykins"). This tiny pebble is coated in Iceland's pioneers. These lichens are one of the first lifeforms (as well as moss and certain plants/fungi) to grow on new land from volcanoes. With some species living for hundreds (and even thousands) of years, lichens continue to fascinate me the more I encounter. I have a challenge for you... Go outside, look at some trees, rocks, or even the soil, and find some lichens! Tag a post with and I'll see what you find!
